19.01.2022 Thought Id share this message I wrote about mouth versus nose breathing. Hope it makes sense! Why is mouth breathing bad? There is a more complex way to explain it but the simple version is that with mouth breathing, you use different parts of the lungs to nose breathing and some of this is going to parts of the lungs that are less efficient with gas exchange. So this means that some of the breath is wasted. This means less oxygen in and less carbon dioxide out per breath. ... As the body has to maintain carbon dioxide levels at a near constant value, the compensation is to take more breaths. This keeps the carbon dioxide balanced but the wasted breath means the oxygen levels do not go up. Its an important concept because some people call this increased rate of breathing hyperventilation but thats actually not what it is. It is normal ventilation brought about by an increase in the breathing rate to even things out. The low oxygen levels in kids is bad for their brains and heart to name but just 2 organs.

14.01.2022 Do you know about the STOP BANG screening tool for adult sleep apnoea? Its a method of stratification of likely risk based on 8 criteria, as follows: Snore Loudly enough to be heard outside of the room or your getting thumped by your bed partner to quieten down. Tired often, sleepy during the day Observed periods of stopping breathing or choking or gasping for breath ... Score one point for each question that is a yes. If you score 0-2, its a low risk, 3-4 is an middle ground risk. You are high risk if you scored 5-8 points. You are also high risk if you scored yes to 2 or more STOP questions and yes to any one of the following: male, BMI more than 35, or large neck circumference.
