14.01.2022 Most dams in Queensland are built purely for water supply. Sunwater dams are not designed to provide downstream flood mitigation. Flood mitigation happens when the rate of water released from the dam is less than the water flowing into the dam from the catchment and rainfall. While a dam may delay floodwaters simply by being there, it’s unsafe to assume it can stop flooding in your area. Expecting floodwaters to only pass through your local dam can mean you miss an important ...early warning relating to another local creek, river or stream. Check out the ‘understand your catchment’ page through the below link to learn how a catchment operates. https://bit.ly/preparingforweatherevents

05.01.2022 Sunwater operates both gated and ungated dams. Ungated dams An ungated dam uses the spillway and outlet to release water downstream. When an ungated dam reaches its maximum storage level, excess water will naturally flow over the spillway and continue into the downstream river. Sunwater cannot control how much water flows over the spillway.... Gated dams Spillway gates are positioned within the dam wall and are used to regulate the flow of excess water into the downstream river. Many gated dams do not provide flood mitigation and are designed to operate in a similar way to an ungated dam by releasing water once the storage reaches its maximum capacity. Learn more about how our dams operate by downloading the ‘how Sunwater dams work’ resource from the Sunwater website: https://bit.ly/preparingforweatherevents
