17.01.2022 To be Healed by the Good Samaritan: Homily for the 8th Sunday of Luke in the Orthodox Church It is tempting to use religion to help us feel better about ourselves. Too often, we want to make God in our own image and let ourselves off the hook from anything that challenges us to do something different from what we want to do. It can be very appealing to try to use God for purposes other than the healing of our souls. That is the attitude that Jesus Christ rejected ...Continue reading

17.01.2022 Address on the Feast of Our Most Holy Lady 1 21 November 2020 Address on the Feast of Our Most Holy Lady the Mother of God, when she was taken by her Parents to the Temple All too often the remembrance of the righteous which is accompanied by encomia is an opportunity to censure the person praising if he falls short of expressing the worth of the person being praised- because the address is not always, nor in all circumstances, equivalent to reality. But how can I speak o...Continue reading

15.01.2022 The Judgment of God We meet three laws in this life. As soon as we appear in this world, even if our life is only one day, the first law we meet is the law of sin: ‘For who shall be pure from uncleanness? not even one; if even his life should be but one day upon the earth’ (Job 14:4-5). Then, we meet the law of death. Although there are many people who avoid thinking about death, this is the surest truth: our life will reach to an end. Thirdly, we meet the law of grace, which...Continue reading

14.01.2022 Venerable Mother Genevieve of Paris January 3 Saint Genevieve was born to noble and wealthy parents in Gaul (modern day France), near Paris in 422 AD. As was custom at the time, Genevieve would tend her father’s flock from a young age, keeping vigil and prayer at all times. When she was seven years old, Saint Germanus, Bishop of Auxerre, passed through her village and noticed her. He kissed her on the head and proclaimed to her parents that she would become great in the sight... of God, leading many to salvation. Genevieve expressed her wishes to consecrate her virginity to Christ and to take up monasticism, and so the Bishop blessed her and gave her a brass coin with an engraved Cross, telling her to wear no other jewellery around her neck or on her fingers and she obeyed. One time, Attila the Hun was approaching Paris to sack the city, however Genevieve prayed fervently and for no apparent reason, Attila and his army retreated and did not attack. At fifteen years of age, Genevieve entered the monastic life and excelled in prayer and virtue, receiving the gift of clairvoyance and wonderworking, a holy vessel as seen by the Parisians. Possibly the most famous story about Saint Genevieve is when one stormy night, she and her nuns were on their way to church when the wind blew out their candles. The Saint made the sign of the Cross over one of the candles and it was miraculously relit with a bright flame, allowing them to journey safely to the service. Saint Genevieve lived out her days in prayer, vigil, and fasting, living up to 89 years old when she reposed peacefully in the Lord. Troparion Tone I. The soldiers keeping watch. The Shepherds that kept watch once beheld Christ our Saviour, and thou, o Maid of God, as a shepherdess of pure heart didst worship the Great Shepherd of the true flock of the chosen lambs. Wherefore, guard us from the wolves that come in sheep’s clothing, and with love do thou lead us to Heavenly pastures, O most holy Genevieve.

10.01.2022 THE LIMITS OF BEING RICH - ON THE PARABLE IN LUKE 12: 16-21 Many believers wish that God would at some point in their lives speak to them if for no other reason than to know for sure that He existed. In Luke 12:16-21, we are presented the story of a man to whom God spoke directly. Unfortunately, God’s words to the man were You fool! It certainly would be a rude awakening for any of us believers if when God finally spoke to us, first words were to call us a fool! We might ...then wish that God had never spoken to us, for such a judgment by God would not be a welcomed word by us. If we examine our own lives and our own values, do we imagine that God’s first words to us would be one of praise for our lives and thinking, or would we be rebuked for our folly for basing our lives on shallow ideas, on goals that turn out to be phantoms which disappear in a second when we wake up to reality? The man’s folly was not that he had become rich, but he had not become rich towards God. Wealth and prosperity can be a blessing from the Lord, but they are given to us in order for us to accomplish His will, not to selfishly spend it on ourselves which also turns out to be folly. Being rich is not the same as being rich towards God. Blessing received from God are by God’s design meant to enable us to give not just to be thankful but to be generous as well. This Gospel lesson from Christ offers us one of the earliest glimpses into the notion of a bubble economy. For the rich man’s bubble was burst in that moment when he was told he was going to die that night. His wealth was shown to be a mere dream but not the reality upon which to base his life’s decisions. It was not even the case that his wealth was the result of ill-gotten goods he didn’t lie, cheat and steal to obtain his wealth, but worked for it. Yet in the eternal scale of things, his wealth was not all that valuable to that man. Blessings received might make us rich, but we have to receive those blessing and use them to make us rich towards God. ~ Fr Ted Bobosh

Please remember if one person needs to quarantine then all those who come into contact directly and indirectly will also need to quarantine. So please consider this before registering. You can call Church phone number 93877693 between 4pm to 6pm on weekdays or you can send a text to Messanger with your name, address and contact number. See more

06.01.2022 13th Sunday of Luke Of the Rich Young Man That which from a human perspective cannot happen,... God will make it happen The rich young man approaches the Lord and asks what he can do to inherit eternal life. The Lord answers him: You still lack one thing. [1] And this which you lack is to sell all your possessions and follow me. Deep down in his heart the uneasiness of the young man is that he feels he is lacking something, yet he is not aware of it. And since he is informed of what this thing is, he is in difficulty doing it. And this is what is called self sufficiency. He is deeply regretful not over the fact that he is unable to do that which the Lord asks of him, but that the Lord is asking him to take off something he had never thought of. The Lord says that it is nearly impossible for a rich man to be saved. In this way, we could say that the one thing each one has whatever this might be and which he guards since he is a captured by it and unable to let it go, is dangerous. The Lord, however, stresses: with men this is impossible, but for God all things are possible. And yet, this does not mean that because God is powerful He will, in the end, save the rich man or the man who passionately holds onto any weakness. Rather, it means that God will give man the ability to finally cast off that which is capturing him and leading to his downfall. And, in this manner, the miracle happens in man’s very own soul: God’s power is made perfect in man’s weakness. That which from a human perspective you think cannot happen, God will make it happen.

06.01.2022 The fear of God 15 November 2020 In the petition which we address to God, For this Holy House (which we heard about in the previous Homily), the following words are also said: and for those who enter it with faith, reverence, and fear of God, let us pray to the Lord. In other words, to pray for those who enter the holy Church with faith, reverence and fear of God. What does the Church mean by fear, which is connected with the faith and reverence of Christians who are e...Continue reading

04.01.2022 The Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10, 25-37) 15 November 2020 ‘Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus’. This ‘lawyer’ [i.e. a student of the Law of the Old Testament, rather than an advocate in a court] approached Jesus Christ, supposedly to ask what he should do to inherit eternal life, but in fact out of a desire to provoke Him. The lawyer was an educated man of his time who studied and interpreted the Law and it was his aim to trap Jesus into a discussion. Instead...Continue reading

03.01.2022 The Holy Apostle Philip The holy and renowned Apostle Philip came from Bethsaida in Galilee, that is the same town of which Saints Andrew and Peter were residents. He was distinguished for his depth of understanding and spent a great deal of time studying the books of the prophets in the Old Testament. He remained chaste throughout his life. The Lord found Philip in Galilee, after His baptism and urged him to follow Him. Philip lost no time; he immediately followed the Lord a...nd became His disciple. Not only that, but when he met his friend Nathaniel shortly afterwards, he said to him: We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. Of course we can find many other passages in inspired Scripture, that is the New Testament, which refer to the glorious Apostle Philip. When the divine apostles drew lots to see which of them would go where to preach the Gospel of salvation, the countries of Asia fell to Philip. In his preaching, Philip had the Apostle Bartholomew as has companion and colleague. He also had his sister Mariamni, who looked after them. So Philip and Bartholomew, along with his sister Mariamni preached the Gospel in the cities of Mysia and Lydia in Asia Minor. During his teaching efforts, he underwent many trials and tribulations at the hands of the idolaters. They scourged them, beat them with rods, imprisoned and stoned them. In Asia Minor, while they were preaching, they also found the Lord’s beloved disciple, John (the Theologian), who was also preaching the Gospel of salvation. At that time the wife of Nikanor the proconsul came to believe in Christ and for this reason, the proconsul and the mob burned down the house of the Apostle Stakhys. They dragged Philip into the square in Ierapolis, in Phrygia, pierced his ankles and left him hanging upside down on a piece of wood. Thus hanged, the glorious Apostle made his final prayer and commended his spirit into the hands of God. At once, the earth shook and, after emitting a loud roar, split and swallowed up a great many pagans. The rest, terrified at what had happened, fell at the feet of Bartholomew and Mariamni, who were also hanging, and, after cutting them down converted to the true faith: belief in Christ. After this, Bartholomew and Mariamni buried the holy relics of the Apostle Philip with all due devotion. Bartholomew then made Stakhys Bishop of Ierapolis and went his way to Lykaonia, together with Mariamni, to preach the Gospel. On Wednesday, 27 July 2011, it was reported that archeologists had unearthed a tomb which it is claimed may the tomb of Saint Philip, during excavations at Ierapolis. The Italian Professor Francesco D’Andria believes that the design of the tomb and the writing on its walls prove it is that of the Apostle. A link to this is: Tomb of Apostle Philip Found Biblical Archaeology Society, where Asia Minor is referred to, bizarrely, as Christian Turkey. (WJL)

02.01.2022 The Christmas fast Another blessed period of fasting begins, a time of spiritual struggle and an effort to turn our mind to God, each of us with the strength and spiritual ‘nobility’ at our disposal, and, as always, in conjunction with the advice of our spiritual guide. 01.01.2022 They’re people 23 November 2020 People often cast aspersions against priests. But priests are people, as well. If one person makes a mistake in life, that doesn’t mean that everybody’s to blame. A priest might err, as well, but that’s not the fault of all other priests. ‘Don’t judge, that you be not judged’, says Christ. Because one day we’ll be judge by the same measure by which we judged others. Who are we to judge? Let us pray that God will illumine every person. As much a...s we can, let’s forgive. 01.01.2022 Nasty and ungrateful 25 November 2020 ’Sweetest Jesus, you who were sinless God suffered so, so many injuries, so much contention, so many curses, and so much mockery from such a large number of people who hated you and bore you such ill-will. And you endured all that with tolerance, for my love and salvation. And I, sinner that I am, spiteful and wretched, protest and say Why is the Elder giving me that bitter medicine of salvation? I deserve everything I get. I’ve got ...no excuse and can only be patient and take up my Cross which your goodness has granted for my salvation’. Elder Efraim, Arizona
