24.01.2022 Well done good and faithful servant We look forward to seeing you again.

23.01.2022 THANKSGIVING SERVICE FOR JASON PAGE The service of Thanksgiving for Jason's life will be at Canberra Girls Grammar,(48 Melbourne Ave, Deakin) Saturday 28 November, 2pm with afternoon tea back at St Peter's after. Jason loved life and enjoyed food. One of his favourite jobs was ensuring that morning tea was satisfactory enough to be served to the masses. There were so many dishes and treats that he loved. ... The Page family would love to ask our church community if there was a treat, a dish, a cake, a slice, a sandwich that you knew Jason loved, could you please make a plate and deliver to the church hall on Saturday for a celebration of Jason’s life following the Thanksgiving service. The Pages greatly appreciate the love and support that you have been providing them during this time. Some volunteers from Stromlo Church are going to be at St Peter's from 12 noon setting up marques etc so you can drop off food then (or any time from 9am to 6pm on Friday). If you would like to help with serving the afternoon tea please contact Julie M via her mobile.

20.01.2022 If after watching this service you would like to speak to someone please feel welcome to call the office on 62871193 or Guerin on 0408199950.

19.01.2022 ST JOHN’S CARE UPDATE: ‘ONWARDS AND UPWARDS FOR SASHA’ We first met Sasha a couple of months ago when she called the centre seeking some assistance. Sasha was a young mother to three sons and lived in NSW, where she had a great job as a pharmacist.... Sasha’s relationship with her fiancé began to deteriorate & he was becoming increasingly violent. She lived in constant fear of what may happen next, so she made the difficult decision to flee her home and move to Canberra. Upon arriving in Canberra Sasha had no friends or family, no place to live, no job, a small amount of funds, and her young sons to care for. She found accommodation in a cheap motel and realised that this was not sustainable. She began searching for support before coming across St John’s Care on the internet and deciding to come seek support. I sat down with Sasha, provided her with a warm meal and a coffee and begun to have a chat with her about some suggestions that would help her move forward. Sasha had never received support before, so she was naturally hesitant to discuss her situation with a stranger. Her biggest concern was that she would be unable to provide food her children, and that she would be unable to find employment. The volunteers prepared a family pack containing fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, and some frozen meals. When she opened her pack and saw shampoo and conditioner she began to cry, acknowledging that she was unable to wash her own hair for weeks. I was able to put Sasha in touch with the domestic violence line, and some other agencies to link in to support her. When she left the centre, Sasha had a look of hope and relief on her face. St John’s Care has continued to provide Sasha and her family with ongoing support in the form of meals, fruit and vegetables and other support. Last week Sasha came into the Centre and was overwhelmed with joy. She informed us that she had recently gained employment as a pharmacist, and that with our support, she had moved into a permanent home with her children. Sasha is extremely grateful to now be in a position where she can provide a stable life for her family and provide them with a memorable Christmas this year. During these hard and uncertain times, St John’s Care continues to provide support and assistance to Canberra families who need it the most. Kind regards, Jason Haines Acting Executive Officer Items required: Pasta Sauce, Tinned Fruit and Vegetables, Vegemite/honey/jam, flour

15.01.2022 UPDATE FROM ST JOHN’S CARE: ‘ELIZABETH’S CHRISTMAS JOY’ A couple of weeks ago, I met Elizabeth (not her real name) at the Centre. She had experienced some tough times recently and was very concerned about not being able to celebrate Christmas with her family this year. Elizabeth had been visiting the centre for months after escaping a war-torn country in Africa. She had started a young family in Canberra and had a steady income through full time employment. Elizabeth had lost... her job recently due to COVID and was now struggling to get by. I gave her a warm meal and a cup of tea, and we sat down for a chat in the shade. Elizabeth was quite stressed and anxious about the fact that Christmas was quickly approaching, and that she was not able to provide a memorable Christmas for her family. I mentioned that we were opening the present room, and that we were also providing a Christmas hamper to those who registered this year. Her eyes filled up with tears and a smile grew across her face. We were able to assist her with her bills and gave her a family food pack complete with some extra lunchbox snacks for her children. Last week she visited the Centre to collect her Christmas hamper and to choose some gifts from the Present room. She was shocked when she entered the Present room and could not believe the generosity of those who had donated toys. We selected some gifts for her children as well as some wrapping paper, a Christmas hamper and a gift card. As we were loading everything into her car, Elizabeth broke down in tears. I would love to give you a big hug right now but I can’t, thank you so much, you don’t understand how much this means to me, she said with tears rolling down her face. Elizabeth is one of the many clients that we will be assisting this Christmas period, who have never received support previously. Your donations go directly towards allowing us to provide relief for many people who are struggling this festive period. Kind regards, Robbie Speldewinden Program Coordinator Items required: Tinned Fruit, Tinned Vegetables, Tinned Meat, 500ml Olive Oil/Cooking Oil, Vegemite/Jam/Honey, Weetbix, Deodorant

14.01.2022 ST JOHN’S CARE UPDATE: ‘When referrals bridge gaps’ Many young people go through upward battles when it comes to renting in Canberra. Renting is expensive. How many young ones can afford to rent their own little flat? Imagine you are young; your job is only casual basis with barely enough hours to buy food for the week let alone pay rent. A couple of weeks ago Kim (not her real name) called St John’s Care asking for help. She is in her late 20s, working as a casual support wo...rker and her pay the week before was negligible as her employer could only give her 8 hours work. Kim was to work a minimum of 15 hours a week but Covid had impacted that. Kim was invited to come in for a case management meeting which she happily accepted and turned up 15 min early (talking about keen youth!) It turned out Kim was also studying part time to complete her Diploma of Community Services. Guess what? She was not receiving any Centrelink support at all. After a long session with Kim, Nailia, our Case Manager, found out that Kim was suffering from anxiety, depression and childhood related PTSD. On top of that, she finds it difficult to navigate the Centrelink system and she gave up on it. Consequently, her support payments were stopped, and she felt she was getting nowhere with Centrelink. When we offered to advocate on her behalf at first she refused, wanting nothing to do with what can be an unsympathetic system. However SJC wanted to refer her to a very special Human Services team called Community Engagement. SJC has a very good relationship with the Centrelink Community Engagement Officers who do a fantastic job to help people in various difficult situations. After speaking further, Kim warmed up to the idea and a few days later she connected with them. Nailia also connected her with a different employment provider who is understanding of her circumstances as a part-time student, needing more hours and suffering from PTSD. Even though Kim has now started to receive Centrelink support she is still not receiving the hours she needs from her new employer. However, she called SJC to say a huge thank you for referring her to people who care. Kim is now more optimistic about her work and studies, and doesn’t have that feeling of defeat about the future that brought her to SJC in the first place. Hopefully, many people who have lost their jobs will find new opportunities. But there will be many left behind, struggling with unaffordable rent - some with significant rent arrears, and diminishing JobKeeper government support. Thankfully at St John’s Care, we will continue to support people like Kim who are struggling for whatever reason. Items Required: Shampoo, conditioner, men’s deodorant, honey, vegemite
