22.01.2022 Do you know what to do if you or someone around you were bitten by a snake? As we get into the warmer weather, it is important to be aware and informed of what to do in the case of a snake bite. With about 100 species of snakes in Australia and about 20 of which being highly dangerous to humans, all snake bites must be treated as potentially lethal and medical aid should always be sought urgently. Depending on the type of snake, signs are not always visible and symptoms ma...y not appear for an hour or more after the casualty has been bitten. Symptoms of a snake bite vary but can include immediate or delayed pain at the bite site, puncture marks or scratches usually on a limb, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, headache, abdominal pain, double or blurred vision, bleeding from the bite site, faintness, pain or tightness in the throat, chest or abdomen, and respiratory weakness or arrest. The spread of snake venom depends on the absorption through the lymphatic system. Remaining still and applying a very firm immobilisation bandage and splint is a person’s best chance of surviving a toxic bite. How to respond if you suspect someone has been bitten by a snake Always follow DRSABCD: Danger Response Send for help Airway Breathing CPR Defibrillation 1. Call triple zero (000) for an ambulance. 2. Lie the casualty down and ask them to keep still. Reassure the casualty. 3. If on a limb, apply an elasticated roller bandage (10-15 cm wide) over the bite site as soon as possible. 4. Apply a further elasticised roller bandage (10-15 cm wide), starting just above the fingers or toes and moving upwards on the bitten limb as far as can be reached. Use clothing or other material if an elasticised roller bandage is not available. Apply the bandage as firmly as possible to the limb. You should be unable to easily slide a finger between the bandage and the skin. 5. Immobilise the bandaged limb using splints. 6. Keep the casualty lying down and completely still. 7. Write down the time of the bite and when the bandage was applied. If possible, mark the location of the bite site (if known). Do not wash venom off the skin or clothes because it may assist identification. 8. Stay with the casualty until medical aid arrives.

21.01.2022 Here at St John SA, we are proud to have donated our first aid training services to the students of Hansen Yuncken's SAASTA (South Australian Aboriginal Secondary Training Academy) Certificate II in Construction as part of the Indigenous Students Program. This is a wonderful opportunity for students entering the workplace to understand the importance of first aid training and gain lifesaving skills. St John SA is pleased to be providing these valuable experiences and opportunities to empower South Australian communities.
21.01.2022 Take a look at our incredible Campbelltown Adult Division volunteers as they prepare for their duties in 2021! Prior to any events and challenges that this year may bring, our volunteers complete a full operational setup and pack down of equipment to familiarise and allow for a seamless process in real-life circumstances. An amazing effort from all!
20.01.2022 You may recognise this familiar face on our page - Bec has been volunteering with St John for 21 years! Today we will share a bit more about what motivated Bec to join St John and what some of her most memorable moments have been with the organisation. Bec has always been interested in health and ambulance work (she is a paramedic in fact!) and that is what prompted her to begin volunteering while still in school so she could gain practical experience in the field.... Some of Bec's most memorable moments with St John include: Competing in cadet competitions both locally and interstate Helping with the Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria Assisting with a technical rescue during a mountain biking event and treating an injured cyclist half way down a cliff Working with Bicycle Response Teams in South Australia, Victoria and Northern Territory Experiencing being a patient after collapsing at the finish line of the Melbourne Marathon and receiving an amazing, caring response from her volunteer peers who looked after her until she was stable Thank you Bec for sharing more of your St John volunteer story with us - you certainly have made some amazing memories with St John! If you would like to join our fantastic team of volunteers like Bec, visit our website to find out more about the various opportunities available with St John: https://www.stjohnsa.com.au/get-involved
20.01.2022 Have a read below about one of our lovely volunteers, Delenn from the Port Adelaide Cadet Division! Delenn has been with St John for almost 14 years where she thrives from her passion for helping people. This has driven her motivation to become a first aid trainer for St John. Her favourite aspect of volunteering is working with the cadets, going out to events, helping the attendees, seeing the smiles on their faces when they help and overall just spreading knowledge of fir...st aid and being a huge part of such a wonderful community. St John is a huge loving family who will always have your back. I find every single duty, training night or out of uniform action I complete is memorable. I have been so blessed to be a part of this family and I'm looking forward to many more exciting adventures with the team. Thank you for your kind words Delenn and for sharing your story with us!

16.01.2022 8 days, 24/7 coverage and over 130 clinical patients - it’s safe to say the Army Cadet Camp kept our volunteers busy! Last week our team of event responders, event medics, registered nurses and registered paramedics looked after the medical safety of the Australian Defence Force Cadets at their remote field exercise. While St John SA’s Event Health Services teams usually cover traditional events such as concerts, music festivals, AFL, and motorsports, we also provide quality... clinical care to a variety of other special occasions. Thank you to our team of volunteers for your wonderful work last week! Well done to all involved and we continue to have everyone's health and safety as our first priority
16.01.2022 Take a look at the behind the scenes of a St John volunteer training day! Our volunteers have been busy as they underwent an Adelaide Oval training day to upskill their capabilities to be prepared for any emergency situation. Adelaide Oval as we know it is the heart of many major events that occur here in Adelaide, which makes it an important venue to familiarise our volunteers with. St John volunteers were put through a series of scenarios of first aid processes that inclu...ded retrieval of patients from high and low areas (grandstands and at ground level) with the aid of a stair chair, as well as extracting a patient off of the floor and onto a stretcher who may be unable to self-ambulate. We thank our volunteers for their efforts to help keep spectators and the community safe!

14.01.2022 Say hello to one of our lovely St John Ambulance volunteers, Chloe! Chloe has been a volunteer with St John SA for 12 months, with her first ever shift being at the 2019 Schoolies event. Her first shift became her most memorable as she was impressed with how coherently all services worked together to ensure a successful, safe event. She quickly realised through her Schoolies volunteering experience that she was where she was meant to be and was undertaking the right career... path. Her motivation to become a St John volunteer was because of her desire to gain some practical clinical experience before undertaking her Bachelor of Paramedicine. Some of Chloe's favourite parts of volunteering with St John have been meeting a variety of people within the community at events, being involved as part of an active team of like-minded individuals and giving back to the community. Thank you for sharing your St John volunteering story with us, Chloe!

10.01.2022 Today we are introducing you to Ian, a St John volunteer from our Gawler division. Ian’s volunteering story began when his friend was electrocuted at school and he was unsure of how to assist in this time of emergency. He watched on as teachers performed CPR and saved her life. Ian first started his St John experience as a cadet in the Broken Hill Cadet Division. More recently, he became the Superintendent of the Broken Hill Adult Division. ... He is dedicated to cadets and firmly believes that cadets are the future of St John. As Ian grew up he developed a real passion for wanting to help others and at the age of 18 he joined the State Emergency Service and served 13 years in the Road Crash Rescue team - a role of which he has recently returned to. In May 2020, Ian became a member of St John Ambulance SA and in October 2020 was appointed as a Peer Support Officer. Although he resides in Broken Hill, NSW, he is proudly attached to the Gawler Division here in Adelaide and regularly comes over to help out in events, training and other areas. Thank you for sharing your St John story with us Ian!
