21.01.2022 On the upside-all the cancelled meetings and workshops mean my house is clean, I could shop a little for a neighbour who is self isolating as a precaution, check in on my other neighbour, go to Bunnings and observe a 2 metre gap without trying because it was deserted, and drop off some magazines to a community member whose mum has come up to stay during this upheaval. What is the upside for you? #ontheupside, #glasshalffull, #grateful, #communitystrong

17.01.2022 2020 DISABILITY SUPPORT AWARDS POSTPONED The 2020 Disability Support Awards have been postponed in response to the developments in public health concerns and ad...vice regarding COVID-19. The Western Australian Department of Health has indicated that there will be a potentially higher risk during the time the Awards were originally scheduled. NDS has made this decision to prioritise the health of people with disability and to support the disability sector to prioritise their organisations response to COVID-19 during this time. Judging for the 2020 Disability Support Awards is currently underway and will continue as planned. Finalists and Winners of the 2020 Disability Support Awards will be announced at the rescheduled event date to be advised soon. 10.01.2022 An online survey has been launched by the Department of Communities to gather community feedback on accessible parking in Western Australia. The ACROD Parking P...rogram currently supports people with significant mobility restrictions to access the community by providing permits for accessible ACROD parking bays. In February, Minister for Disability Services, Stephen Dawson, announced a review of the eligibility criteria for ACROD Parking Permits. The review will explore the potential to expand the eligibility criteria to include people who require access to bays with specific dimensions or proximity. The survey is open to anyone who has experience of or an opinion on accessible parking including people with disability or a medical condition, carers, support workers, community service providers and taxi drivers, with all feedback welcome. Communities encourages you to share the survey with your networks so that any changes made to the eligibility criteria of the ACROD Parking Program are contemporary and meet the needs of the community. Access to the survey is via the Communities Have Your Say webpage. The survey closes 5pm Friday 31 July, 2020. www.communities.wa.gov.au//western-australian-acrod-eligi/

09.01.2022 Is your support worker the best of the best? Time is running out to nominate them for a 2020 WA Disability Support Award. Every year the Awards shine a light on... the achievements of some remarkable disability support workers, such as Patrick Costello, a previous winner of the Excellence in Supporting Social Inclusion Award. A former maths teacher, Patrick came out of retirement eight years ago to take up a position with Life Without Barriers. Patrick was recognised for his work supporting three men, Glenn (pictured with Patrick), Darryl and Chad. Through listening and engaging, Patrick gradually discovered each individual's interests and strengths, and created natural opportunities for inclusion with their local communities. Is there a Patrick in your life? Find out more about how to make a nomination at www.dswa.org.au Nominations close on February 4. 04.01.2022 Message from Department of Communities Director General Michelle Andrews: I am shocked and disappointed at the laying of criminal charges against a senior me...mber of my executive team. I have been the Director General of the Department of Communities for just over six months and have found the Department of more than 6,000 outstanding employees to be dedicated and committed professionals who help some of the most vulnerable people in our community. To the people of Western Australia, I am sure you must be asking how this could have happened. I too am asking the same question. Clearly, further work needs to be done by all of us to build a Department with a stronger culture built on integrity, honesty and service delivery and to regain public trust and confidence. I contacted the Public Sector Commissioner requesting an independent review looking at matters of integrity with the Department of Communities to identify areas of improvement. I have also taken immediate steps to appoint an interim Assistant Director General from outside of Western Australia. For those people within the community we serve, I would like to reassure you, this will not impact our service delivery. All Western Australians should expect that myself and my leadership team will take every step, to stop corrupt and improper practices.

02.01.2022 For young people with autism, university can be a daunting place - a new environment, new social interactions and new experiences. At most universities, student...s with autism are more likely to drop out than their non-autistic counterparts. But a program at a Perth university provides vital mentoring and support to students on the autism spectrum. See more
