23.01.2022 The police boat is presently out at Winki Pop taking note of all the surfers in the water and filming them. There are 50 surfers at Winki & 50 surfers at Bells ...with 180 cars in the carparks. Southside carpark is full. Its up to you, do you want to have surfing banned? The last thing we want is for the virus to be spread or for all beach activities to be banned because of the actions of surfers. Please follow the rules around not gathering on the beach, in the water or on the cliffs watching and staying more than 1.5 metres apart. 22.01.2022 Here is the question that should be asked after we have lost thousands of homes, ruined the hopes and livelihoods of thousands of people, put thousands of peopl...e at risk, lost countless animals and their habitats, lost human lives, caused grief, affected people all over the world, witnessed the mismanagement and lack of care of our governments, and the story never ends - why are we not engaging and using our Indigenous People to head our Fire Management Programs? Please do not misunderstand - we very much appreciate the courage, efforts, expertise and time our magnificent and valiant firefighters / volunteers / community are undertaking. We all commend you and appreciate your hard and exhausting work but I have personally witnessed the incredible preventative or creative works that our Indigenous People undertake to manage their Land.........it is amazing and it works. Ill just insert some words from the Aboriginal culture: Meaning of fire Fire is an important symbol in Aboriginal culture. Traditionally it was used as a practical tool in hunting, cooking, warmth and managing the landscape. It also holds great spiritual meaning, with many stories, memories and dance being passed down around the fire; Cultural Burning is a contemporary term used to define this traditional practice. Cultural Burning practices were developed by Aboriginal people to enhance the health of the land and its people. It includes burning (or prevention of burning) for the health of particular plants and animals; Indigenous fire management involves the lighting of cool fires in targeted areas during the early dry season. The fires burn slowly, reducing fuel loads and creating fire breaks; The first fire burns a circle around Aboriginal peoples living area so they are safe. Early dry-season, cool fires trickle through the landscape and burn only some of the fuel, creating a network, or mosaic, of burnt firebreaks. These stop the late dry-season, hot fires; and Cool burning reduces the amount of damage done by hot fires to ecosystems by promoting new plant growth and clearing natural waste materials. It makes sense to me - our Aboriginal People are fire management geniuses. Thank you to everyone for these great pictures and words - if I havent thanked or credited you individually or personally .......... it is not out of disrespect. We are all in this together and I / We are all on your mission/ drive for what we are experiencing, to NEVER happen again.

21.01.2022 If the idea of an oil spill from the Great Australian Bight hitting the beaches in Sydney freaked you out, Advent Energys PEP 11 proposal will do your head in.... PEP 11 (Petroleum Exploration Permit 11) is a 4,500 square km zone of the ocean from Manly to Newcastle that will be opened up for oil and gas exploration. Despite opposition from Newcastle, Central Coast and Northern Beaches local councils, the federal government continues to push this harmful and risky project on our community. At the moment dozens of whales are travelling through this zone daily on their traditional migratory paths north. PEP 11 has the potential to significantly impact this whale highway and major environmental assets between Sydney and Newcastle. Stay tuned! See more

21.01.2022 Surfrider Australia has teamed up with the Schmidt Ocean Institute to relay much needed information to the people of the World regarding their research and disc...overies Microplastics: Surface to Sediment Cairns, Australia July As plastics are broken down in the ocean particles form, and their physical properties change (e.g., density, size, shape), they become ingrained in marine snow and sink through the water column. As they sink their density discontinuity slows, stopping the sinking process and allowing an aggregation of microplastic particles to form. Over time, snow particles containing microplastics continue to sink and end up in the sediments, producing a historical record as a function of depth. Dr. Scott Gallager (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) and his team will meet R/V Falkor in Australia to better understand the fate of microplastics from surface to sediments in areas of accretion and dispersal. The science team will study and quantify the abundance and polymer type of microplastics in the deep sea using new technology developed to detect and quantify microplastics. Using a suite of tools and technology including Falkors High Performance Computing and numerical modeling, airborne imaging, Lagrangian surface floats, robotic surface samplers, midwater samplers and robotic systems, genomic sequencing, benthic samplers and ROV SuBastian, the scientists will provide a complete end-to-end description and characterization of where the missing plastics may be located. The roles going will be for 2-3... casuals required 10-20 hours per week (work from home as long as you have a laptop and internet). You will need the following skill sets (all are desirable but not mandatory) to be suitable for these roles: University level report writing skills Experience In feasibility studies Auditing experience Microsoft excel and word experience Carbon assessment experience Experience in developing business plans Science or engineering background desirable but not mandatory. This is a perfect opportunity to develop your environmental and business development skills. This particular study is unique and will be a pioneer project to the carbon industry. They rowed for 39 days ... 2 hours on / 2 hours off!! Rowing, sleeping, eating for 3,000 miles of non stop rowing! So proud of you fellas!! Thank you.

Surfrider Foundation Australias Endangered Waves program aims to highlight the many threats endangering a number of Australias most unique and fragile surfing and coastal environments. An #EndangeredWave is one where the wave itself is threatened, or the immediate coastal environment and surfing amenity is threatened by one or more of the threats listed within our Endangered Waves Criteria. Surfriders grassroots volunteer branch network mobilises local community action to protect waves listed as endangered. This Monday a motion was brought before parliament with 8 federal MPs standing up in support of the motion to #stoppep11. It's time to STOP PEP-11 & here's what you can do. PETROLEUM EXPLORATION PERMIT 11 is a licence for oil & gas exploration in our Sydney Basin due to expire in February 2021 that’s right, just off our beaches between Manly and Newcastle! Mining companies ADVENT Energy, BPH & Bounty Oil & Gas are now pushing for NOPTA (National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator) to approve a licence extension and change the title to allow drilling for oil & gas offshore. To add to this, there’s a motion before federal parliament to stop PEP11, which means a decision on the issue could be imminent, so we need to make some noise on this!! Join our #stopPEP11 social media campaign and stand with us in telling politicians that our communities will not let this incredible coastline we call home be put at risk and strongly oppose the industrialisation of our oceans. 08.01.2022 Hi all, As we head into the upcoming period of social isolation, our very own Ambassador; Master Freediving Instructor @lucas_handley will be running online courses on breath hold physiology. His course is great for anyone wanting to surf in big waves or simply to gain more confidence in the ocean. His team of instructors at @theunderwateracademy will also be running weekly online classes, focusing on lung health and strengthening, dry training for breath-hold sports, equalisation workshops and much more. We love that he and his team have supported us in many of our events, and cannot be more proud to recommend him and everything he does for our ocean people. This is a great opportunity to focus on our own development and prepare for many more great days in the water. Stay safe out there people!

If developed, gas rigs could be seen along the horizon. PEP 11 is the only offshore oil and gas exploration permit off the NSW coast, and the fact it sits directly off Australias largest, most iconic city speaks to the super charged development of gas in Australia.
