24.01.2022 PEP11 covers 4.500 square kilometres stretching along the coast between Newcastle and Sydney and out to the continental shelf. The permit is licensed to a joint venture between Advent Energy and Bounty Oil and Gas, who have already conducted years of seismic testing and have several prospect drilling areas already identified. They are pushing ahead with plans to drill exploratory wells as early as 2021. The PEP 11 zone is within sight of the coastline between Newcastle and Sy...dney. If developed, gas rigs could be seen along the horizon. PEP 11 is the only offshore oil and gas exploration permit off the NSW coast, and the fact it sits directly off Australia’s largest, most iconic city speaks to the super charged development of gas in Australia. WE stand against new offshore oil and gas development. We want clean coasts and climate action. We want swell on the horizon. Not gas rigs. #PEPOFF!! #thisisnotadrill #killthedrill

24.01.2022 Development company Consolidated Properties is seeking to build an intensive residential and mixed use development with a 'wave pool' (marketed as Surf Ranch Sunshine Coast) on a 510ha parcel within the Maroochy River floodplain at Coolum West. This land, is zoned ‘Rural’ and outside the Urban Footprint in the relevant South East Queensland Regional Plan (SEQRP/Shaping SEQ) and outside the Urban Growth Management Boundary in the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme. The Maroochy Ri...ver floodplain within the dynamic Maroochy River catchment contains the diverse ecosystems of the majestic Maroochy River, creeks, estuaries, wetlands and saltmarsh. It provides habitat for a range of animals including migratory birds and threatened species. OSCAR, Surfrider Sunshine Coast, Coolum Residents Association, Friends of Yaroomba, Development Watch and SCEC are working together to protect the Maroochy River floodplain from this intensive urban development. Join Melva Hobson (OSCAR), Narelle McCarthy (SCEC), Lynette Saxton (Development Watch) and Steve James (Surfrider Sunshine Coast) as they discuss the project and it's impact on the environment and community.

21.01.2022 Tune in to hear the latest on the Coolum West intensive urban development and 'Wave Pool'. Wednesday 26th 6:30PM Check out the event page for more information. #protectmaroochywetland

19.01.2022 A few weeks back our committee, their family and some of DI Clean Up 'Super Stars (aka Darcy) spent the weekend camping up at DI to celebrate the 2020 Clean Up Double Island...its 10th year running! It was a great weekend One of the first opportunities we have had for our core group of volunteers to get together and catch up since COVID began early this year! This year we were unable to host our usual annual Clean Up Double Island weekend due to COVID restrictions... Each year we have had hundreds of volunteers come together to help clean up the Cooloola National Park beaches. This is a huge community collaboration, including the ongoing support from Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services, Ocean Crusaders, @cleanwatergroup and many local businesses, community groups and organisations! A whooping 1-2 tonnes of rubbish is collected at each event A huge bummer we couldn't celebrate it with you this year, but looking forward to seeing all our wonderful volunteers at next years clean up event In the meantime, we can all do our bit today for beautiful coastlines! Make it your mission to pick up at least 3 pieces of trash up from the beach, creek, your local park or bushland reserve every time you visit it! A simple habit with a huge impact to the health of our ocean

15.01.2022 Road signs are up! Have you spotted them? A 510 ha mixed-use urban development (including the 'Surf Ranch Sunshine Coast') has been proposed by Consolidated Properties. This intensive urban development's proposed location is part of the Maroochy River floodplain, subject to permanent flooding/standing water and tidal inundation and acid sulphate soils and also within the Blue Heart Sunshine Coast. The Blue Heart project aims to establish a regionally-significant complex of w...etland and floodplain ecosystems whilst enhancing water quality in the Maroochy River through nutrient management and sediment reduction works. The project will also provide community and recreation opportunities through regional parkland, open space and trails and establish new uses for existing rural and agricultural lands, including economic opportunities for landowners. This proposal is against good planning practices and does not comply with a number of planning policies and frameworks. No proposal for any further residential development on the Maroochy Floodplain should be considered. It is particularly important, given the flood data available and the challenges of climate change, that we do not further compromise the flood storage capacity of the Maroochy Floodplain and the available habitat for a number of species. We must protect the ecological function of the floodplain and ensure that we mitigate the the risk of climate change on the low-lying coastal communities we call home. Don't break our blue heart! 10.01.2022 Drilling for gas off our coast? This may be a reality very soon, we must come together NOW and stop this stupidity! Our beautiful coast, our way of life and marine life is under threat. Oil and Gas companies’ shocking plans to drill for fossil fuels off the iconic NSW coast are being approved while we have been distracted with COVID 19 ... Gas isn't the answer to a stable economy post COVID. In fact it will contribute to worsening our future economy and life as we know it. We are in a time where the extraction and burning of fossil fuels can not continue, we need to reduce our emissions and draw down! PEP-11 if approved will further hinder Australia and the world's ability to become resilient and adapt to future changes to our climate that we will experience as a result of our current carbon footprint to date. Check out Surfrider Foundation Australia's post for how you can support this campaign and act today Together we can make positive waves of change

08.01.2022 STANDING TOGETHER WE CAN #STOPPEP11 Surfers and ocean lovers around Australia, we're calling on you to continue spreading the #stoppep11 message! This Monday a motion was brought before parliament with 8 federal MPs standing up in support of the motion to #stoppep11.... It's time to STOP PEP-11 & here's what you can do. PETROLEUM EXPLORATION PERMIT 11 is a licence for oil & gas exploration in our Sydney Basin due to expire in February 2021 that’s right, just off our beaches between Manly and Newcastle! Mining companies ADVENT Energy, BPH & Bounty Oil & Gas are now pushing for NOPTA (National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator) to approve a licence extension and change the title to allow drilling for oil & gas offshore. To add to this, there’s a motion before federal parliament to stop PEP11, which means a decision on the issue could be imminent, so we need to make some noise on this!! Join our #stopPEP11 social media campaign and stand with us in telling politicians that our communities will not let this incredible coastline we call home be put at risk and strongly oppose the industrialisation of our oceans. We have three actions you can take right here on Facebook and Instagram. 1. Using our AR-Filter on instagram, head to your local beach or a headland, take a photo and tag. #stopPEP11 Keith Pitt John Barilaro and your local Federal MP. To download the AR-Filter click the linktr.ee link below 2. Sign the petition 3. Email your MP to STOP PEP 11 Head to www.linktr.ee/surfrideraus to act today! A huge shout out must go out to Save Our Coast / Stop Seismic Testing for their ongoing efforts. And a thank you to so many people who have shared the message far and wide thank you to you all for your incredible contributions this past week. Surfrider Foundation Australia
