25.01.2022 Happy Friday everyone! What has been your teaching/musical highlight this week? I was super lucky, had a chat with my students mum today... she is amazing... shes even started to learn the violin so she can help her son practice. What a support!!

25.01.2022 Dont you just love it when youre in a charity shop and you find a gem!!! Anyone who knows me knows that I have a LOVE of books and a LOVE of games! I love all these old traditional games and source inspiration from them for teaching the violin! Ill pop on at some point and will show you how cute this book is... Do you have a traditional book which you love or find inspiration from?

24.01.2022 So a week or so I ago I shared with you all a poster of what happens if you over tighten your bow. This is a poster to show how to tighten the bow.

23.01.2022 When I teach the violin to children and their parents cant be present, I usually send the parents a video summary of what we covered so they can see and practice it at home... What you see here is my 5 year old student spontaneously using my puppet to try and eat my thumb. What I loved is that we learned through play!! Earlier in the lesson we were practicing beautiful left hand alignment and I joked that my puppet would eat her thumb if her thumb started squeezing or start...ed to come up too high and reach over. All of a sudden she started to concentrate on her alignment... Yay What do you do for a beautiful aligned left thumb?

23.01.2022 A quick attention grabber for your excited violin students who need to stop playing and re focus... do you do anything similar?

23.01.2022 Hopefully this doesnt happen to you, but if my students go to pick up their Stringosaurus violin by the strings, I remind them by saying this! They soon remember... Feel free to use this and just change Stringo to violin...

22.01.2022 Monday wins! What are yours? One of my little students explained to me that shes not ready for our string ensemble yet as playing with others makes her feel scared and worried despite having done it many a time. We came up with a plan to leave string ensemble for this year, work on her confidence and wait until next year to join. I said that I wouldnt expect to see her today and not to worry at all, but if she did have a change of heart, she would be so welcome to still com...e and play with us! Then at lunchtime today, she comes to the music room to ensemble out of the blue. I asked her if anyone had forced her to come and she said no, that she had decided to give it a go herself. Felt so proud of her! What a massive hurdle to overcome. Its all so much about the positive relationships we are building with our students and creating a space where students want to be.

21.01.2022 Today I was visiting my daughters year 2 class at school! It was so magical being the special guest... for some of the children it was their first experience of a violin, seeing, hearing and even trying one! So amazing. At what age were you when you saw, touched and heard a violin?

20.01.2022 Love these bow hold drawings! Which one is your bow hold most like?

19.01.2022 If you can read music... Give me one word to show me how this makes you feel?

18.01.2022 So a 5 year old student announced today that when she grows up, she will marry Stringosaurus... So a 5 year old student announced today that when she grows up, she will marry Stringosaurus...

17.01.2022 Seriously no touching

17.01.2022 Love this sentiment Pizzicato.

17.01.2022 My daughter came home from school buzzing with excitement today... she said that she has the perfect quote to share with my violin students, one that uses the words talent and hard work... so here it is... Hard work beats talent when talent doesnt work hard. Think shes onto something!

16.01.2022 I love these childrens responses to the question... How would you like your audience to feel when you play for them? We then brainstormed how we would achieve this! ... Emotional, not angry is hilarious! out of 6 year old mouths!

16.01.2022 So bless my daughter, when I went into her class last week, to do a Stringosaurus music workshop, I gave Eva the task of handing out violins to her classmates... Eva accidentally tripped in her enthusiasm and out flew the bridge... So I used this moment to reassure Eva that this accident was indeed an opportunity to learn all about the purpose of the bridge and the pegs and to engage with the 30 children all watching the workshop...... Nothing like thinking on the spot!

16.01.2022 Wow! Such huge and exciting developments in instrument making! Take a look...

15.01.2022 I certainly need music!!

15.01.2022 This is one of my favourite posts since I started this page. I look back to when I first started learning the violin, back when I was 8 and feel proud of the journey Ive been on. After all, thats what learning an instrument is, a very long journey!

15.01.2022 Procrastinating isnt always that bad is it?!

14.01.2022 For those of us lucky enough to have good eyesight, we may become reliant on looking at what we are doing or staring at the notes, even when we know them from memory... This is a great exercise to try if the child feels safe... never force a child to close their eyes as they may not feel comfortable for various reasons. They may also want the option to sit down. If the child does want to try this, they can start to become more aware of their sound, their intonation, the relat...ionship between their fingers and how each part of their body feels before they play, whilst they’re playing and after they stop playing. I would love to know if this is useful? :)

14.01.2022 So a lovely violin teacher from across the seas mentioned to me that it really irritates her when her students call the hair on the bow, strings. Heres my attempt at a poster to help our students avoid confusion...

09.01.2022 My children love being chosen to hand out our mini bows or actual bows... they love having responsibilities! I love the quote... With privilege comes responsibility.

09.01.2022 Just in case you needed a smile today...

08.01.2022 So excited to share with you all this little song which helps children develop the starting point of getting the bowing arm working... Stringosaurus has got a message!! I wonder who its for?... Inspired by Lydia Collins.

07.01.2022 Love people with a sense of humour...

07.01.2022 Improvisation... is this something you teach from the start? What are the first steps for beginners?Improvisation... is this something you teach from the start? What are the first steps for beginners?

07.01.2022 Vale Sheila M Nelson... such a loss to the string teaching world...Yet her legacy lives on in the vast amount of repertoire she’s left the world and in the people she’s taught and inspired and in the opportunities she’s created for string players...

07.01.2022 Thank you Stephanie from Music for Kiddos for sharing your music with the world... This song is perfect for any little ones in a general music setting, music therapy setting or just for classroom music teachers looking to grab the attention of the class. Ive taken it for beginner violins to practice starting and stopping, keeping to the beat and for good ensemble playing from the start. ... Hope this is fun and useful!

06.01.2022 Thanks Rebecca Jane Flanagan, Storyteller - Musical Experiences For Children for sharing this message!

05.01.2022 I wrote yesterday about Martial Arts in a post below and then I realised that the wonderful Arbroath High Cluster Strings had also written a post almost simultaneously with similar thoughts... The saying is... a black belt is a white belt who never quit. Its time we chat with our children and explain how everyone was a beginner once. ... Just dont ever give up.

04.01.2022 Im excited to show you all a fun new movement and attention grabbing song that I use with my beginner violinists! Its an amazing tool to practice starting and stopping and keeping the beat. Watch this space...

04.01.2022 Today I noticed that one or two of my students were starting to use a squeezing and tense action to stop the string... heres part of the story/analogy that I used to help them understand the correct action... Welcome to the pouncing method! Ha ha ha

03.01.2022 My box of toys is used to inspire children to learn through play... I keep mainly the same toys in it, although each week I may change the odd one. The cloth adds suspense and stops the children from getting distracted. Guess what I use Gorilla for?

02.01.2022 Stringosaurus and I visited Iona Presentation Primary School today to celebrate the Nativity story with the beautiful, inquisitive and joyful Kindys and their amazing teacher. Oh my, what fun we had! The children loved strumming their violins to create the angel music and we sang and danced to our heart’s content. What a beautiful way to spend a morning.

02.01.2022 Why is it so hard to smile and play the violin at the same time? Why is it so hard to smile and play the violin at the same time?

02.01.2022 There is nothing quite like having new stationery! Im getting super organised and super busy... anyone relate with this exciting feeling?!

01.01.2022 I love it when my students tell me they wish they could have violin lessons everyday... it makes my heart sing! I wish I could teach them everyday too. 01.01.2022 I just love this soothing finger play... these kind of beautiful finger plays are amazing for parents and children to bond and are so important to build a strong musical foundation.

01.01.2022 What are your thoughts? :)
