20.01.2022 Vale Terry Chakley It is with great sadness that we advise of the untimely passing of a long time friend of 121 Care, Terry Chakley. Terry was one of two people who set up 121 Care, previously Quality Lifestyle Alliance, in 1992 so that people with spinal injuries could live independently of their families. Terry has been a long time valued life member of our organisation, having served on our Management Committee until about 2013. Terry is survived by his sister Karen, h...is parents Mervyn and Bev, brothers Karl and David and his faithful Jack Russell terrier, Joss who will be heartbroken as she went everywhere with him. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and also to his staff, some of whom have been with him for 7 years. - Kym Chomley, CEO 121 Care. See more

13.01.2022 Supporting young people with disability to access NDIS employment support Did you know NDIS support can be accessed for school to work transition, and may be accessed much earlier than the final year of school? In fact, providers can support students that have an employment goal from around age 14. The NDIS Price Guide 2020-21 outlines that transition and employment support can be ‘supplied to any working-age participant (including students reaching working age) with an emplo...yment goal'. This may include supports to: explore what work would mean for them (discovery); build essential foundation skills for work; managing complex barriers to obtaining and sustaining employment; specialised job customisation; develop a career plan; and other capacity-building supports that are likely to lead to successful engagement in a Disability Employment Service. Research demonstrates that education and employment outcomes are significantly improved through exposure to real work experiences and career development opportunities at school. The NDS Ticket to Work ‘After School Jobs Project’ is an example of supporting students with disability into employment while at school. Providers may like to encourage young people, their parents and carers to consider including Transition and Employment Support in their next NDIS plan review. Even before then, Community Participation funding can be used to help start the journey to employment, including for volunteering or work experience placements. http://ow.ly/HxtW50BCe0P

10.01.2022 Back in August, Minister Roberts announced hanges associated with moving the NDIS from implementation to a full-scheme operating environment. They will help deliver improvements requested by many participants, families and carers, and providers. The Participant Service Charter, a key element of the Tune Review, establishes five principles for how the Agency will engage with participants: * Transparent * Responsive... * Respectful * Empowering * Connected It establishes timeframes for processes, such as the period in which the Agency must make decisions about access, plan approvals, plan reviews and nominee changes. While the Charter requires legislative changes, it is being implemented immediately, with the Agency beginning reporting on its performance against these timeframes immediately. 04.01.2022 PART 1 SURVIVING THE HOLIDAYS Getting through the holiday season can be a bit like the Griswolds or not, depends on how you view the occasion. To help get some perspective and manage the inevitable stress that this time brings for some, here are some helpful tips from ACCESS EAP. 1. Respect difference We are fortunate in Australia to live in a multi-cultural society often referred to as a melting pot. Be mindful of how different cultures and religions celebrate the holiday ...season differently. Even from one family to another, the ways in which the same holidays are celebrated may differ greatly. Use these opportunities to embrace diversity and exercise respect and tolerance. 2. The best things in life are free Think back to your answers to the questions at the beginning of this article. How many of the things in your life you consider the most important are free? While there is a commercial emphasis on gifts this time of year, remember to also give time, love and care. Consider homemade gifts and gifts of experience. For example, many grandparents would prefer to have lunch with their children and grandchildren than to receive a gift. 3. First things first Although many go on holiday during the holiday season, it can often be very busy and not feel much like a holiday at all. Reflect on what you really want to do with your time and make sure to focus on your priorities like making memories with loved ones and getting rest. Try not get swept up into doing too much and end up feeling worn out. 4. It’s OK to Say NO Remember that you can say NO when you start to feel overloaded you don’t have to complete every task before Christmas January is just around the corner. Set goals of items to complete before holiday and be kind to yourself if you need to re-evaluate those goals before going on leave. 5. Put yourself first No one else can rest you, or walk you or breath for you only we can do this for ourselves. Make time to recharge. See more
