25.01.2022 An early morning laugh from Marine Rescue Port Stephens.

25.01.2022 Sensational effort from Rodney, Ken and JD. The excellence of their skills and knowledge led to a fantastic outcome.

24.01.2022 A cruiser moored in Moulting Bay sinking this afternoon. We attempted to contact the owner to no avail. MAST and TasPol have been informed.

24.01.2022 This is a fantastic challenge for all boaters now the off season is upon us.

23.01.2022 Incredible display of engineering excellence from Lyndcraft.

23.01.2022 This is very timely as the winter grips our maritime activities. St Helens Marine Rescue can advise mariners on disposal and or how to deactivate your expired EPIRB.

21.01.2022 Marine Rescue lends a hand with sunken vessel in Georges Bay. The following text was written by Skipper Ron who was assisted by Darren and Geoff. An outstanding mission by our professional volunteers. "In this set of photos, you will see us laying out the Boom on the foreshore (Boom equipment was supplied by BODC and delivered on the back of a truck). Then we put it together (end to end) on the foreshore and then fed it onto the stern of Georges Bay. We then took the Boom ...out to meet the Dinghy that was standing off the sunken vessel. The dinghy was crewed by "Jobie"? and Lee. They took our boom off Georges Bay (shown being fed across with Geoff Barcham handling the boom). We then stood off while the dinghy crew laid the boom. The larger size boom equipment was deployed first and that covered about 270 degrees around the vessel. Jobie and Lee then took the secondary boom gear that we had onboard (also BODC equipment) and as it was in sections, they took it back over to the Slipway and joined the ends together and then came back across to complete the full deployment. This was a very good effort by all authorities, TASPOL, BODC, MAST (Peter Paulsen was in attendance), Jobie and Lee, plus our own VMR crew."

20.01.2022 St Helens can only wish. Modern, contemporary vessel to carry out essential volunteering.

19.01.2022 Terrific escort across the St Helens Bar. Note the southern spit's anger and the beautiful local, converted trawler negotiating the bar channel. The team aboard RV Georges Bay (Darren R, Ron R & John S) were outstanding. Job well done.

19.01.2022 Big day on the water yesterday to tow a vessel from The Middle Ground off Maurouard Beach to Binalong Bay. The vessel with three PoB had suffered gear failure in about 25 metres of water. The success of the operation required outstanding teamwork from our dedicated volunteers. Radio operator Tracey M maintained VHF radio communications. Onshore crew in Christine H and Ken C provided support and maneuvered the tow vehicle form St Helens to Burns Bay and then on to Binalong Bay. Georges Bay crew in JD, Darren A, Geoff B and John S who performed a copy book tow in trying conditions. After securing the vessel on a MAST mooring in Binalong Bay the rescued crew were transferred to the boat ramp and returned to St Helens. A great outcome, well done to all involved.

19.01.2022 News coverage of an incredible rescue. Bravo Marine Rescue Port Stephens.

18.01.2022 Mariners please take note. We are ready to accept your expired flares.

17.01.2022 Late Tuesday afternoon our radio base Watch Officer (Robert who also volunteers as one of our Rescue Vessel Skippers) received a report from a vessel offshore t...hat an upturned kayak or canoe had been signed. The Water Police tasked PS31 to investigate. With the information received and recorded by the radio base, the Skipper of PS31 (Brian) was soon able to locate the Kayak and search the area. The Kayak was taken onboard and returned to the Marine Rescue dock. We understand there is nothing sinister with this finding.

17.01.2022 Timely reminder to all boaters. St Helens Marine Rescue urges all boaters to check their life jackets.

16.01.2022 Flare Collection (Important notice to all mariners): - MAST and Worksafe Tasmania have been advised that the normal practice of pyrotechnic flare disposal through the SLST Volunteer Marine Rescue Units can no longer continue. - MAST, SLST, Worksafe, Tasmanian Police, Tasmanian Fire Service, EPA and the Australian Maritime College are currently looking at ways to address the issue. Once a safe and suitable disposal solution is agreed, a notice will be issued to the boating public. In the meantime, flares must not be disposed of in household rubbish, local landfill sites or public rubbish bins.

16.01.2022 Timely reminder to all boaters, the deadline is a little over a month away.

14.01.2022 A timely warning for our weekend of weather.

13.01.2022 A crew from our magnificent teams responded and gave assisted to MAST in containing the oil. Well done Ron, Geoff and Darren.

12.01.2022 St Helens Marine Rescue to the Rescue after dark Thursday January 30th. Rodney, JD and Ken launched RV Georges Bay at Burns Bay on their way to an emergency at The Gardens in the Bay of Fires. A yacht had lost its mast and had rigging tangled around the prop. At 2125 hours they passed Elephant Rock in 2 - 3 metre seas powered by 30 knot SE winds. At 2200 hours they rendezvoused with the yacht 2 nautical miles north of The Gardens and 1 nautical mile out to sea after requesti...ng those on board to anchor in 40 metre water and set off a flare. The occupants on the yacht abandoned ship via a rubber dinghy where the crew of RV Georges Bay took them on board. Both crew members were cold & wet. Once on board they were stowed in the forward cabin wrapped in woollen blankets. At 2310 hours RV Georges Bay returned to Burns Bay where TasPol took the yacht crew to warm and secure accommodation in St Helens. The crew of RV Georges Bay eventually signed off at 0100 hours and retired home for a well earned rest. See more

11.01.2022 Today in the late afternoon our crew escorted a 20 m Cruiser into St Helens. Conditions were very overcast with persistent rain and thankfully no wind. We transitted the Bar with ease and traversed the Bay at around 15 knots. The vessel is now anchored close by Freycinet's mooring.

11.01.2022 January Activity Marine Rescue Port Stephens is very proud of the work our Radio Base crews perform. The Radio Base is staffed 24 hours a day, every day of the ...year. They have many functions however the major role the crew perform is to keep watch on marine radio frequencies should there be an emergency call from a vessel on the water. Our Radio Crews manage many types of incidents. Their task is to collect accurate information so that the incident can be reported to the appropriate authority - generally the Water Police. These incidents can range from for example reporting a navigation light not working through to a vessel calling a May Day for a life threatening situation. The Water Police who are responsible for all search and rescue work in NSW waters, determine how the incident is to be handled. During the Month of January our radio base managed 37 such Marine Incidents. Our Rescue Vessels were tasked 20 times to assist those requiring help on the water (not all Marine Incidents require a rescue vessel). Interesting that in. January we made 1720 radio calls and 1900 telephone calls to perform our work. Congratulations to our Radio base volunteers - you do an amazing job. See more

11.01.2022 Mariners/boaters take note closure of St Helens Boat Ramp.

10.01.2022 Please note this weekend.

09.01.2022 Your Marine Rescue was busy today. Early this afternoon Radio Operator Veronica received a call from a boat with a failing engine, a short distance off Beer Barrel Beach. The owner was able to set his anchor and contacted SHMR for assistance. Veronica organised a crew, Ken C, Pete G & Darren A. RV Georges Bay was soon on the water and on the way to meet up with the stranded vessel with 2 people on board. After deploying the towing bridle they commenced the tow in relatively... calm conditions. The crew decided it would be better towing them to the St Helens ramp rather than their launch point at Binalong Bay. St Helens Marine Rescue provided fastest and safest retrieval point given the benign conditions on the bar way. The successful operation took 2 hours. Another perfect example of our volunteering supporting Mariners in North East Tasmania. Outstanding work by Veronica, Ken, Pete and Darren.

09.01.2022 Corona Virus (COVID-19) Due to the unprecedented Corona Virus emergency our facilities are closed This notice applies to all visitors and the public... 06.01.2022 Part of our brief is to undertake training. Well four members ventured on to our open waters off the Bay of Fires for a training run in search of an anchor. Most favourably lead by our intrepid leader of training. Ah but who could that be? By the way, we did relocate the anchor in 40 metre off The Gardens.
