22.01.2022 all the houses will be designed in the Shikumen # style: grey brick walls black doors, brown stone door frames, small courtyards, various wings, winding wo...oden staircases. The buildings will be arranged along lanes and criss cross each other, exactly the same as in the original design of the foreign concessions. 05.01.2022 Ive been blessed to be around some of the most passionate greatest artists/musicians of the world as I move around spheres and terrains (like a rolling stone?)... over the last 30 years. As Im invited to be included in 6 bands/groups tp play live music in New York in the next few weeks (2 gigs this coming week) and making an album with a musician in Boston, I cant help thinking of my first art collaboration outside China, with two of the kind Australians who helped and supported me through tough times just after I left a horrible marriage where I was the subject of domestic violence from my husband at the time, a white Australian man. The two artists who initiated and run the multi-media project are a couple: my former flatmate Geoffrey James Weary and his wife Tatjana Pentez who both specialize in and teach digital art and films. On my visit to Sydney in 1998 after I had moved to Hong Kong for good to work as a print journalist a year before, they invited me to be a model and dancer in their multi-media project, Strange Cities, about Tatjianas Russian grandparents who lived in China till early 1950s. Tatianas grandfather Sergei Ermolaeff, a Jewish Russian who was born in Tianjin and had never visited Russia, was a renowned jazz musician in China in the 1930s and 1940s. He was the leader of a big jazz band at the Cathay Hotel in Shanghai. Tatjianas grandmother Xenya had fled to China from Russia during the Bolshevik Revolution and met Sergei in China. The couple were rubbing shoulders with the rich the powerful the popular the wild the weird in high-society balls and receptions in the concession areas (parts of Shanghai colonized by various Western countries). Then Shanghai fell to the Japanese troops during WWII. Then the Peoples Liberation Army of the Chinese Communist Party took over China in 1949. The Ermolaeffs were forced by the Chinese Communist government to leave China in 1951, like thousands of other foreign refugees/immigrants in China. The couple settled in Sydney but lived in Shanghai forever. They were ridiculed by neighbors and even family members, forgotten by society, passed away in obscurity and erased by history, until Tatjiana pieced together their stories through old photos, letters and documents they left behind. "Scenes From A Shanghai Hotel" is a short film Geoffrey and Tatjiana made with the Australian Film Commission as part of their "Strange Cities" project. The plot is based on the life of Tatjianas grandmother and the Cathay Hotel where grandfather Sergei led the house band. Now the hotel, on the Bund, is called Peace Hotel, with a house band comprising of musicians as old as 90, who used to play there in the 40s. If you watch this film, turn up the volume and use good headphones/speakers. The tracks are wonderful, including a popular Shanghai jazz song in the 1930s by mega Chinese film star Zhou Xuan, whose nicknamed "Golden Throat" for her angelic voice and dreamy sensual singing. The visuals include Tatjianas old family photos and archival footage of the old Shanghai in the 1930s, and videos Geoffrey shot over their trips to Shanghai. And me, at age 29, playing the role of a Shanghai cabaret-dancer-turned-revolutionary. Now China to me is my past, another planet, I appreciate this wonderful film even more:
