24.01.2022 Body and the Beat ~ 2020 Concert Performances Year 6 ~ Mr Blue Sky With restrictions on singing, chanting and rules around social distancing, we have had to approach our 2020 end of year concert very differently. So, this year our end of year performance is called Body and the Beat - a body percussion bonanza!... Electric Light Orchestra’s song Mr Blue Sky is one of the most downloaded and streamed songs of the 1970’s. This epic tune was written by ELO bandleader Jeff Lynne. It has a sunny, uplifting and catchy vibe which is why it is frequently voted in the top ten of the happiest songs of all time. Here is Year 6 with their body percussion version of Mr Blue Sky!

24.01.2022 Yesterday our Year 5 students participated in a leadership day led by the school principal, Mrs Davies. Throughout the day the students explored the qualities needed by leaders based on examples from Jesus’ life. Challenges to leadership were also explored, e.g. peer pressure. The nine students in the photo were identified by their peers as already showing excellent leadership qualities. They will now go on to present speeches to the children in Years 2 5 who will vote for a final four to become our school captains in 2021. Congratulations to these nine children on being nominated by your peers.

21.01.2022 Year 5 Merit Awards from yesterday. Good work everyone!

21.01.2022 As our year draws to an end, there is no better way to remind us of the reason we celebrate this season... the birth of Jesus, than to have Kindergarten share with us the Nativity of Jesus in our final Advent Liturgy. We wish you all a happy and holy Christmas.

21.01.2022 Today some Year 2 students received a Merit Award for their great work. Well done to the award recipients!

21.01.2022 Years 5 and 6 enjoyed an interschool touch football day last Friday with other Central Coast Catholic Schools. It was so nice to be able to play after the COVID lock down.

20.01.2022 Today we celebrated Catholic Mission Week. This year students had the opportunity to learn about Dara, a young boy who lives at the Arrupe Centre, a Church-run program in the northwest of Cambodia that supports children with disabilities. We gathered, as a community, to pray for Dara and those in need of our love and support.

20.01.2022 Our school gives all children the opportunity to participate in mindfulness, facilitated by Mrs O'Leary, where they practise breathing techniques to help with "letting go" of their frustrations and worries. A simple technique where we hold our hands clenched as we breathe in and then as we breathe out we imagine it is like a balloon loosing all the air as we relax our hands. In the older grades we have applied this same technique to help with learning difficult concepts; as we breathe out it is opening up the pathways in our brain for learning. Mindfulness teaches the children how to remain calm in stressful or challenging situations and the importance of using our breath to increase the flow of oxygen in our body, enhancing peaceful feelings in mind and body.

20.01.2022 Due to COVID restrictions, sporting gala days have been unable to go ahead for the large majority of this year so Year 6 decided to hold a Netball Mini Gala Day on Wednesday in the glorious spring sunshine. The students all participated in the right spirit, showing off the skills they had been practising in PE this term. Most importantly, everyone had a lot of fun and enjoyed an ice block after the games. Special mention to our Year 5 umpires Emily and Ebony who gave up their time for our games to go ahead. They definitely did a better job than what Mr Lewis would have! Thanks girls!

16.01.2022 Body and the Beat ~ 2020 Concert Performances Year 4 ~ Beautiful Creatures With restrictions on singing, chanting and rules around social distancing, we have had to approach our 2020 end of year concert very differently. So, this year our end of year performance is called Body and the Beat - a body percussion bonanza!... Beautiful Creatures is a song from the movie Rio 2. It celebrates themes of diversity and harmony. It is performed by the Brazilian group Baratuques, a percussion and vocal group. They also performed the song at the closing ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Portuguese, English and French. Here is Year 4 with their body percussion version of Beautiful Creatures!

So, this year our end of year performance is called Body and the Beat - a body percussion bonanza!... The Skeleton Dance was the first of the award-winning Silly Symphonies cartoons directed by Walt Disney 90 years ago. Walt Disney described it as the whimsical cartoon of spook-tacular skeletons dancing and rattling along throughout the night. Here is Year 1 with their body percussion version of the Skeleton Dance!

10.01.2022 Last Friday Year 6 held our annual school Mini Fete for all students in the school. It looked a little different to previous years, with lots of hand-washing and sanitising going on, however some things didn't change like the fun activities, lollies and good times! Watch the video to see some of the action (with some commentary from Mr. Perry).

10.01.2022 Our Year 3 Merit Awards and some Principal Awards for students absent last Friday. Congratulations to the award recipients on their fantastic achievements!

09.01.2022 Well done to these super readers for reaching 300 nights of reading this year. What an amazing effort!

08.01.2022 Body and the Beat ~ 2020 Concert Performances Kindergarten ~ The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy With restrictions on singing, chanting and rules around social distancing, we have had to approach our 2020 end of year concert very differently. So, this year our end of year performance is called Body and the Beat - a body percussion bonanza!... The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is music written by the Russian composer Tchaikovsky, for the ballet The Nutcracker. Nutcracker figurines often resemble toy soldiers and are symbols of good luck. The Nutcracker tells the story of a little girl who, in her dreams, goes to the Land of Sweets on Christmas Eve. Here is Kindergarten with their body percussion version of the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

08.01.2022 Body and the Beat ~ 2020 Concert Performances Year 5 ~ In the Hall of the Mountain King With restrictions on singing, chanting and rules around social distancing, we have had to approach our 2020 end of year concert very differently. So, this year our end of year performance is called Body and the Beat - a body percussion bonanza!... In the Hall of the Mountain King was first written by Norwegian composer Edvard Greig as music for the play Peer Gynt in 1876. It is a musical portrayal of Peer Gynt being chased by trolls during his escape from the home of the Mountain King. This music has been widely used in film, tv and video games. In fact Year 5 sang and danced to this piece for our 2016 school musical Aladdin Trouble. Here is their body percussion version of this timeless piece of music.

08.01.2022 Book Week Character Day. Our theme this year was "Curious Creatures, Wild Minds"

07.01.2022 At SJB, the students experienced the historical significance of the 28th October 1940 (OXI Day) in Modern Greek History. With Modern Greek being introduced at SJB, as the school’s language of focus, the students were offered yesterday the unique opportunity to explore the meaning of culture through a public cultural practice associated with Greek-speaking communities and make comparisons with their own celebrations on ANZAC Day and Australia Day - versus Greek OXI Day on the 28th October. Here is a sample of the event presentation by the school captains, followed by a photo of a student’s veteran ancestor awarded by the Greek Minister of Defence in 1985 for his service in the Greek-Italian War during WW2 (photo posted in the comments section below).

07.01.2022 Our Year 3 Merit Award recipients and a lot more reading awards from yesterday. Well done everyone!

06.01.2022 Body and the Beat ~ 2020 Concert Performances Year 3 ~ Little Drummer Boy With restrictions on singing, chanting and rules around social distancing, we have had to approach our 2020 end of year concert very differently. So, this year our end of year performance is called Body and the Beat - a body percussion bonanza!... Little Drummer Boy is a Christmas carol about the birth of Jesus and the gifts presented to the newborn king on this momentous day. The song was originally titled "Carol of the Drums" because of the repeating line "pa rum pum pum pum," which imitates the sound of a drum. It is believed to have been written by Katherine K. Davis in 1941 based on an old Czech carol. There have been hundreds of recorded versions of the song. Year 3’s body percussion is set to a modern, African version of Little Drummer Boy by Alex Boye featuring the Genesis Choir. Enjoy!

06.01.2022 Body and the Beat ~ 2020 Concert Performances Year 2 ~ The Galop Infernal With restrictions on singing, chanting and rules around social distancing, we have had to approach our 2020 end of year concert very differently. So, this year our end of year performance is called Body and the Beat - a body percussion bonanza!... The Galop Infernal is the one of the most famous pieces of music but most people don’t recognise its name. It was written by the German born French composer Offenbach for the final act of one of his operas. This iconic example of high energy can can music has been used in TV and film throughout the years. Here is Year 2 with their body percussion version of the Galop Infernal- more commonly known as the Can Can!
