21.01.2022 So excited to be moving in to a new studio! Who can guess where it is?

19.01.2022 A different kind of before and after photo This is a portrait of luthier Jim Matheas in his workshop. We've all seen the glamour portrait before/after where there is a change in hair, makeup, outfit, pose, expression etc. However, these two photos were shot from the same angle of the same room with the same subject in both. The first was shot on my iPhone as a reference for my composition.... To create the final image I first decided that I wanted Jim standing rather than seated and then decided where he should stand. I placed him slightly off centre to give the image a dynamic balance. I also asked him to put on his apron, partly to give context, but also because the blue apron is a complimentary colour to the orange wood and it would make him stand out. The next step was to arrange the workshop, moving items into or out of view. The last part of the set up was to light the workshop and Jim. In the final, most important step, I encouraged Jim to connect with what what his work means for him. This portrait shows his competence, experience, and professionalism. Although it seems very natural, everything in the final image was very carefully controlled and deliberate. #brandphotography #businessportraits #personalmarketing #photography #personalbranding

16.01.2022 Dear friends, In the world of social media, we are bombarded with so much. It can be difficult to keep track of what is going on and near impossible to notice when things are absent. The last couple of years have been a great challenge. My mother’s health had taken a steep decline and I had to devote a lot of my time, energy and attention to taking care of her. Thankfully she has since made a complete recovery and is now better than she has been in many years. This has been a... great relief for me and my family and so I now have the opportunity to put my energy into my work. Last year, I made a big decision. As much as I have loved photographing all different people, I have turned the focus (pun intended, I am a dad after all) of my photography business to doing commercial work, specifically helping businesses engage and connect with their clients through photography and video. As I am still operating under the same business name I will be using this same Facebook page, but there will be a change in the things that I post. I will keep many of the posts on this page including the 30 Days of Beautiful project since I am still happy to share this work and because I know that many of you have shared these posts. I know that this may disappoint some people and delight others.... but I hope that you are still interested in following my work. However, if you should decide not to then I understand. And of course, I am still here if you just want to reach out and say hello. Cheers, Michael

04.01.2022 Creating a Renaissance painting style portrait. This is a portrait of Australia's most renowned lute virtuoso, Rosemary Hodgson in her studio. After I decided on my composition I took a quick photo with my iPhone as a reference as I always do with my environmental portraits.... The first step was to arrange the elements in the room to show what she does and to feel balanced, removing distractions and moving everything to where they worked best with the overall composition. I asked her to bring out some of her instruments that we arranged beside her and on the couch behind. Then I lit the scene using Rembrandt lighting on Rosemary, highlights on the instruments and additional lights for the rest of the scene. There is also the mirrored pose of Rosemary and her lute with the madonna and child on the wall behind her and also of the statue on the mantlepiece.
