07.01.2022 Halls Gap in central Victoria is a lovely placed to visit and it’s just a hop, skip and jump from an area where some of my ancestors settled. Burnt Creek, Wonwondah and Bungalally are not widely known to outsiders but they are towns just outside of Horsham. Taking myself and my daughter for a journey to Halls Gap for a weekend away I made sure there was some Genie time too. First we wandered around the tucked away Green Lakes Cemetery, blink and you will miss the turn off.... Some desolate unloved graves but also a number of recent additions I was glad I picked an overcast day as the grass is quite long around the graves. Alas, my three residents are in unmarked graves but I did find some connections to my direct line. From there we drove down to Green Lakes itself which was lovely and full. My Great Great Grandfather had land behind the Green lake so I journeyed down and took a number of photos of the general area. I wondered how German Settlers found the landscape, overlooked as it is with the Grampians. This area was to prove a stopover for my ancestors as they had originally settled in Lyndoch Valley in the Barossa in South Australia. They spent some years in the Horsham area and then moved in different areas, my Great Great Grandparents spending the rest of their lives in the Wagga area. I highly recommend planning some Genie journeys. Not only are you visiting the places of your ancestors but you are helping small towns after the Covid lockdowns. Hmm where to next?
