20.01.2022 G O O D. Q U E S T I O N. . I still remember cooking my first lamb roast when I first moved out of home. Not only did I manage to lock myself out of my unit block for some time while it was in the oven, but the finished product was so fatty, I couldn’t even bring myself to find the meat under there It was a shoulder cut, and I was not Jamie Oliver, it seemed . Flash forward and I’m confidently using raw lamb in our brand new meal. What’s the difference? Well, it’s subu...rban pup’s four years of relationship development with multiple premium butchers. This means I can name the fat percentage required nutritionally, nominate the exact cuts of meat it comes from (with expert advice) and have it all minced to a custom blade and quantity - for optimum texture and freshness when it comes to SP’s signature prepping and packaging stage. . To be fair, all proteins have fatty and lean cuts. But the use of off-cuts (and worse!) in commercially processed food can exacerbate the fat component, and give particular proteins a particularly bad wrap. But fat isn’t inherently bad in fact, it’s a key part of achieving the ‘all life stages’ nutrient requirements of our two new recipes. (And protein isn’t inherently good if it’s unbalanced more on that in our next pork concerns post!) . So, our new lamb meal is formulated firmly at 10% fat, just less than our beef meal actually - but with a slightly richer taste and tummy-feel. Very basically, 10% is where you can consider meals switch from reduced fat to moderate fat. So if you pup’s actually HAD pancreatitis, 10% is the magic number we suggest you sit underneath for at least a while thereafter (our chicken & turkey meals all fit that brief!) And if you have a healthy pup (and esp a healthy new puppy!) 10% should be very digestible as always, in moderation, as part of your pup’s overall nutritional range. . 09.01.2022 A L W A Y S. A S K. . I’m going to start with another anecdote, because I UNDERSTAND we all have preconceptions. My grade 12 biology lab had a shelf, with a jar, with a pig organ inside it, and a WHOLE pile of worms inside that. Ugh. I couldn’t touch a pork steak for years. Then again I ate bacon well into my 30s... . Here in 2020, pork parasites (esp trichinosis) are carefully monitored. To be honest, the treatment of pigs before they become pork remains much more of a ...concern. And that’s why we use free-range (and of course human-grade) pork from a butcher who speaks directly to his farmer. And while our own two tzus love fresh raw pork, we’ve chosen to cook our pork meal to Safe Food Qld standards. And we use super-clean organic organs from other animals to achieve this meal’s nutritional profile. . Why then don’t we see more pork-based dog food? Here’s a thing: humans consume more pork offcuts. Think smoked meat and salamis. Even the gelatin in lollies (also sourced from larger cows). There simply isn’t the same amount of waste protein from these medium sized animals available to commercial dog food producers. . I’ve also heard mention of pork being nutritionally deficient. We’ve provided a protein comparison for your reference (plus you’ll notice our lightly cooked meals feature slightly higher protein levels - due to their slightly lower moisture levels, which makes sense right?!) Pork is also considered a readily digestible protein which is important for the actual absorption of nutrients present, and even regarded as a cooling meat by Chinese Medicine. . One thing you may NOT know about pork (I didn’t until recently!) is that its Omega 3:6 ratio needs to be adjusted for dogs during recipe development. And as with all proteins, there’s a calcium:phosphorous ratio that needs to be managed for pups, so it’s not just about maximising protein with abandon! Of course we’ve ensured all this too as always with the guidance of a canine nutritionist, in reference to AAFCO requirements...and with the shameless helicoptering of a dog mum .
