25.01.2022 Were you lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the snow on the Great Dividing Range this past week? We had nearly 100mm of the wet stuff at Perisher. That cold fro...nt also brought plenty of rain which means unregulated flow extends to the Hume-Yarrawonga reach until 1 Sept. All explained in our weekly report ow.ly/jPDf50Bbh8z See more

25.01.2022 A small environmental flow is making its way down the lower Darling River to help native fish populations recover, almost two years on from devastating mass dea...ths. Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder Jody Swirepik, said the flow would improve the condition of the lower Darling/Baaka and help Murray cod take advantage of their first chance to breed since the deaths. Environmental flows in 2016-17 supported one of the strongest Murray cod spawning responses in 20 years in the lower Darling/Baaka so we know that the approach can work, Ms Swirepik said. Barkindji elder Badger Bates said the flow would also bring positivity to the community along the river during the pandemic. WaterNSW modelling has helped design a flow that will have "minimal effect" on the drought reserve at the Menindee Lakes, with between 16 and 26 gigalitres of the 464GL currently in storage available for use, The flow is expected to run until mid-January, and flow rates may change if monitoring shows it’s needed to help native fish.

22.01.2022 It’s National Threatened Species Day a day to learn about plants and animals at risk of extinction. The iconic Mallleefowl is a threatened species that calls ...the Loddon Mallee region home. Malleefowl don’t build nests in trees. Instead, they use their strong feet to scrape leaf litter and sand from the ground and into a large pile. Eggs are then laid into a cavity at the top of the mound and covered over. The leaf litter begins to compost and generates heat, incubating the eggs. The male scrapes material onto or off the mound to keep the temperature just right. Amazing, huh? Over the past few years, Forest Fire Management Victoria officers have helped create more habitat for this amazing bird as part of a Connecting Country project funded by Mallee Catchment Management Authority. They’ve planted over 7,500 native trees, creating a wildlife corridor across 80 hectares of land that connects Wyperfeld National Park and Baring State Forest. #NationalThreatenedSpeciesDay #BiodiversityMonth

22.01.2022 REGIONAL VICTORIANS CAN GET ON THE WATER The NSW Government has amended its public health order to allow more regional Victorians from outside the border region... to use the Murray River, a Liberal MP has announced. Member for Albury Justin Clancy said the revised order allowed anyone who has been in Victoria over a 14-day period to access the Murray River without a permit, "provided that they do not enter an embankment, dock, port or wharf on the northern side of the river". Regional Victorians can qualify provided they have not been in a restricted area or a COVID-19 area of concern. "This is an important and much needed step for tourism operators on the Murray and an improvement we’ve been pushing for the past few weeks," Mr Clancy said. Tourism operators and the Murray Regional Tourism board had warned some river-based businesses faced closure if their main regional Victorian market remained blocked from accessing the Murray River under NSW's border controls. "This has been the fight of my life for our business, and many others, but the elation that has come from this announcement really has me on cloud nine," Ashton Kruezer, from Mildura Paddle Steamers, said. "From numerous letters to ministers, phone calls, setbacks, meetings, emails, texts, to finally - a result."

17.01.2022 Deadly Hi friends. I was hesitant to post these on this page as I know you love my landscapes and portraits but thought I might lose a few followers haha Pretty proud of these shots from the other evening. Both found within about 10m of each other down on the river bank.

10.01.2022 The Murray Cod closed season is from September 1st to November 30th inclusive. It’s that time of year when I hang up my cod gear and pull out the yella gear! Re...creational anglers are reminded that all waters within Sunraysia are closed to fishing for our iconic Murray Cod during this time. You may know that the season is closed because of the breeding cycle, but do you know the consequences of targeting or even fishing during the closed season? Both female and male Murray Cod are very caring and accommodating parents and the closed season is in place to help protect the eggs and the young of Murray Cod from predators such as other native and non-native fish species. Just by catching a female Murray Cod leading up to their breeding cycle can cause a disastrous consequence, this can be in the way of a miscarriage or reabsorbing their eggs, this basically means that they will not spawn for that year. Male Murray Cod are also very protective and spend a large amount of time and effort protecting their eggs from predators. When you catch a Murray Cod during the closed season, you could be taking that father from the nest, and by doing so other predators have the opportunity to raid the nest and the chances are, you just killed 20,000+ eggs! Do you think that process is sustainable? It is also against the law to purposely target Murray Cod during closed season, but it is really hard to determine what is classed as ‘targeting Murray cod'. This is only my opinion, but I believe ‘targeting Murray cod' is using medium to large lures or artificial baits (bigger than 85mm) - like spinnerbaits, crankbaits, surface lures and any hard-bodied lure. If you wish to target other native fish species during Murray Cod closed season and you are using any artificial bait, then please use the smaller types. This would be any hard-bodied lure that is 85mm or less, or spinnerbaits which would be 3/8 oz and smaller and without big plastic bodies. The Penalty Notice for taking Murray Cod from closed NSW waters start at $500, but remember there are places that you can fish for Murray Cod that are open all year round (check out your local fisheries website) Hopefully these small changes in practice will help reduce the chance of catching a Murray Cod, but, ideally it is best not to fish at all. Remember this: When I’m on the nest give me a rest! Picture-Marika Lampard holding a metre plus fish

09.01.2022 The Resource Manager for Northern Victoria today announced an update to the 2020/21 seasonal determinations. Resource Manager Mark Bailey said resources improve...d following rain over the last fortnight. Flows into the major storages in all systems increased after the rain, which enabled the seasonal determinations to rise, particularly in the Broken, Campaspe and Bullarook systems, he said.
