22.01.2022 SOFTBALL FALCONS GAIN SPACE AT TOP By Robert Laidlaw IN A TIGHT CONTEST at West Beach Parks, Sturt has moved a couple of games clear at the top of the Premier L...eague softball ladder with an exciting 2-1 victory over second-placed Port Adelaide on Wednesday night. Although restricted to just three hits, the Falcons took advantage of an error and walks, scoring their first run in the second inning when Maddie Cameron walked, advanced on Millie Fidge’s hit and came home on an error, while in the third, three walks and a hit by pitch scored another for a 2-0 lead. The Magpies pushed hard in the fourth, after hits to Jess Neves, Charlize Callaghan and Kara Tilton but only scored one run. Then in the fifth and final dig, Ella Forrester led off with a hit for Port and pinch-hitter Emily Cattuzzo doubled, but after a runner was out in a run-down play, the next two batter were retired without adding to the score. Zali Adams was the winning pitcher, conceding six hits for six strikeouts, while Johanna Grauer took the loss, giving up three hits for six K2s both went the distance. A LAST-GASP RALLY has helped West Torrens to a 3-0 victory over Hills, putting the Eagles back into the hunt for a top four berth. With both pitchers in form, Steph Trzcinski for West Torrens and the Heat’s Georgia Hood, the game was scoreless until the top of the fifth and final inning. After the first out at the top of the fifth, Sophie Hoyle singled, Jacqui Beal walked, a passed ball advanced the runners, with Jordan Harris batting in the first run when she reached on an error, and, after another walk and the second out, Karah Schultz made the game safe with a two-run hit up the middle. Trzcinski conceded three hits in five innings for 12 strikeouts, while Hood also went the distance, giving up four hits for five K2s. ANOTHER CLOSE GAME saw Walkerville manage to battle its way to an important 3-0 victory over Seacombe. The Cats set up their win with a run at the bottom of the first inning, when Chelsea Robinson hit a lead-off triple and scored on Hayley Bonython’s groundout. That scoreline remained intact until the bottom of the fifth, where Walkerville padded out the margin with another pair of runs, after Ashley Luppino doubled, Karyn Dale had a safe bunt, Jenny Gray sacrificed, an error and Bonython’s RBI single. Sally Colquist pitched seven innings for six hits and four strikeouts for the win, while Jade Peterson went six frames for four hits and two K2s. * * * * * RESULTS West Torrens d Hills 3-0 (hits: WT Kaesler, Pickard, Schultz, Hoyle; Hills G. 18.01.2022 SOFTBALL TRZCINSKI BACK EAGLES BACK By Robert Laidlaw WHAT A DIFFERENCE! With Steph Trzcinski back in the circle for West Torrens in Wednesday night’s Premier... League softball, the Eagles looked a different team in beating Seacombe 10-0. Although playing and dominating with the bat, Trzcinski has been restricted because of injury issues and pitched for the first time this season. And boy did she revel in the outing! After conceded a hit to lead-off Tiger Jenny Dunn and after second batter Sasha Penglase bunted, Trzcinski struck out the next seven hitters, through to two-out in the third frame, when Dunn came up and singled to end the sequence. In her three innings of work, Trzcinski conceded just those two hits for seven K2s and no walks, in a good sign for West Torrens but a warning for the rest of the competition beware of the Eagles. Still, Torrens needed to do the job with the bat to win the game, and it did, scoring in all four frames. Lead off hits to Jordan Harris, Lana Kaesler and Faith Pickard saw Eagles score twice in the opening dig, then in the second, Jacqui Beal had a safe bunt, Harris singled, then two walks and an error later, another three runs and a 5-0 advantage. In the third, Harris hit a two-run double and scored on Kaesler’s two-bagger 8-0. The fourth and final inning saw hits to Steph Trzcinski and Carly Allen, and two errors, for two further tallies before time was called. PORT ADELAIDE RODE a no-hitter by Joanna Grauer to beat Walkerville 4-1 Grauer struck out 12 batters to complement her masterpiece. Single runs in the second and third frames, after RBI hits to Tash Strapps and Jess Neves put the Magpies 2-0 up, with the advantage doubled in the fourth on Ella Forrester’s two-run double. A couple of walks and an infield out saw the Cats managed to claw a run in the sixth and final inning, but it was too little and too late. The win has propelled Port up to second spot on the ladder and was a good demonstration of how well the Magpies can play when they are at the top of their game. STURT RODE A BIT of luck to beat Hills 4-3 and remain well clear at the top of the standings. It was a topsy turvy game, with Sturt hitting the front for the first time in the final inning and hanging on. In the bottom of the first dig, Amber Hood walked, went to second base on Madi Rocher’s four-to-three and scooted all the way home on Georgia Hood’s long fly to rightfield 1-0 Heat. The Falcons soon responded, when at the top of the second, Bel White walked and eventually scored on Lauren Jury’s sac fly, to level the ballgame. But a couple of errors gifted Hills a second run in the bottom of the second. After a scoreless third, Sturt again tied up proceedings in the fourth frame, when Maddie Cameron tripled and scored on an error, to make it 2-2. Adding to the drama, Hills came right back again in the bottom of the fourth to again hit the front, when Kenzie Ween doubled, went to third on Abi Jorgensen’s bunt and came home on Amber Hood’s grounder 3-2 the Heat. At the top of the fifth and final inning, Sturt managed two runs to take the lead for the first time. Jorydn Lee walked, Jessie Keech bunted, Ada Caruana walked, Indigo Beck de Silva bunted, Sarah Tonkin had a RBI single and an error scored the go-ahead tally. Still, Heat had a chance to snatch at least a draw in the bottom of the fifth, but after Peyton Daniels walked, the next three hitters saw three outs and the game finished in the Falcons’ favour. Both Zali Adams and Georgia Hood withstood the pressure to pitch solid games to keep their respective sides in the contest until the very end. * * * * * RESULTS Premier League softball results: Port Adelaide d Walkerville 4-1 (hits: Port Tilton 2, Neves, Chillingworth, Strapps, Forrester; Walkerville none. 13.01.2022 - SOFTBALL HARRIS WALK-OFF By Robert Laidlaw A BATTLING WEST TORRENS claimed a huge scalp in beating top team Sturt 7-6 at West Beach Parks in Premier League s...oftball, when Jordan Harris hit a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the fifth and final inning. The Falcons made most of the early running and seemed to hold all the cards, but a tenacious West Torrens wouldn’t surrender. At the top of the first frame Sturt scored a run through Ada Caruana, who singled and eventually came home on Millie Fidge’s sac fly. In the bottom of the first, the Eagles managed to go 2-1 up, on a RBI hit to Karah Schultz and a RBI grounder from Steph Trzcinski. It seemed the Falcons then took control in the second dig with four runs, on Rachel Tonkin’s sac fly, a Sarah Tonkin two-run double and Maddie Cameron’s run-scoring two-bagger. Trailing 5-2, the Eagles managed to draw level with thee tallies at the bottom of the third, after three consecutive one-out singles to Trzcinski, Sophie Hoyle and Kelsey Knuckey all scored, two on wild pitches. Sturt had been playing good softball and was composed, going a run up in the fourth, when Jessie Keech singled, Caruana bunted and Sarah Tonkin hit a sac fly. At the top of the fifth, still leading by a run, the Falcons got their first two runners aboard, which saw Jacqui Beal come into the circle for West Torrens and she managed to quell the danger with three outs. With one out in the bottom of the fifth and final inning, Knuckey and Carly Allen singled, and Beal advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, to set up Harris’ heroics, as she lined the first pitch to rightfield to score the tying and winning runs. IN A TIGHT BATTLE, Hills and Walkerville had to settle for a 1-1 draw, with the Cats waiting until the final inning with two out. It was a battle from the middle, as pitchers Georgia Hood from Heat and Walkerville’s Sally Colquist would not give an inch and battled hard all game for their sides. Hills scored first, at the top of the fourth dig, when Dani Perez hit a safe infield grounder, advanced to third base on an error and scored when McKenzie Ween singled up the middle. The Cats left it to the last minute, scoring their run in the bottom of the sixth and final frame, when, with two out, Karyn Dale was hit by a pitch, stole second base and came home on Sophie King’s hit up the middle to score the equaliser. Colquist surrendered five hits in six frames for one strikeout, while Hood only gave up that one hit, while collecting eighth K2s. BEHIND ANOTHER SUPERB pitching performance by Johanna Grauer, Port Adelaide beat Seacombe 5-0, to gain some beating space in second spot on the ladder. Grauer pitched five shut-out frames, conceding just one hit, while striking out eight batters. Most of the damage with the bat for the Magpies came in the second inning when they scored four times, after hits to Taylor Chillingworth, Charlize Callaghan, Kara Tilton, Ella Forrester and Gemma Letton. In the final dig, a big double by Grauer set up Port’s final score, as the Magpies seem to be on a bit of a roll. * * * * * RESULTS West Torrens d Sturt 7-6 (hits: WT Knuckey 2, Lambert, Kaesler, Schultz, Trzcinski, Hoyle, Allen; Sturt Caruana 2, Cameron 2, S. 06.01.2022 SOFTBALL FALCONS WELL CLEAR By Robert Laidlaw WITH A CONVINCING 8-1 victory over Port Adelaide in a one v two top-of-the-table clash in Premier League softball ...at West Beach, Sturt has opened up a huge lead at the head of the premiership list. Right from the get-go the Falcons dominated, scoring two runs in the first inning on Maddie Cameron’s two-out, two-run hit. Sturt added another run in the second on Ada Caruana’s RBI triple, then went 5-0 up in the third when Bel White smashed a long ball over the leftfield fence with one aboard. The Magpies threatened at the bottom of the fourth, when Johanna Grauer was hit by a pitch, and after an out, Charlize Callaghan singled and Kara Tilton walked to load the bases. Tash Strapps’ long fly ball scored one run, then Ella Forrester’s smash down the third base line was caught by Sturt’s Jesse Keech to quell the threat. With time running out, the Falcons put the result to bed with a three-run sixth, Caruana hitting a RBI single and White a two-run double. In the bottom of the sixth, Taylor Chillingworth hit a one-out triple for Port but was left stranded. Zali Adams pitched four innings for three hits and one K2 for Sturt, with reliever Millie Fidge conceding just one hit for three strikeouts in two frames. The Magpies Johanna Grauer wasn’t as effective from the circle, giving up nine hits for eight K2s. Caruana batted 1000 with three hits and a walk, scored twice, batted two runs in and made a nice 9-3 throw out in the opening dig. White also collected three hits, batting four runs in. WITH TARNI STEPTO MAKING a guest appearance, Hills managed to overrun West Torrens to win 7-4. Stepto, an Australian softball representative, is from NSW and came over for NAIDOC week. She started at first base before pitching the second half of the game where she dominated, and also batted 1000 with two hits and a walk. The game was tight early, as the Heat scored three runs in the opening frame, with two runs scoring on Stepto’s first hit and another came in on Dani Perez’s hard shot to short stop. West Torrens fought back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, when Lana Kaesler tripled, Karah Schultz had a RBI single and Sophie Hoyle’s high infield fly fell ‘innocently’, which scored the second run. Walks cost the Eagles in the second frame, when, after an out and Madi Rocher’s hit and two base on balls, Alex Mackay plated one run with a single, while a loaded bases walk to Perez made the scoreline 5-2. But Jacqui Beal led off West Torrens’ second dig with a double and Jordan Harris laid down a perfect bunt. A run scored on Kaesler’s groundout, with another coming in on an error to make it a one-run game. Stepto came on to pitch in the third inning, and after retiring the first batter she faced, surrendered a sharp single up the middle to the Eagles’ Kelsey Knuckey. She then struck out the next two hitters, and in the final dig had a one-two-three frame, collecting another pair of K2s. A pair of runs by Hills in the final inning gave the Heat some breathing space, with Peyton Daniel hitting a RBI triple and scored on Perez’s single. IT TOOK A WHILE but Walkerville pulled away late to beat Seacombe 5-1 in a tight contest. After neither side scored in the first two frames, the Cats managed to inch ahead at the top of the third, when Chelsea Robinson singled, stole second base, went to third on a wild pitch and came home on Sophie King’s sac fly. But the Tigers were equal to the challenge and came back to tie in the bottom of the third, when Sophie Kinnear singled and came home on Jenny Dunn’s triple. Another scoreless frame in the fourth had supporters from both sides on the edge of their seats. Then in the fifth, Walkerville made its winning move with a pair of runs, when Robinson tripled, Hayley Bonython hit a RBI single and an error gave the Cats their second run. Finally at the top of the seventh Walkerville could relax a little, after scoring another two runs, when Karyn Dale had a two-run double. Although conceding 10 hits, Riley Moore did not walk a batter in claiming the win, while for Seacombe, Jade Peterson pitched six frames for seven hits and five strikeouts. * * * * * RESULTS Sturt d Port Adelaide 8-1 (hits: Sturt Caruana 3, White 3 (hr), S. Tonkin, Cameron, J. Keech; Port Callaghan 2, Chillingworth, Williams. WP: Z. Adams; LP: J. Grauer). Hills d West Torrens 7-4 (hits: Hills Rocher 2, Stepto 2, Mackay 2, Perez 2, G.
