20.01.2022 Resilience. We hear this word thrown around a lot in paramedicine but what does it mean? AJP recently explored underlying resilience of paramedics and dispatchers, as well as their coping strategies. The authors found five important factors to enhance resilence are: ... 1) Work/life balance 2) Self-acceptance 3) Trusted social support 4) Meaningful work 5) Physical self-care Oppositely, they identified avoidance, distancing and confrontational coping as negative stress coping strategies. It is vital that student paramedics can positively manage their mental health to set them up for a fulfilling lifelong career! What are your go-to stress-relief strategies? Talk with your mates and colleagues about how they cope and open up the conversation around dealing with stress. They create meaningful connections and support those struggling with their mental health. Paramedics are among one of the professions with the highest suicide rates. In Victoria alone, the average annual suicide rate for paramedics is 35.6 per 100,000 workers more than three and a half times higher than police, firefighters..., and other emergency workers. 17.01.2022 Meet the team! This is Liam Bruton. Liam studies at Western Sydney University (@westernsydneyu) and is currently in year 2 of the Bachelor of Paramedicine degree. Liam holds the co-chair role for the student paramedic committee. Liams role is to oversee and help manage the student committee.... Liam’s goal for the next 12 months is to improve representation for paramedicine students through a dedicated body that can work in the students’ interest to develop the learning process and transition to practice. Liam states by increasing Australasian students’ involvement in the college, a new community of practice will be created with events and initiatives focussed at new practitioners.

15.01.2022 Meet the team! This is Tahlia Harper. Tahlia is in her first year of Paramedicine at Victoria University (Melbourne). Tahlia is the regional representative for Victoria and Tasmania and the ACP Mental Health SIG student representative. She is also helping to produce the student podcast, beginning in October.... Tahlia's role is to engage with Victorian and Tasmanian students and promote wellbeing and mental health across the board. Tahlia's goal for the year is to improve support for students in their education through resources, events, communication and adovcacy!

14.01.2022 As we approach the end of semester, we invite our guest speaker Dr Sandy MacQuarrie to discuss the physical, physiological, and mental dimensions of student health and performance. Sandy is a registered paramedic with 25 years of experience and has recently completed a PhD on paramedic wellbeing. What do the first few years on-road look like? How do I recognise and prevent burnout? How do I keep a cool head for my OSCE? We’ll answer these questions and more in this month’s episode.

13.01.2022 Meet the team! This is Sherlyn Hii. Sherlyn studies at ACU Ballarat Campus (VIC) (@acuimages) and is currently in year 2 of the conjoined Bachelor of Nursing and Paramedicine degree. Sherlyn is the regional coordinator for the ACP Student Committee and is an episodic producer for ACP’s student paramedic podcast. ... Sherlyn works closely with the regional representatives around Australia and New Zealand to ensure fair and equal representation of our entire student body. Sherlyn’s role entails ensuring that students have a strong and proud voice within the professional discourse. Sherlyn’s goal for the next 12 months is to see closer partnerships between the ACP and university societies. Working closely with these societies will provide a richer source of extracurricular activities for paramedic students.

We provide insight on the response from student paramedics during this time, with many assisting across various services. Given the sudden demand for skilled health professionals, we explore how recent events have shaped the perception of what students can do and what this means for students as future health professionals. 05.01.2022 It’s the time of year where student paramedics start applying for Ambulance Services across Australia and New Zealand. AJP recently released a research article and stated "final year paramedic student enrolments have risen to 2692... representing a 274% increase over the previous 5 years. The article also stated "Valuable extracurricular opportunities exist for undergraduate paramedic students to further develop the attributes and capabilites necessary for becoming more c...ompetitive in gaining graduate employment in Australian ambulance services". The authors state key attributes employers look for include "communication, teamwork, aptitude for problem solving, planning, and organisation, and commitment to clinical proficiency".
