17.01.2022 Today we light the first purple candle on the Advent wreath, the prophets’ candle. The role of the prophets is not that of fortune tellers, predicting the future. A Prophet is one that calls God’s people back to God when they have strayed, reminding us of who we are and who we are called to be. Today’s Psalm proclaims that if we see the face of God, we will be saved. But God’s face is not hidden from us, rather God is revealed to us in Jesus, in the Word, in the sacraments and in each one that God has created. But like Jeff - fittingly for Advent the purple Wiggle - we sometimes close our eyes, (and our ears and our hearts) to God. If we Stay Awake with open hearts, as the Gospel calls us to, God’s spirit will dwell in us and lead us to the fullness of life.

10.01.2022 Todays Gospel challenges us as it did the people of the early Church. For those who had known and followed Jesus the thought that new Gentile converts were as close to Him as they were must have been difficult. If we consider it in the context of our family life, however, it seems far more reasonable. The newborn child is loved as much by its parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles as every one that came before it. As a parish community we owe much to those that came before us but know that God holds each of us in his infinite and merciful love. Diocese of Parramatta
