25.01.2022 Next Monday, our new canteen launches into action with Healthy Kids Cucina. Yesterday, we were blessed with a tasting day, generously supplied and served by the beautiful team. 24.01.2022 Our garden of gratitude is growing! Although times are difficult for many, in the words of St Mary Mackillop(whose feast day we celebrate tomorrow, 8th August) " we have much for which to be grateful" Its not too late to send in your familys flower with some of the things for which you are grateful to help us grow our gratitude garden!! You could also post a comment for something you are grateful for and share the love with our whole St Mels Family.

22.01.2022 Stage 2 have had a fruitful start to Term 3 as they begin to explore living things. They made grass heads, did some gardening, built worm farms and analysed the waste in our school. Check it out!

21.01.2022 Kinder have been learning to ask questions about colours in French!

21.01.2022 Today we launched our new colour house names, colours and symbols. They have a great connection to St Mary of the Cross MacKillops history and mission. St Mels was founded in the Josephite charism by our first Australian saint. So too were the schools in Wee Waa, Mungindi, Uralla and Bingara in northern NSW. This is why we have chosen these names to represent our teams. Congratulations to our 2020 house captains who were able to launch the team names and begin a new tradition at our school. We hope our captains and their teams will be blessed with Mary MacKillops strength, courage, resilience and faith in all that they do.

21.01.2022 Mary Undoer of Knots (also Untier of Knots) is a title of Mary derived from a 1700 painting by Johann Schmittdner. The devotion to Mary, Undoer of Knots has become more popular ever since Pope Francis encouraged the devotion in Argentina, and then spoke about it during his first year as pontiff. September 28 is listed as a day to commemorate her under this title. Ribbons were sent home inviting parents and children to record some "knot"/problem or intention and then the r...ibbons were brought back to school and tied around the fence near our garden. Each morning we pray for these intentions and then next term during October - The month dedicated to the Rosary- we will pray a decade while sitting in the garden before school and asking Mary to untie the knots in our lives. Mother of fair love, I look to you. Take into your hands the ribbon of my life, and see the snarl of knots that keeps me bound to sin, anxiety, and hopelessness. I beg you, Mother, by your powerful intercession and long fingers of love and grace, undo the knots in my heart and in my life. Free me to love as Christ loves. Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for us.

20.01.2022 The children in Kindergarten have been learning to recognise and name different emotions.

20.01.2022 Our amazing Family Educator, Mrs Hill, worked with the very caring and supportive students in 1B this week to create messages of encouragement for the Year 12 students preparing for the HCS at Holy Spirit Lakemba. The whole St Mels community is behind you all the way Year 12! When you go through deep waters I will be with you. Isaiah 43:2

17.01.2022 Stage 1 have been reading The 13-Storey Treehouse (by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton) and creating models of each of the rooms they read about. The Year 1 students have shared some amazing descriptions and images of their rooms. Theres a Pillow Room, Shark Tank, Bowling Alley and a Dinosaur Petting Zoo! Such a talented bunch of budding authors!! We are very proud of your work Year 1!!

17.01.2022 Yr 4 love participating in Creative Arts and PE lessons each week! During Sport, children participated in a range of activities with a focus on coordination skills. Look at the determination on their faces! In their Creative Arts class, children have just started to do continuous line drawings where they create an artwork using one continuous line. They then used oil pastels to colour it in. Their artworks look amazing already.

15.01.2022 Some Stage 3 boys have stepped up as leaders this term to coach a group of Year 3 students. Every week our Stage 3 coaches will run a training session with Year 3 to teach the different drills and skills needed to play football. This week was their very first training session and all who participated were very excited and are looking forward to their next session. We hope that the parks open up soon so that our Year 3 team can compete in the Footy Gala Day to show off all the new skills they have learnt! We are very proud of our Stage 3 leaders. Keep up the great work boys!

11.01.2022 In Term 1 the Year 2 students learnt a sing called Id like to teach the world to sing. They were unable to present it at school prayer as we had to wind things down at that time. They are very excited to share this with you now via video. We hope you enjoy it!

This video explains the activity and the flyer has some links to things to do. Your familys involvement in this activity will be very much appreciated by those less fortunate than ourselves. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxZKU6pDZOY&feature=emb_logo

Students participated in a variety of activities which helped them to identify their spiritual gifts and how these gifts, inspired by their chosen Saint, will help them to inspire others in our school community. This culminated in a beautiful, reverent and intimate ceremony with their closest family and sponsor.

07.01.2022 October is a month dedicated to the Rosary. The Rosary is a special set of prayers directed to our Heavenly Mother. When we pray to Mary she takes our prayers to Jesus who loved His Mother very much and will always listen to her. The stage 1 children and the children who attended playgroup all made a decade of the rosary today that they will then use on Monday 19th October when children all around the world will join together to pray the rosary for peace in our world.

07.01.2022 This week some of our Year 4 students were sent a special email message and certificate for their fundraising efforts from the end of last year. As part of their Organic Learning prototype at the end of last year, this group of students organised a fundraising event at school in order to raise money for the Australian farming families who endured many struggles, as a result of drought. The money raised was then sent to a charity called Drought Angels, whose mission is to provide personalised support to farming families in need. The students were so excited to hear that their efforts had made such an impact. Congratulations to these fabulous children and their dedicated teachers!

05.01.2022 Today is the feast day of St Joachim and St Anne, the grandparents of Jesus. We share this prayer and love for all our St Mels grandparents and thank them for all that they have done for each of us.

03.01.2022 With many in our community affected by cancer, our staff, parents and parishioners support the Cancer Councils Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser every year. Due to Covid-19 we couldnt do that in the same way this year. Instead, we had the St Mels BIGGEST Afternoon Tea with staff supplying all the snacks and children eagerly contributing by buying and eating the snacks! We had so many snacks donated, we had to stretch this over two afternoon teas. In total we raised $525.... Huge thanks to all our beautiful staff who donated so generously and served at the canteen. Well done to all our families for supporting this event and to our wonderful snack loving children who had fun for a great cause.

01.01.2022 In Science, Stage 3 started a new unit called Be a Freethinker and Tinker. This unit is about the effects of different forces and how the properties of materials determine their use for a range of purposes. Students are currently in the Explore phase in the Organic Learning Process and have been tinkering with different materials to create a Rube Goldberg machine. Stage 3 also created a catapult and explored the nature of forces through analysing how adjustments can be made to the catapult, in order for it to propel an object the furthest distance possible. The students are excited to continue exploring this unit further through different scientific investigations that enhance their ability to become creative risk takers.
