24.01.2022 Are you looking for a feathered friend? We have some Ross 308 Chickens available for live sale. They are not able to bred from and only suitable as pets (or to eat). They are very friendly and can be picked up etc so would make awesome pets. The girls are starting to lay eggs (infertile). We have 11 that we need to clear by the end of the school year. We also have a male Muscovy duck and a male turkey (non-hostile). All are available for a donation to the school fa...rm enterprise program. Enquiries can be made at the school Admin office 0363723900. UPDATE: Ross 308s are a meat breed, therefore we are uncertain of their success as reliable layers.

23.01.2022 Congratulations to the students who represented our school last Thursday and Friday in the Country Gold Football, Netball and Soccer Carnivals, held in Launceston. Participation in this event required a substantial commitment to after school training during the winter months. We want to see your photos! Please message us or email your photos to [email protected]

23.01.2022 For many years, it has been a privilege to have the St Marys Salvation Army visit SMDS, including the Fingal campus, bringing with them beautiful, brand new hand-knitted jumpers, beanies, scarves, blankets and often other gifts, to encourage the Valley children through the cold of winter. The Salvos team always comment on the joy they receive by experiencing the excitement from the primary students. However, this year, with the onset of Covid-19, the Salvos have not bee...n able to enjoy that direct interaction with the children, instead enlisting our SMDS Chaplain and Social Worker to deliver the donated knitted creations on the Salvos' behalf, keeping on with the bless-up tradition. Our Primary and High School children gratefully received these warming winter gifts over the coldest part of the winter. We would like to thank Envoy Mel and her knitting volunteers. These kind people knit year-round, not only providing their time and energy, but also the wool and materials for the beautifully finished products. Thank you for your generosity! #smdsbless_up

22.01.2022 Don't be like Splat the Cat and worry about your late library books! A lot of library books were borrowed to support home learning during terms 1 and 2. We are happy to say that students can now return these books. Please have a look at home and return any school library books or home readers to the tubs in your classroom. These will be sanitized and put back into the library, ready for someone else to enjoy. Splat the Cat, copyright Rob Scotton. When Splat discovers that he has an overdue library book, he fears that he will be locked up in jail! He does whatever he can to avoid the library. But when he has to go there with his family, he is in for a happy surprise.

22.01.2022 Who could refuse smiling at our #SMDSkinder students enjoying their music lesson today in the music room? In learning their music notes they are also learning their letter sounds, note place on the keyboard and displaying some excellent cutting out skills.

22.01.2022 Please enjoy these photos of some of our Country Gold Carnival Representatives. We have had a wonderful response to our request for photos to share. Please remember to be mindful of images of children other than SMDS students being included in the photo. We have received some great team photos however are unable to share them as we are uncertain about photo permissions of students from other schools. Message us or email your photos to [email protected]

21.01.2022 Thank you to our families who have been into school over the last few days to collect their books and complete the Validation process. It has been great to catch up with everyone. If you missed our book days, are still away on holidays, or working commitments have prevented you from visiting, please call in to our main Administration Office over the next few days and collect your books. Our office will be closed on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 January, but is open from 8.15 - 3.45 on all other days, so there is still plenty of time to collect your books.

21.01.2022 Hats have been added to our wardrobe! Our School Association have purchased every student a hat to support sun safety this summer (SunSmart). Students have been receiving their hats over the course of this week. Bucket hats have our school logo and are navy on one side and reversible to house colour on the other. Our high school students also have the option of Truckers Caps in school colours, however at this stage the colourful bucket hats are proving to be the most pop...ular. We are encouraging students to leave their caps at school to ensure that they always have one available when they go to enjoy the outdoors. #SMDSsunsmart. The major fundraising arm for our School Association is the St Marys Op Shop. We would like to thank the hard working Op Shop Volunteers and the wider community, who make donations and shop at the op shop for their support.

18.01.2022 Only two more sleeps until we see everyone back at school on WEDNESDAY 3rd FEBRUARY 2021!! Please note that Covid-19 practices remain in place: Physical Distancing, Stop Drop and Go, Collect and Go etc. For those students who may be experiencing first day jitters, parents are welcome to park in the bottom car park, walk up the main driveway and through the yellow boom gate (please do not use the gym stairs) and to your child's classroom door. If your child needs your suppo...rt to go into their classroom and settle in, please ensure that no more than 5 adults are in the classroom at any one time. This may mean that drop-off takes a little longer on the first day, but it will also ensure everyone settles into class in a Covid safe way. Stop Drop and Go will commence on Thursday. At the end of the day, early childhood students will be taken to their bus, or taken to the bottom car park by our staff to meet their parents. If you haven't collected your stationery packs yet, they can be collected from our administration office tomorrow.

07.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY: One of our Year 11 students has been viewing our archival Journals as part of an independent study unit on the history of the school. We were surprised to discover Journal entries over the course of 1911 - 1912 which spoke of a Diphtheria outbreak in the area, causing a number of deaths in the community, which sadly included some students. Attendance at the school was very low with families keeping their children home out of fear of the disease. On ...July 3rd 1911 it is written " School reopened after vacation but owing to the prevalence of sore throats and Diphtheria, only three students were present". July 28th 1911: "The average (attendance) for the month was only 14.77 owing to the prevalence of Diphtheria. 62 Cases being reported by the local Health Officer. Feb 1st 1912: Four fresh cases of Diphtheria reported and sent to the hospital. Parents are still afraid to send their children to school. What a remarkable discovery that offers some parallels to the experience of students during the Diphtheria outbreak in 1911 and 1912 and our students experiencing the current pandemic.
