15.01.2022 Cells are the building blocks of all organisms and our body contains over 3 billion of them. Most cells are very small and can be seen only with a microscope. Cells perform many different functions such as sending nerve impulses and causing movement of muscles. The Year 8 students have been learning about cells and cellular processes. To broaden their understanding of this topic, students had to use their research skills and creativity to construct a cell model. Models were then presented and discussed with their peers. Students were very enthusiastic to work on the cell models and share them with the class. Most of them produced some amazing creations.

14.01.2022 Every Thursday of this term, the students participate in a Soccer Program. The coach is Muzafar Gulistani who plays for Pitbulls FC. The students are involved in practising a variety of soccer skills. They are learning how to control the ball and dribble it through the cones, bounce the ball and kick it twice whilst controlling it the whole time, passing the ball to another player, shooting goals and participating in a game. They have played the spider game and also a norma...l game. It is wonderful to see everyone actively participating at each session and having a lot of fun. Well done to all the girls and boys involved in the program for your enthusiasm, cooperation with one another and determination.

10.01.2022 It is with great sadness that we read of the tragic death of one of our Old Scholars, Alex Giannias. Sadly, Alex was involved in car accident along Anzac Highway on Wednesday evening. Alex began at the College in Reception in 1997. He did all his schooling at St George College before leaving during Year 12 in 2010 to take up an electrical apprenticeship. After completing his apprenticeship and gaining experience over a number of years, Alex began his own successful business. ...The teachers remember Alex as a quiet and considerate young man who made genuine connections with those around him. He was loyal to his friends and respectful to his teachers. We extend Alexs family our love, prayers and blessings as they face this heart-breaking situation.

10.01.2022 We wish all our Year 12’s good luck as they embark on their SACE examinations from tomorrow. All the best for the future.

10.01.2022 As part of their study of Business Innovation, the Year 11 students have been learning about Design Thinking. Design Thinking is about believing you can make a difference, and having an intentional process in order to get to new, relevant solutions that create positive impacts for individuals and communities. Students were asked to work in groups to design chairs for 5 distinct users, including a baby and an astronaut in space. Using the Design Thinking process and empathising with their users, students were able to design innovative and creative chairs with a range of materials.

09.01.2022 Every Wednesday of this term, students have gathered in the library to have a go at playing chess. Students from different year levels participated in this activity, We even had students from Year 5 and 6 playing with and against students from Year 9 and 10. It was fantastic to see some students with prior knowledge of the game help out and instruct others on how the rules work, and this allowed students who have never played before to participate and have fun. Chess is a soc...ial game and it has been a common sight for students to enjoy a conversation and strategise on how they may have played differently. The Chess Club will continue to run until the end of the term and is opened for anyone who is interested. There are many more students joining in, so if chess is new to you or you are a seasoned veteran, you can find someone of the same ability to have a game with.

09.01.2022 Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas!

08.01.2022 Year 8 students have been studying the topic on energy. They have been learning about different forms of energy and its importance for humans. Students were given a project in which they had to design, test and present an energy toy that would change at least one type of energy into another. The level of creativity and effort that was put into their creations and presentations was amazing. They had lots of fun presenting their energy toys to their peers. Some of the creations included balloon race car, marshmallow launching catapult, sling shots and elastic band paddle boat.

07.01.2022 The Year 4 class in Greek lessons this term has been studying Greek Mythology and each student chose to research one of the 12 main gods or goddesses, do a project and present orally to their peers for assessment. Here is a snapshot of the students at work.

07.01.2022 St George College Senior Centre - Week 2 Project Update This week saw concrete being poured throughout the open learning spaces to create a single level through out our Senior Centre!

07.01.2022 This term we had our first junior campus assembly for a while and it was hosted by the Year 3 class where they showcased all the good work they have been doing in class. In HASS the students did Aboriginal Studies and they presented their aboriginal tools poster and a model of the tool they individually made. In science they designed posters on living, non-living and once living things and presented their work to the student audience. A lovely way to end the assembly was with a short performance of the bible story Noah's Ark, which they have been reading in religion. Thank you Year 3s for an entertaining and well presented assembly enjoyed by all.

07.01.2022 The Year 2 class have planted a variety of new herbs in their garden. The students planted rocket, parsley, coriander and thyme. They will be looking after the plants to help them grow. The students have enjoyed learning new skills, spending time in the garden and taking responsibility to care for their plants. Students love watching their herb garden grow. They are very excited to use the herbs to cook and eat a meal later in the year.

07.01.2022 Serbian Assembly On Friday 26 June, the entire College participated in an online assembly where students who took part in Serbian lessons showcased their learning. Items included projects, a play, songs and dance. Mrs Jelena Dinic and the students from Reception to Year 7 demonstrated the incredible effort they put into their classes. Well done to the students and Mrs Dinic for putting in an amazing effort with their lessons and for preparing an incredible assembly!

06.01.2022 The Year 12s have had a difficult start to this year in relation to all the disruptions with COVID 19. There was some concern as to how we were going to complete the required practical component of the Biology course. Thankfully however, students were allowed to return to school and the pressure of completing tasks has been eased. So the first opportunity we had we decided to design and deconstruct a practical on photosynthesis and the limiting factors that effect this proc...ess. Obviously we required plants in order to prove a hypothesis and make accurate observations. Therefore a visit to Bunnings was necessary to acquire materials. It was also a good excuse to get out of the laboratory considering all the COVID 19 restrictions previously preventing us from conducting any field work. The students had to make educated decisions on what plants were ideal for their investigation. This was essential to the success of the experiment, so being around the huge variety of plants at Bunnings allowed them to better question and justify their choices. In their final report, they will now be able to critically and logically make conclusions based on observations made at Bunnings. The students are looking forward to demonstrating their knowledge by conducting successful experiments.

05.01.2022 The students at the Junior Campus have been busy planting a variety of flowers, native plants, herbs and vegetables. The Year 3 class had so much fun planting tomatoes, celery, corn, beans and carrots in their vegetable garden and they will be looking after them to help them grow and produce crop. It is a great hands-on experience that ties in well with our Science topic of living, non-living and once-living things and it also gives students the opportunity to work cooperatively on real-life tasks. Great work Year 3s.. we sure do have some Green Fingers in our class!

04.01.2022 During a recent upgrade to the Year 6 classroom we discovered this work still written on the Blackboard underneath the Whiteboard. So not wanting to leave any work unfinished the current Year 6 class decided to finish the task 22 years after it was set!

04.01.2022 Mrs Taliangis notified the class of a competition hosted by AGSA asking students to create a piece of work inspired by the theme of Home. The successful entries would be a part of the Art Galleries very first online exhibition for South Australian Living Artists Festival, SALA. Mrs Taliangis always encourages us to enter any competitions she is notified of, but this competition was more interesting to me than the others because the theme was quite broad and allowed me to be... creative. When thinking about the theme of home' I was instantly drawn to my time in Greece. As a third generation Greek/Australian, I am blessed to call both countries my home. In 2016 my family travelled there, it was my first time. I met a lot of my family and even though it was the first time meeting them, I instantly felt a connection. I began by going back and looking at all of the photos I took with my family in Greece. I was particularly interested in the ancestral homes of my grandparents. I was drawn to my YIAYIAS home because it was where I felt the most at Home. In this oil painting I have captured the view of the landscape from my grandmothers house. I added the windowsill to bring focus to the landscape and create the illusion of being inside the home. The home that made me feel I belonged. 03.01.2022 Studies have shown that most students learn by doing rather than just reading, watching or hearing. Providing hands on learning to students can have profound effect on their learning particularly in Science. Involving students in a learning experience where they learn by doing enables them to observe everything around them, plan a process and test hypotheses. It increases students motivation and encourages them to think independently. Activities such as laboratory proced...ures support the development of practical skills and shape students understanding of scientific concepts and phenomena. Designing and planning investigations, analysing results and data are closely related to core activities and provide valuable first-hand experiences for students. Middle school students have had the opportunity to participate in many hands on activities this Semester. Some of the laboratory exercises include separating different components of mixtures (year 7), determining pH levels in household substances (year 9) and DNA extractions from fruits (year 10). Other activities such as design and testing energy toys (year 8), modelling natural selection process (year 9) and creating active food webs by using a ball of yarn have all enabled students to enhance their learning experience in Science.

02.01.2022 National Science week is an annual festival of science that takes place in August each year. In schools around Australia teachers and students contribute to National Science Week by organising and participating in a diverse range of activities and events. This event aims to encourage an interest in science and encourage young people to become fascinated by the world we live in. The theme for this year is Deep Blue: innovation for the future of our oceans. At St George Coll...ege students engaged in a range of science activities to celebrate this special week. Stalls with sweets were set up on both campuses for all the students to enjoy. Many students entered colouring in competitions, jolly jar guessing competitions and purchased raffle tickets for their chance to win prizes. The winners will be announced next week. Overall, it was a very fun and engaging science week at our College.

02.01.2022 St. Fanourios is a martyr and miracle worker in the Greek Orthodox religion... He is one of the Saints asked to help find people or things that are lost. His name comes from the Greek word fanerono which means to reveal. The tradition of baking a Fanouropita, the cake that will help you find whoever or whatever that is lost, is a great honour bestowed upon the Saint. It is also made to celebrate his memory every 27th of August. Today, as part of their religion lesson, the Year 2 and Year 3 students came together to make a Fanouropita and learn about this significant day..The beautiful aromas of this cake made our school kitchen smell divine.

02.01.2022 The Greek singing choir has been coming together since week 2 of the current school term. We have been learning the song (Pirame t Aryirokastro) which is all about the 28th of October ( day), the day when General Metaxas rejected an ultimatum given by the Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini, during World War II. We plan to accompany our song with bouzouki and Greek dancing and present it in front of our school audience on the day of the celebration of OXI DAY. Alexandra Kouvoussis Year 5

01.01.2022 The Mid-Year Reception has been an exciting time of learning lots of new skills with the childrens fearless explorations and attempts supported in every experience. Their individual learning and wellbeing needs are catered for through our smaller, supportive classroom environment. They have formed new friendships as the smaller sized class has created a different set of dynamics in their social play and connections. They have explored ways to make new friends as new peers j...oined the class and have investigated how to be a kind friend at school. Each day the children have eagerly participated in activities to learn about numbers, describing and recognising 2D shapes and the sorting of objects, in the form of patterns and groups. They are developing concepts about literacy through language and listening exercises about the alphabet and Jolly Phonics sounds. The children have been writing each day, learning how to hold a pencil correctly and the correct way to form letters in our Handwriting lessons. They have shown pride in following the school routine and classroom expectations. Through their play-based curriculum the students will discover, take risks, build confidence, negotiate, problem solve, create, learn to get along with others and develop self-awareness.

01.01.2022 The Year 9 Students have spent a number of lessons in the laboratory investigating various light properties. Some of the light phenomena that were experimented with include reflection and refraction of the light, formation of rainbows, total internal reflection, shadows and many others. Some of our focus questions were: Why is the sky blue? How do the rainbows form?... Why do objects in water appear to be broken? Why do we see ourselves in the mirror? See more
