24.01.2022 THE STAGE IS SET AFTER 13 truckloads of concrete, totalling 64 cubic metres, a very early start for contractors from the north west coast of Tasmania, and more than nine hours on site, today, the stage is now set for construction of Strait Brands new production and packaging facility, at Permian Springs, York Town. Led by Matt Savage, of Matt Savage Construction, a team consisting of Murfet Building, Banfield Concrete Solutions, and Concrete Pumping, delivered a magnificent ...result in typical Tasmanian winter weather - windy, cold, clear and then intermittent heavy rain. An almost military-style logistics operation meant the team were well served by a recurrent convoy of trucks from Exeter Concrete as the first three and a half hours whisked by non-stop. Ever the good boss, Matt even laid on a barbecue breakfast of bacon and egg rolls - a generator-powered electric kettle - and a lunch of burgers to keep the boys strong. The Strait Man enjoyed his breakfast, too. Strait Brands is truly grateful to everyone who contributed to this great effort on a momentous day in the 15 years history of the business.

24.01.2022 Happy World Gin Day #4 When Strait Brands introduced Strait Tasmanian Strawberry Gin, in November 2017, it was again a first - in Australia. Created by macerating Tamar Valley strawberries in Strait Dry Gin, it is full of flavour and enhanced by the organic lemon zest that has always been a signature of our gins, since 2006.... This natural flavour enhancer evokes the most frequent comment at tastings: "It tastes just like strawberries." Well, it does. It was always meant to.

22.01.2022 OUR Strait Brands Easter Lock Down TasSnap today is a Winter sunrise in the Tamar Valley, taken from Bradys Lookout, on the western side of the river, looking towards Mounts Barrow and Arthur.

22.01.2022 More stirrings in the Bush.

21.01.2022 INLAND today and to a magnificent Tasmanian location seldom seen by those in a car, but a welcome sight for those traversing the world famous Overland Track, between Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair. For many of the more than 9,000 trekkers on the 65kms Overland Track, which takes its participants through alpine plains, wild rivers, temperate rainforest and glacial mountains, being beside the imperious Mount Olympus, at the confluence of the Narcissus River, is the moment th...e boots come off and the flip flops (thongs) go on. The most intrepid of the Tracks participants continue 22kms along the western perimeter of Lake St Clair to the Parks and Wildlife Centre, at its southern point and along the way trudge through the foot hills of Olympus. But, in our view, its those who opt for the ferry ride instead that see the majestic Mount Olympus in all its glory from a breathtaking, on-the-water experience. Yes, Cradle Mountain has Dove Lake, but Lake St Clair, Australias deepest lake, at 160m, shares its stage with six mountains, all of which are visible in some gargantuan measure from the ferry. It is an absolute delight. So, apart from Mt Olympus, which The Strait Man declares became his favourite Tasmanian peak - once he found it - we have Mounts Acropolis, Ida, Hugel, Rufus, and Manfred. And for those of you in your own vehicle or hire car, you will not see any of this from the road, or even the car park. Turn off the Hobart to Queenstown (A10) Lyell Highway, at Derwent Bridge, and head for Lake St Clair, but before you take the 6kms, call into the Derwent Bridge Hotel or the Hungry Wombat for a feed or supplies. Afterwards, head to the man-made, natural wonder of anywhere The Wall in the Wilderness, depicting the rich history of Tasmanias Central Highlands. Book your ferry in advance through Lake St Clair Lodge, and if you want to stay overnight, try the Derwent Bridge Hotel or Derwent Bridge Chalets. Motorhome and caravan parking is available, as is overnight camping. Treat yourself, and take a friend, friends, or family. #tasmania #brandtasmania #tourismtasmania #tourismindustrycounciltasmania #centralhighlands #highlandstasmania #lakestclair #overlandtrack #mountolympus #derwentbridge #centralhighlandscouncil #lyellhighway #thewallinthewilderness #gin #vodka #tasmaniangin #tasmanianvodka #tasmanianspirits #australiangin #australianvodka #petergutwein #lapoftasmania

21.01.2022 Happy World Gin Day #5 When it comes to Top Shelf, they dont come much more Top Shelf than Strait Cameo Tasmanian Berry Gin. Evolved from a combination of Tasmanian raspberries, strawberries and blueberries and the iconic Strait Dry Gin, this pink gin was launched in December 2018, at the peak of the berry season.... Strait Cameo plays just a cameo role in the expanding multi-million dollar Tasmanian berry industry, which is the largest in Australia and expanding annually. We buy berries that are either too large, or too small, for supermarket chains at home and abroad, and blend them to deliver this supreme gin. Presented in a re-usable decanter - the glass stopper costs more than the bottle - it is taking pride of place on the top shelf of many a cocktail cabinet and bar. When Byron Simms, of Tandys Alehouse, in Launceston, was asked yesterday how customers were drinking Strait Cameo, he replied: "Straight, of course." That would be a Strait answer.

20.01.2022 FOUR MORE SLEEPS THATS it, four more Get Ups until we pour our 360m2 slab at Badger Head Road, York Town. All framed up, reo in place, and ready to go.... Pouring starts in the early hours of Tuesday morning and, frankly, we cant wait. Our story started with Strait Vodka and so it proudly takes its rightful place in this photo.

20.01.2022 OFTEN over the last 16 years, since the initial thoughts of a Tasmanian spirits business devoted to vodka and gin were spawned, it has been like a battle in the trenches. But now, these carefully sculptured ditches are a sign that Strait Brands is preparing to poke its head above the parapet and tackle international markets once again. The first stages of boxing for the concrete slab at our new production and packaging facility, at York Town, northern Tasmania, are underway a...nd after years of viewing a bald, gravel pad, there are true indications that work really is in progress. Good weather means the reinforced mesh and under-concrete pipework will be in place by close of play today. #straitbrands #trenches #sculpture #tasmania #gin #vodka #brandtasmania #westtamar #tamar #yorktown

19.01.2022 AS EASY AS ONE, TWO, THREE Pioneering Tasmanian spirits producer Strait Brands York Town development was the hive of activity when a further 90 cubic metres of gravel was delivered and laid ahead of slab preparation, which begins on Monday, May 20. Laser assessment by David, of Bison Constructions, had identified the original gravel pad, at Permian Springs had settled a little too well at the eastern end, after 10 years, and even though the property is a former commercial qu...arry, it was decided carting in material from elsewhere and getting it laid within 24 hours was the best option. And, property owner David Hassell quickly put his hand up to open the gate early to get things moving. So, eight truckloads of gravel from Beams Bros quarry, at Flowery Gully, were brought in for Alan, of Scottsdale Bobcat Hire, to perform a Bobcat Ballet and speedily lay and roll, in expert fashion. The result, precision. This was a problem solved by exceptional team work and the slab now looks like a marble bench top, ready for Monday and framing for the 30 metre by 12 metre slab. Another item gratefully ticked off the list, said Strait Brands founder Philip Ridyard. Strait Brands is building a 1080 cubic metre production and packaging facility capable of filling 800 bottles of vodka or gin per hour, or a shipping container every three days. #straitbrands #brandatsmania #tasmanianspirits #tasmanianvodka #tasmaniangin #australianspirits #australiangin #spirits #strait #bobcat #ballet #beamsbros #bisonconstructions #scottsdale #jobs #yorktown #westtamar

19.01.2022 EVERYONE at Strait Brands is in high spirits after being judged Australian Spirits Manufacturer of the Year in a UK-based business competition. The accolade, resulted from unknown third party nominations to the LUX Life Food & Drinks Awards 2020, and subsequent judging of a submission by the company, which was established in the Tamar Valley, of northern Tasmania, in 2004. Strait Brands featured its response to the Covid-19 crisis and interaction with customers, current and p...otential employees, plus its expansion plans, in its submission. LUX Life digital magazine, which has a global circulation of 238,000, said that following shortlisting, Strait Brands had been subjected to a rigorous vetting procedure. Our extensive research and judging process is driven by merit and centred around an in-depth evaluation of skills and services on offer, said Food & Drink Awards 2020 executive Katherine Benton. Awardees must demonstrate expertise within their field, dedication to customer service and a commitment to excellence. It enforces LUX Lifes stance that victors are not determined by popularity of votes, but by their contributions to their industry. Strait Brands founder and managing director Philip Ridyard, who completes six months based in the UK on Sunday, September 13, after being stranded by lockdown and subsequent events, said the award emphasised that a ground breaking and unconventional approach to developing a spirits business, not only in Tasmania, but Australia as a whole, brought dividends. As a strong brand we have achieved a number of firsts in our history and many of those have been achieved by thinking outside the box and being ahead of the competition in terms of innovation and new products, national and international ambition, and most of all, embracing Tasmanian growers and other suppliers in the development of ground breaking spirits, Philip said. The Covid-19 scenario has enabled us to re-energise our operations and make a number of significant leaps forward, while assisting our customers in keeping their own heads above water by buying back stock, and launching a successful online recruitment drive that has brought some enormously talented, locally-based people to the surface. This international recognition from LUX Life Food & Drinks Awards is tribute to our entire, extended Strait Brands team, including customers, and the massive amount of work that has gone on behind the scenes, embracing the contribution of all stakeholders in the Strait brand over the last 16 years, he added. #straitbrands #jobs #covid19 #coronavirus #lockdown #tasmanianspirits #gin #tasmaniangin #vodka #tasmanianvodka #westtamar #tasmania #brandtasmania #unemployment #opportunity #givingpeopleachance #cocktails #tasmanianjobs #tasmaniangovernment #manufacturing #hospitality #cellardoor #freight #production #packaging #sloegin #springwater #awards #manufacturing #australia #AustralianMade

17.01.2022 SOURCE is an important word in the story of Strait Brands as its new production and packaging facility is being built on the property from where it draws the spring water that gives its spirits such legendary smoothness, so today, in our TasSnaps series, we feature a town with legendary status that has also depended on a prolific water source. Tarraleah, is a classic Hydro Electric Commission town, built in the 1930s, and opened in 1934, to house management and the pioneering... workers building the electricity generation system that would eventually drive heavy industrial growth within Tasmania. The source of the water? Lake St Clair, which is at the head of the Derwent River system that, via gravity, drives the turbines in numerous power stations via rivers, lakes, canals and enormous steel tubes called penstocks. One of the greatest sights along the Lyell Highway, between Hobart and Queenstown, is the close proximity of Tungatinah and Tarraleah power stations, which operate to this day and have undergone recent upgrading. The almost vertical plunge of the penstocks either side of the Nive River into their respective power stations is breathtaking and catches travellers so much by surprise that they deliver the ubiquitous, WOW!! moment. Todays photo the Tarraleah penstocks, diving down to the power station on the banks of the Nive River, taken by The Strait Man, from the lookout at the eastern side of the town. In recent years, Tarraleah has been substantially refurbished in a multi-million development by Friend of Strait, Julian Homer, who started work on the transformation in 2003 with the intention of saving the town for the people of Tasmania. All the workers fibro homes have gone but the impressive Lodge, and art deco management family homes, the old school house, church and community hall have been brought back to former splendour and the town boasts a pub, restaurant, caf and shop. Now, there is accommodation in the Lodge, houses, and school hall, plus cabins, camping and a site for motorhomes and caravans. Tarraleah is a great place to tour the lakes and mountains of the Central Highlands and follow pursuits such as trout fishing, boating, white water kayaking and rafting, bush walking and mountain climbing. #tasmania #brandtasmania #tourismtasmania #tourismindustrycounciltasmania #hydrotasmania #tasnetworks #sustainablepower #centralhighlands #tarraleahestate #highlandstasmania #lakestclair #overlandtrack #mountolympus #derwentbridge #centralhighlandscouncil #lyellhighway #thewallinthewilderness #gin #vodka #tasmaniangin #tasmanianvodka #tasmanianspirits #australiangin #australianvodka #petergutwein #lapoftasmania

17.01.2022 IN a wind down moment after another busy week, The Strait Man decided to visit relatively new venue, Rupert & Hound, at Launceston Seaport. Saturday lunch time and the place was bouncing. It provided the opportunity to enjoy a Tassie Tart - Strait Tasmanian Hazelnut Gin, lemon and egg white (shaken, not stirred) - which, we might say, certainly hit the taste buds where they like it.... Rupert & Hound is a brother restaurant to Cataract on Paterson, another venue where Straits vodka and gin range is on the drinks and cocktails menu. #straitbrands #straithazelnut #tasmania #tasmaniangin #tasmanianvodka #rupertandhound #cataractonpaterson #launcestonseaport #tassie #tart #paperstraw #hazelnuts #tamarvalleyhazelnuts #tamarvalley #yorktown #brandtasmania

16.01.2022 Happy World Gin Day!! Award-winning Strait Dry Gin, the first premium dry gin produced in Australia, April 13, 2006. Years ahead of its time, and still probably the smoothest.... Drink over ice with a squeeze of orange or lime.

16.01.2022 D-Day, June 6, 2019.

15.01.2022 THE STRAIT MAN IN UK ISOLATION Strait Brands founder and Australian premium gin pioneer Philip Ridyard is currently in government-imposed isolation in the United Kingdom. The Strait Man travelled from Tasmania, at short notice on March 12, following the death of his 82 year old mother, and is currently running the international award winning business from a dining table in a North Wales cottage....Continue reading

15.01.2022 SINCE, even though it is the Easter holidays, our Tasmanian friends are very much isolated at home, obeying the Stay Home, Stay Safe message, we thought we would bring Tasmania to you over the next few days with some scenic shots taken by The Strait Man as he has travelled around our great state. Apparently, he has some good snaps of North Wales, in the UK, too, during his isolation, but they are not really relelvant. So, to start, its the gravel escarpment through which f...lows the super-soft spring water that gives Straits spirits their renowned smoothness, to the point that you can actually drink our products, straight or over ice. Strait Brands is currently working on several developments on the Permian Springs property, at York Town, including bottling spirits and spring water, at source.

07.01.2022 WHEN Bison Constructions get to work they dont hang about. The roof for our new production and packaging facility was framed by 10am this morning. Great work lads. Gorgeous morning for it, too,

06.01.2022 OUR thoughts are with the community of North West Tasmania as they face even more strict lock down restrictions due to a concentrated COVID-19 cell around the Burnie area. This prompted this mornings TasSnap, by The Strait Man, taken at a deserted Marrawah Beach, looking north. Stay Home, Stay Safe, Stay Alive.

06.01.2022 Happy World Gin Day #5 When it comes to Top Shelf, they don't come much more Top Shelf than Strait Cameo Tasmanian Berry Gin. Evolved from a combination of Tasmanian raspberries, strawberries and blueberries and the iconic Strait Dry Gin, this 'pink' gin was launched in December 2018, at the peak of the berry season.... Strait Cameo plays just a 'cameo role' in the expanding multi-million dollar Tasmanian berry industry, which is the largest in Australia and expanding annually. 05.01.2022 JOBS TO LIFT SPIRITS Pioneering Tamar Valley spirits producer Strait Brands is opening up post-Covid 19 job opportunities across a range of positions as it begins to put its international expansion plans into play. Up to 40 full, part-time and casual jobs will be created within 18 months, with multiple flow-on jobs among suppliers and service providers.... Prospective employees are encouraged to contact the business as it seeks talent in production, packaging, fruit processing, procurement, administration, logistics/warehousing, cellar door and sales. Managing Director Philip Ridyard, who has been running the business from lockdown in the UK since mid-March, says numerous jobs will be created at the companys York Town site, north of Beaconsfield, as it seeks to meet new sales contracts in Australia and overseas, sealed during the Coronavirus crisis. Strait Brands had been expecting an influx of investor funds in early February, but the proponents are, like Philip, marooned overseas unable to fly back into Australia. The funding for completion of Stage One is secured and that will take us to 800 and then 3,800 bottles of vodka and gin per hour within six months of commissioning. We have additional investors waiting for on-site presentations prior to launching Stages 2 and 3 of our multi-million dollar expansion project that will accommodate new products, made from Tasmanian-grown ingredients, in a diverse portfolio for international markets, said Philip. This is a business, originally founded in 2004, because I had been out of work for 18 months and, despite 400 applications, couldnt get an interview, never mind a job, said Philip, who has been straddling time zones and working seven days a week while in lockdown in North Wales, after flying to handle family matters following the death of his mother, at the beginning of March. I understand the pain and uncertainty that goes with unemployment, the effect on families and relationships and the mental anguish involved in losing a job, the unknown zone of unemployment, and then, especially in the current Covid-19 climate, of seeking work when it seems thousands of others in Tasmania are doing the same. Every email will be acknowledged and everyone contacted personally, he said. I am inviting anyone who has lost a job, expects to, or wants more employment security, to contact the business at email [email protected] with a resume detailing skills and experience. We want people to have confidence they can make a contribution to Strait Brands exciting future journey. www.facebook.com/straitvodka #straitbrands #jobs #covid19 #coronavirus #lockdown #tasmanianspirits #gin #tasmaniangin #vodka #tasmanianvodka #westtamar #tasmania #brandtasmania #unemployment #opportunity #givingpeopleachance #cocktails #tasmanianjobs #tasmaniangovernment #manufacturing #hospitality #cellardoor #freight #production #packaging #sloegin #springwater

04.01.2022 Happy World Gin Day #3 Locally-grown Tasmanian Tamar Valley hazelnuts are the critical ingredient of the Worlds only hazelnut gin, introduced in 2016. Crushed, roasted nuts are steeped in international award-winning Strait Dry Gin and then filtered to deliver this unique delight, enjoyed straight, with tonic, or in a cocktail, such as Espresso Martini.... Our personal favourite is the Lucien Gaudin. 45ml Strait Tasmanian Hazelnut Gin. 22ml Cointreau. 22ml Campari. 22ml Dry Vermouth (preferably Noilly Prat). Stir with ice and serve in a coupe glass. Serve with orange and roasted hazelnuts on a stick.

04.01.2022 NEVER let it be said we let the grass grow under our feet, just two days after the slab was polished off. Today, the steelwork and insulation were delivered, ahead of the start of construction of our new production and packaging facility, at Permian Springs, York Town, Tasmania, on Monday. Bison Constructions even turned up with their own telehandler to aid the operation.... All delivered safely and strategically placed on site. The early start on Monday morning might need some planning, too. Nil degrees temperature predicted.

03.01.2022 IT is only natural on our tour of the West Coast that we would visit Strahan and todays view is of sunset at Strahan from Risby Cove. It is amazing the number of Tasmanians who tell The Strait Man they have never been to the West Coast. Its astounding. As rail journeys go, this is near the top of the tree, so put it on your list of things to do in Tasmania once we are given the all clear and have our freedom to roam this great state. 01.01.2022 EDWARD knows the drill!!

01.01.2022 The Strait Man on the road... A Charlie Chaplin, devised by the great man himself at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, New York. The essential cocktail featuring Strait Tasmanian Sloe Gin, at Boodle Beasley, North Hobart. There was a slight hiccup as The Strait Man asked for a Charlie Chaplin with Strait Sloe Gin and nearly got the cocktail AND a straight, Strait Tasmanian Sloe Gin.... A moment of slapstick if ever there was one.

01.01.2022 Happy World Gin Day #2 Strait Tasmanian Sloe Gin. First commercially produced sloe gin in Australia, 2010. We dont pick from the hedgerows because they are often contaminated with roadside spraying.... Our sloes come jointly from a farm and an orchard in northern Tasmania where blackthorn was planted as internal boundary fences between 1817 and 1823. Blackthorn was the original, and natural, barbed wire.
