24.01.2022 On the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month one hundred and two years ago the guns of the Great War, the war to end all wars, fell silent. It’s the moment we should all take a minute to remember those that made sacrifices and especially the ones that paid the ultimate price. After the war, communities around the country found it fitting to pay tribute by way of memorials. In Stroud in 1926 after much debate, it was decided to build a memorial that had some practical u...se also. The outcome was our glorious grandstand at the Stroud Showgrounds. The historical society encourages you, the next time you find yourself sitting in the grandstand watching your favourite sporting team or show event, to give some thought to those brave men and women that served in WW1 and the sacrifices they made, so that we can enjoy the freedoms that we have today. LEST WE FORGET

22.01.2022 Hi all, sometime ago I shared some old photos to this group. I am a volunteer at West Wallsend Museum and many years ago we were given some photos. We have sca...nned them all and hope to give the originals to your local Historical Society. I will post some here now for the local families named on the back of some pics. Bowden is a predominate name in many pics. If someone from the society would like to pm me I'm happy to copy the photos to a USB until we can travel to deliver said photos. In the meantime I'll post some photos for you all. It might give some joy during these trying times. Enjoy. See more

22.01.2022 Please note a change of Museum Opening times tomorrow Sunday 6th September. Due to a shortage of volunteers we will not be opening Quambi Schoolhouse from 1 -3pm. Only the Courthouse will be open between 11am - 1pm. Our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may cause. Our next full opening will be Sunday 20th September.

22.01.2022 This weekend was to be Stroud’s 60th Anniversary of the Brick Throwing Event but because of Covid-19 this had to be cancelled when the virus became pandemic earlier in the year. In order to not let the Event go totally unnoticed, over the next few days the HisSoc will be going down memory lane and posting photos from the past 6 decades. As our photos may be limited we invite you to join in and post any memories or photos you have yourselves or have inherited from your fa...milies. Today is about How it all Started in 1961 and photos from that decade. The HisSoc respectfully acknowledge there will be images and notations of people who are no longer with us and thank everyone past and present for all the great effort put into all the processions. Stroud, Australia should be proud of their engagement in this great Annual Event as we are literally the ‘last one standing’. Stroud Canada bowed out of contest many years ago and more recently the USA and England have done the same. Viva Stroud Australia! We look forward to an even greater event in 2021. See more

21.01.2022 Thomas James first posted on Stroud Local Fb page. As there has been an incredible amount of interest, I have moved it over to the HisSoc page. Previous replies will have to be read on Stroud Local. Looking for help... Can anyone please give me any information regarding Sedgwick Todd Crick?... He is resting in Stroud cemetery. All information will be confidential if needed. Please, I need answers. Many thanks in advance Thomas See more

17.01.2022 LEST WE FORGET A representative of Stroud and District Historical Society laid wreaths at the Stroud Cenotaph and Stroud Memorial Grandstand at Stroud Showground this morning.

17.01.2022 Brickthrowing Event Memories. A final display of photos extracted from the 2011, 2014 and 2018 street events which brings us to the end of travelling down Memory Lane for now but hope you have enjoyed the trip! So much fun, talent and creativity has been displayed through the photos and it is a wonderful legacy for future generations to look back upon. If you still find some more articles or photos to share, please do. Well done and thank you Stroud Australia for your ongoing participation.

12.01.2022 50 TODAY! Stroud & District Historical Society members gathered on Silo Hill recently for an early celebration of the society's 50th birthday. Two founding members and former presidents, John Chadban and Allan Gorton, joined current president Rodney Gorton in recognising the foresight of the 28 men and women who gathered in the Stroud Shire Council Chambers on June 30, 1970 and voted unanimously to form a society to "preserve, for posterity, the priceless heritage of the past." Inaugural office holders were Harold Bowen (president), Olga and Don Williams (joint secretaries); J Goodwin (treasurer) and John Chadban and Clyde.L. Hollingsworth (vice presidents). It was their vision, commitment and sheer hard work that ensured this heritage is central to the vibrant village life of Stroud today.

11.01.2022 Sports carnival at Stroud in the 1950s, when my mother was at school there. Photo from her collection.

08.01.2022 Brickthrowing Event Memories 2000-2010. Into the 21st Century, the noughties! Plenty of ‘articles’ for you to read but not many photos in our album for the first 9 years so will also include 2010 into today’s album. Also featuring a wonderful ‘reflection’ from our late Life Member, Beryl Bowden with her 50th Brickthrowing Anniversary Looking Back on the Brick ‘n Pin story extracted from her book "Growing up in Stroud. What a wonderful legacy Beryl's book has left us.

08.01.2022 Brickthrowing Event Memories. As we move into the 1970’s decade here are a few more photos from our record archives. Reading some of the captions, it would appear some things are still as ‘topical’ today in 2020 as they were back then! Enjoy!

06.01.2022 Next Wednesday evening 9 September from 6pm-7pm local history enthusiasts can be entertained with dark stories from the MidCoast’s past, uncovered by Janine and... Penny from MidCoast Stories. All you need is a computer and internet. There’ll be stories of murders, poisonings and injustices of the past that happened right under your feet. This event is organised by our MidCoast Libraries team and you can book your spot by clicking this link: https://bit.ly/3lKd23E Have a great weekend everyone! See more

06.01.2022 Brickthrowing Event Memories. Despite still attracting record crowds and winning several trophies in the 1990’s, including having a 1994 International record from local team member Amanda Glavenlock, the HisSoc seemed to have run out of puff in the photograph department! Here’s hoping some of our readers will have a few memories or photos to share! As we come to the end of an incredible century, let’s see what the ‘noughties’ has in store in a couple of days!

05.01.2022 Our museums at Stroud Court House and Quambi will be reopening for 2021 from Sunday 31st January, between 11am - 3pm and fortnightly thereafter. Please check this page for any changes to these dates prior to travelling. We look forward to welcoming visitors during the year.

05.01.2022 Brickthrowing Event Memories. What a busy decade the 1980’s was! Winners were certainly grinners for our local Stroud competitors who picked up many of the Trophies! The floats and crowds excelled as we also celebrated Australia’s Bi-Centenary. The decade concluded with the Contest having to move lock, stock and barrel up to the main town area because several days of heavy rain had made the Showground unsuitable for the Event. A few familiar faces emerging from the crowds these days!

01.01.2022 Today is our last museum opening of the year. The courthouse is open until 2pm today as we are unable to open Quambi. If you need any books or tea towels as stocking fillers please call in today. For the rest of the week some items will still be available at our two retail outlets Crafty Friends and Stroud Hardware. We will be reopening later in January. A happy Xmas to all our followers.
