25.01.2022 People always say to me "I dont know how you do it! So many children, lots of different behaviors and learning" and the answer is simple...because it's my passion and I absolutely love what I do! I know this is the same for my team because I see it everyday. The love, dedication, caring, creative (too name a few) ways in which they all are each day is an inspiration to myself and to each other. Be proud of the educators you are as you each bring something very important and ...different to each child's day. The love from the children is evident in the learning they show, the growth and the love they and their families have! Today is a special day to ensure we reflect on all of the amazing and appreciated work that you do, have done and will continue to do. Today, and everyday I am proud to be an early childhood educator and am proud to be apart of the Story House Black Rock family. See more

24.01.2022 Learning new skills and furthering interests is easy to do when its fun! Our nursery children are enjoying the sunshine and showing off their jumping along with counting, balancing and working with each other. The sun is out and the fun and scene of pride is evident on these beautiful faces!

23.01.2022 Truck driving is a serious business and when you have so much work to do in the garden, there is no time to stop and chat! There is sand to be moved, tan bark to be used for building and much more...the list is endless Watching children demonstrating comfort and ease in their environment is something special and something that we foster, nurture and encourage to grow throughout their time with us at Black Rock

23.01.2022 Slowing down and appreciating the time to be involved in play together is so very important. Extending with repetition of an idea that gave a great sense joy and connection. Happy learning everyone and don't forget to have some fun along the way

22.01.2022 This week we look to place the spotlight on National Child Protection Week, with the theme. "Putting children first". NAPCAN - Play Your Part invite all Australians to look at how they can prioritise children in their lives and communities and to engage in National Child Protection Week as individuals, and as part of families, organisations, communities and society. Putting children first means prioritising the safety and wellbeing of children. To grow up well children need to feel safe and loved, have a chance to play and explore, have a say in decisions that affect them, and access to essential things like food, shelter and healthcare. #childrights #childprotection

22.01.2022 All kinds of shapes.... After a zoom session with Black Rock Primary School, some of the children were still showing interest in discussion of one of the topics, shapes! Our kinder teacher then added this particular interest to the project of school readiness and continued the focus of letters and numbers being made of all kinds of shapes and sizes! Thanks so much Black Rock Primary School

21.01.2022 Happy Early Childhood Educators Day!!! Today is the day that Australia recognises the amazing work you all do in supporting the children and families who access early education. Enjoy your celebrations with your team and please know that we think you are all amazing! You are the face of Story House and reason why our families come to each of our services. Have an amazing day!!

20.01.2022 With Dinosaurs remaining a strong consistent interest , children in our toddler room pursued with intrinsic notion and savoured in bringing their current favourite ones to life! Drawing on recollection and knowledge of them , they exchanged a vast and broad amount of information with their educators. Able to answer open ended questions from colour choices to size, shapes and sounds and a matter of fact...."because today he likes blue." There was a lot of detail being project...ed and a lot of energy as the children alternated between pots, brushes and adjusting grips to act on stroke style. Observing the children intently focused on their task and forming a proud conclusion after self reflection and inspection, is a perfect end to the creative experience.

19.01.2022 Happy Fathers Day to all the wonderful fathers in our communities. You are appreciated and loved more than you know. We hope you all have a great day.

19.01.2022 Black Rock Celebrates Science Week With Great Reactions Did you know that children begin to develop cause-and-effect thinking skills as early as eight months of age? The children at Black Rock took the opportunity to experiment with the concept of cause-and-effect. http://ow.ly/TLwj50BnB3r

19.01.2022 I am a little seed... This week the kinder children are learning about growing plants and how that works into our sustainable program and practice. When we were planting some carrot seeds in the garden, weve found the longest worm that we have ever seen! This added another learning experience when we discussed what worms and other animals do for our environments. During the group time, we shared how a small seed can grow into a plant, flower, fruit or vegetable: from seed to sprout to plant!

17.01.2022 This open invitation was set up as an environment for emphasising on building of diverse ideas. For imaginations to flourish, be joyful equitably regardless of the ways chosen to be expressed, and pictures from this mornings play speaks for itself. What a wonderful morning it was.....

16.01.2022 What is UV? UV rate was the topic of the day and the kinder children talked about why we need to put sunscreen and hats on when its sunny and what is the UV rate that Jessica talks about all the times. Story House policy is that children must wear a hat and sunscreen when the UV rate is over 3 and must stay inside if its over 8. Todays rate was 5 which we all agreed that it is safe for us to play outside with our hat and after putting some sunscreen on.... What does sunscreen do to our skin? We did a small experiment of what it does to our skin. On a black paper, weve printed our hand print of one hand with sunscreen and one without. After a few hours of leaving it on the sun, weve noticed that the colour of the black paper has faded because of the sun but where we put the sunscreen stayed the same as it was protected by sunscreen like its on our skin. Now we know that sunscreen is not just a routine, but an important process to protect our skin!

15.01.2022 The secret is out! The child at SHEL Black Rock have been secretly planting some lettuce seeds for our dads and special friends as, you LETTUCE (let-us) grow strong and brave! For last three weeks, we have been watering and looking after the lettuce and finally we moved in into a pot today.... It is planted in a disposable pot to make for simple planting by either leaving it in the garden or plant the whole pot as it is. We hope all our Dad's and special friends had a great Father's Day

15.01.2022 Children's showing some very detailed and well executed perspective on their learning catches the attention of our educators and in turn, can turn into the children teaching their teachers! It is true what they say after all! You do learn something new everyday.....

14.01.2022 A cheer for Friday and feeling good. We have received some new equipment and with some help from our kinder children the yard was changed in a flash and....the children loved the new way or learning with new experiences! Quiet thoughtfulness, strengthening physical play ,resourceful imitation and role play of known knowledge and content self supporting independence. ... A good day indeed

14.01.2022 Spring has sprung This week, our Kinder children are talking about the season spring! They first had a discussion and shared if they have noticed the flowers on street and they are growing more and more as the weather gets warmer. We discussed that because they dont have any clothes or jackets to keep them warm during the cold winter, they were hiding under the ground to keep themselves away from the cold wind and comes out when its warm again.... We used flowers, leaves, sticks and seeds Jessica found on the street to make a Spring flower frame! Children were so excited to choose, touch and stick them into their frame! We had to be very considerate of which one to go where because it was difficult to get them off once we stick them on the sticky film.

12.01.2022 SHOUT OUT POST The last few months have been trying for everyone in different ways! Today I wanted to thank the team for sticking together, assisting each other, families and myself and keeping up the professional and positive work they are all amazing at. What better way to do that than focusing on the Red Core Value of Story House, Connectedness. "We value relationships and keep these at the core of what we do" which at the end of the day is the foundation of a positive, ...proactive, educational, respectful, holistic and focused service. Our "Red boxes of kind words and appreciation" allowed us to be humbled by our fellow educators letting each other know how much we value and respect each other and what we each as individuals bring to the table to make a whole. Each educator at SHEL Black Rock is a needed piece of the puzzle and for that I say, Thank You! See more

12.01.2022 Today is R U OK? Day. R U OK? is a not for profit organisation founded in 2009 with a vision of a world where we are all connected and are protected from suicide, as well as encouraging and equipping everyone to regularly and meaningfully ask are you ok?. At Story House Early Learning, we continue to work with our services to focus on promoting and supporting kindness, mental health and wellbeing for everyone within our Story House Family and beyond so please take the opportunity to check in with and look after someone. If you have a nagging feeling that someone you know or care about isnt behaving as they normally would, trust your instinct and act on it. #ruok #mentalhealth #beyondblue

12.01.2022 Zoom meeting with school friends Our kinder children were able attended the zoom meeting held by Black Rock Primary Foundation class 2020 which was held during our rest time. We all listened in to story time read by the principle and a short question and answer time with the foundation teachers. Some of our Kinder children will be going to the same school next year and although our original plans to go visit schools may not be able to happen as yet, we are still getting ...ready for it together by joining in on zoom meetings and online classes that are available. We were excited to see some of our friends that we haven't been able to see over the last few weeks as well as getting a head start to our future learning endeavours

11.01.2022 Patterns What is a pattern? Our Kinder children used shapes and lines they have been talking about to make different patterns! They noticed that many of our friends were wearing patterns and that they could find patterns all over the place in different forms! They also had a quick experiment of what patterns of sound and movement is like which they will be learning a bit more about during the rest of the week

11.01.2022 Square, diamond and rectangle.. oh my! Our kinder children have spent time discovering all kinds of things about these 3 shapes and how they can be made into different things such as, the diamond shape is actually a square, but turned around a little. Rectangle also has four sides and four corners, but it has two short sides and two long sides. They then went around the room to find things that were a square or rectangle after a short discussion because they all knew how to t...ell the difference between square and rectangle....smart little cookies! We were so amazed to find out how many things in our room are square or rectangle, even the ceiling! Why don't you try this at home and see how many shapes you can find around the place??

11.01.2022 Beehive village Children and their creativity never cease to amaze us! Carter used hexagon puzzles to make a long beehive, then turned it into a village. There was of course not enough colour in his village but there were no more hexagon blocks. Stopping to think for a while, he instead, explored through the resource shelf and found rainbow coloured cups and rainbow puzzle which will add more colours to his creation. Showing a use of different learned skills from previous play experiences and projects assists future learning and play building on each child's own knowledge!

10.01.2022 A HUGE THANK YOU to all of those who registered and attended our very first National Virtual Open Day. Through your participation the event was a great successes. Congratulations to the VIC winner ....... Molly - we will be in contact with you soon.

09.01.2022 From little things big things grow! Elaborating on a structural child initiated idea, one of our educators and kinder children took the opportunity to purposefully experiment with securing and bracing to "Make a Castle". Laying, organising and connecting the squares was the foundation of his castle. He was in the Castle construction building zone and it was glorious!... Nearing completion, a few extra special features were added Using the blocks and stacker cups he designed and placed environmentally friendly and sustainable water tanks, to ensure birds and animals were watered. Such a Fabulous example of persistence, learned experiences and putting what has been learned into play Well Done.

09.01.2022 Creative Experiences Planning on supporting the interests that have been modelled and voiced with paint, textas and pencils, our educator Kate designed a very simple invitation, in hope that the response of the children would then lead to how the invitation would evolve. And my gosh! did it ever! Having agency to make use of space and resources, they undertook expanding visual contributions with co-operative turn taking, social expressions of kindness and acting on similar ...interests. "Hulk " or rather "Hulky" the current hero of our centre, was reflectively versatile with personalities, skills and understanding of the character . He was very much an interesting topic today. Chewbacca got a mention in with Hulky, as well as a car, a monster truck, a Dragon experimentally painted, Hulk in muscle stance, glorious experimentation of rainbow formation, Hulk in Banana-Rama and the goody, bady Hulky! It was a busy time and all were energetically and happily involved in today.

07.01.2022 Experiment day - cause and effect reactions! This afternoon before the rain came to visit, there were more experiments! This time...cause and effect reactions, and needless to say..the reaction from our children was that of excitement! There was also talk of what the experiments looked like, with food like options such as bubble gum and ice cream being some of the responses. From the changing colours to the smells and sounds, there was so much to learn that the children discovered on their own and shared with each other!

07.01.2022 Fred the snail The kinder children and their teacher Jess have been looking after the Rosemary so well that they had to replant it from the garden into a separate pot as it was growing too big and taking space for other plants. Then, this is what weve found! A large black snail! Taka suggested to name him Fred. For the whole afternoon, we observed Fred moving, eating and hiding in his shell. It was like playing hide and seek with our new friend as sometime we just couldn't... find where is was! It was very tempting to not touch him because we loved him but we also knew that it can scare him when we touch him. Instead, we said a lot of positive words of encouragement such as Go, Fred! You can do it! You can make it to the other side!

06.01.2022 Child Protection week. Last week was child protection week and our Kinder children spent time discussing different situations and scenario that they may come across and what they would do with their teacher Jess. Some of the topics were the private parts of our body and who we can ask for help when we need help with our body i.e. when we need to take a shower or get changed. We shared which are the private parts of our body that we should not let anyone to look at it or touc...h it. Because we are the boss of our body no matter how small we are, if theres anybody trying to look at or touch your body part, we will say No, stop! My body, my choice! They talked about who the strangers are as according to the statistics, the most common way the stranger approaches children out of impure motive is by asking children to come and help them. We also joined in on Australias biggest child protection lesson that was available online held by Daniel Morcombe Foundation. To end the week, we all dressed in white for white balloon day, a day we remember the children who were in unsafe situation and unable to protect themselves or seek for help. Our children were very passionate filling up their balloons with many special items. It was a positive end to the week that we helped raise awareness for child protection.

05.01.2022 Wander, curiosity and questioning are essential ingredients to understanding. It is with these key ingredients, children reflected on the self portraits that are hanging in our studio. A component and goal of acknowledgement of identity and sense of Belonging. The next half hour we investigated visually, with sensory hands on approach and discussed what was able to be supported with known knowledge. Using senses of touch, vision, what that information meant to each of us and... how it encouraged similar belief.Next we searched deeper with curiosity and questioning. Questioning over favoring colours, bows in hair, smiles that felt the same, eyes that were the right shape and my favorite a very confident confirmation that it would be highly unlikely to have more than one head . Self extension and watching the pride on faces with the end results, it was clear they were gaining a strong sense of self awareness and comfort in their community.

04.01.2022 How is the weather today? How can we find out how the weather is going to be for the day? Last week, our kinder children were very interested in the change of the weather, the sun being out more and some children getting itchy eyes from the wind! We looked at the weather forecast to find it out. Weve noticed the pictures on the forecast which indicates the weather. We discussed what each picture looks like, whats on it and what it means.... Then, we chose the picture which best describes the weather of today which was sunny and cloudy. As soon as weve chosen the picture, a strong sunlight came into the room which we had to change the picture because it was no longer cloudy. This is a great start and way for the children to learn about nature and earths elements. Children having knowledge of weather also can help with anxiety and nerves that may also come with such things as thunderstorms and winds.

03.01.2022 Im a little seed learning took over mat time and our children turned into little seed ready to grow into big adult plants

03.01.2022 Zoom meeting with Charlie Sillypants. We got to join in on another Zoom meeting with Black Rock Primary. Our kinder children were excited to see their friends on the screen and looking at their reactions too! We missed everyone so much and cant wait to see you soon . We watched the puppet show with Charlie Sillypants and we danced together. It went for about 45minutes which flew passed because we had so much fun!... Even though we are limited in what we can do and who we can see during these times, Its so nice to be able to still have the opportunity to join in on school events and for the children to be able to see some teachers and children who they may see again in the new year.

03.01.2022 Our babies are becoming babies no more and transitioning to 'big kid beds' This week we have thought it would be nice for our older children to enjoy the benefits of sleeping outdoors. 1. Better sleep The cold air helps babies and toddlers sleep better, deeper and longer. It also helps them fall asleep easier even once they are older.... 2. Less illness Children who sleep outdoors spend less time in dry, recycled air which can allow the flu, virus and common colds to easily spread among the children. 3. Improved learning Children who sleep better are more rested and they can benefit from improved alertness and better cognitive performance. 4. Calmer babies By spending more time in nature, looking at the beauty and smelling the fresh air, children who sleep outdoors benefit from nature’s calming effect. 5. Healthy habits By spending a lot of time outdoors from a young age, children can internalise these habits early on in their lives which can help them become healthier adults. We recommend the outside sleeping routine for our little friends and would love to see some shared pictures of the calming sleeping environments.

02.01.2022 Present for the special person We have been very busy making this surprise present for the special person (which is a secret)! We firstly sat down picturing the special person and come up with some colours we can think of when we think about that person. Then, we used those colours to paint the pot as a special gift! It was finished with the final touch of glitter, wishing the magical spell will make us happy all the time

02.01.2022 Animal x-rays... Our kinder children continued learning about hospitals in many different forms, and todays focus was the Vet, the animal doctor . Why cant animals go to the hospital that we go to? That was one of the many questions our cleaver, inquisitive children came up with and that we discussed. ... After watching a short clip of x-rays of animals, we got to see the real x-rays of human body! The x-ray of hands looked so spiky and the back bone looked like a train track! Such a great learning opportunity especially in times like we are in now. Stay safe everyone

02.01.2022 Its finally here. Today is the day we hold our Careers Virtual Event. You have until 10am to register your details. https://app.smartsheet.com//de9a9bd9607c4bff9a73dfca9f7293 See you all later.

01.01.2022 Only 5 days to go until our virtual careers open day. Do not forget to register your details to receive the zoom link and come along to hear from some of our educators and learn what it is like to work at Story House. We look forward to seeing you there.

01.01.2022 Be creative......It's Science Week... Narelle being our onsite experimental expert has been conducting some experiments for science week. Today was volcanoes and bubbles. The children made their own bubble wands! Dont think we expected the theme to be so creative however the children were impressed with what they had achieved! They were able to take these home and share what they have learned with their families. Science education and activities are important in early childhood as it provides children with opportunities to further develop and practice many different skills such as communication, collaborative work with their peers and perseverance, as well as analytical thinking, reasoning and problem-solving and cause and effect with the reactions. More science to come....watch this space.....

01.01.2022 Goodbye Caterpillar friend... Finishing off the toddler rooms cycle of interest in caterpillars, It was with a good balance of what I know intrigues, humours and challenges them that we concluded with this paper towel, water and marker experiment invitation. Sharing space in our community studio, our kinder children were invited to join in and trial their approaches.... There was so much to observe and going on with multi- levels of peer to peer support, broad questioning ,thinking and reasoning and a whole lot of fun and wild laughter. A great way to conclude wouldn't you say!
