All of the muscles and fascia involved with flexing the hip, extending the knee and dorsiflexing the ankle (the superficial front line of the body) will need to lengthen for you to get into these positions, and you may feel res...trictions anywhere along this particular line. For the best results simply tune in to where you experience the tightest restriction, and then find a variation that best targets that specific area. 21.01.2022 In Chinese Medicine it is understood that where there is stagnation, there is likely to be pain. Traditionally, cupping therapy aims to clear blockages in the energetic meridians to restore the free flow of chi, blood and other vital fluids within the body, bringing fresh nutrients and oxygen to the area, and increasing lymphatic drainage to help with the removal of accumulated waste. When it comes bodywork, yoga, stretching or any other movement practice, I feel both of these paths are incredibly useful in helping us to identify, experience and ultimately release the fixated patterns and habitual tension we all tend to carry. Repetitive pulsating, rocking, spiralling and wave like organic movements certainly provide us with many benefits, and so too does the direct and precise techniques we find in alignment based practices. Perhaps the path we should choose is simply the one less travelled. Gently step our toes outside of our comfort zone, or take a running jump over the edge. 11.01.2022 I absolutely love this back bend variation to explore thoracic extension and any restrictions felt through the front of the upper body. In essence this is a partial pose, a small fragment of a thoracic bridge in gymnastics or the wheel pose in yoga, that doesn’t have the shoulder flexion or hip extension requirements of the full pose. And by keeping the hips flexed we can maintain a neutral lumbar spine and more effectively focus on extending through the thoracic spine.... I’m bending over a purpose built stretching prop with two different sized curves to bend over. But, anything with a similar shape will work. A soft object to bend over will simply deform under your weight, so it’s preferable to use something that is rigid enough to ensure your body needs to bend around it, yet soft enough to maintain a level of comfort. Take your time with this one, moving slowly into the stretch on each exhale and only as your body softens and allows. No force is required. Follow it up with some form of a forward bend as a counter pose.
