25.01.2022 Last week a small but determined contingent of swimmers from the club traveled to Adelaide to compete in the 2019 MSA National Championships. The happy band of swimmers consisted of Adrian, Andy, Catherine, Darryl, Dee & Peter. They competed in a total of 41 events over 3 days of pool swims and a day of Open Water swimming where they acquitted themselves mightily. In all, they achieved an outstanding performance success of 2 Gold, 3 Silver and 8 Bronze medal placings. Thats not to mention within the group they managed a total of 30 personal best performance times and broke a staggering 33 club records. A fantastic result.

25.01.2022 Did you miss the Club Cheese and Wine Tasting Event? 22 club members enjoyed a fabulous night of cheese and matched wine tasting at the Flukes home in Mont Albert on Saturday 15 June. On the night, India Flukes presented to the gathering a group of 6 very different cheeses for tasting and explained their origins, history and special characteristics. Meanwhile, Peter Lord presented 6 wines he had matched to them and like India, explained their history, origins and why they co...mplemented the particular selected cheeses. He gave ideas of similar matching wines and where they were available and what was fair pricing. A big thank you goes out to India and Peter for all their planning and hard work. Thanks to Darryl and Louise for the use of their beautiful home for the staging of the event, their work and support in the preparation and cheese donation to support the event. Thanks also to Peter Lord and Kathleen Nagle for wine donations for people to appreciate. A few following photos tries to convey the lavish setup and the great time had by all who attended. See more

24.01.2022 Hi guys, since our last post in late January, like many organisations we have had our Facebook posts on hold (in hibernation) expecting this would be for a short time. Unfortunately that has proven a tad optimistic. So time for us to shake off our funk and get moving with this new norm we find ourselves living in until we are back in the pool. To that end we want to reconnect with you all and are restarting our Facebook posts and launch of our Instagram pages. With pools closed down, some Surrey Park Seahorses have persisted with ocean swims right through winter. With water temps hovering around 11 degrees, these brave (crazy?) souls certainly earned their post-swim hot chocolates and jam donuts!

24.01.2022 Local Haunts: It's time to enjoy that additional hour of exercise each day by discovering a new local haunt in your area! The Darebin Creek Trail is a good one to explore in you live nearby. It's a shared cycling/walking path that follows a picturesque route from Kew Billabong along the winding creek to the Darebin Parklands and beyond. A good one for a longer walk on a sunny spring day!

A booking has made for 6:30pm at Vicky's Pizza Restaurant 5/7 Strathalbyn St, Kew East. All members are most welcome to attend and just ask that you contact Shane Austin by phone on 0423866208 or email [email protected] by close Monday 8th July if coming so he can finalize the numbers with the restaurant. 23.01.2022 Local Haunts: the Main Yarra Trail is a great option for a walk or bike ride. As it runs for about 40km from the city to Templestowe, theres likely to be a section within your 5km travel zone. The river flats around Heidelberg and Banyule are particularly lovely at the moment, making you feel a million miles from the city. And theres always the River Yarra, for those missing the open water or the pool!

23.01.2022 So it may be cold, wet, windy and sunny every day lately, hmm.... typical Melbourne weather but that doesn't deter Surrey Park Seahorse Masters from training. So many advantages swimming at this time of the year. No crowds, definitely warmer in than out and as shown in the attached photo taken last Saturday it affords the opportunity to get together after training at a local coffee shop for a warming drink, some food and cheerful conversation. So don't lay in bed late trying to avoid the weather, get out and come join us and justify those post training calories consumed which by the way don't come close to how much you've burned at the pool! Come join us at Boroondara Balwyn pool Saturday mornings 9:30 to 10:30am for a casual group swim session.

22.01.2022 So the open water swim season is now in full swing and numerous club members are competing at events each weekend now. If you haven't tried it please talk to our club captain Darryl for all the info on how to get into this side of our sport. Besides there are plenty of us only too happy to take you along to a beach event to help show you another aspect of swimming fun. I have attached a few photos that highlight that very fact people having fun at and after Open Water events.

22.01.2022 And we're back! With outdoor pools opening in Melbourne this week, those club members lucky enough to secure a booking have been enjoying again that wonderful feeling of being in the water (other than their own bath tub!). Get in touch with club captain Darryl if you'd like to know when other club members are swimming. And we'd love for you to share your workouts, to keep us inspired and motivated as we slowly return to swim fitness - please post in the comments below.

21.01.2022 One of our eagle eyed club members has spotted what appears to be a real bargain at the Middleborough Road Box Hill South Decathlon store that might interest those just starting in open water swimming. A beginner level open water wetsuits for $49, see attached pictures. Note this in no way comes with any suggestion or endorsement of the product but if any one knows the wetsuits shown we would welcome your feedback.

21.01.2022 Seahorse members are all pretty talented in the water, but did you know that some of us have Hidden Talents? Many of these have been allowed to shine during lockdown. Andrea and India have put their creative talents to work, turning those open water competition t-shirts collected over the years into fantastic quilts. The one sown by Andrea makes a great statement for her sons bedroom. The other, sown by India, is destined as a beach rug for use at the OW events this coming season (fingers crossed). Comment below to share the creative way that you display medals, ribbons, trophies, flag pennants or bathers!

19.01.2022 So while we are in the thick of the Open Water Swimming season it hasn't stopped some of our members engaging in another water sport activity - yachting, to relax between events. A few photos below show Club Captain Darryl with family members Elliot and India aboard club member Tony's yacht last week. Looking at Darryl's smiling face one can see contentment as he is happy to defer to another Captain - Tony, to steer a steady course for the day.

19.01.2022 Local Haunts: Yarra Bend Park The Studley Park area provides lots of options for a walk, or a bike ride with some decent hills along the Boulevard. Grab a take-away coffee from the Boathouse and wander by the river - the city feels a long way away! The Dights Falls Loop Trail is a great 5km circuit, starting at the historic Kanes Bridge. You can make it in an hour, if you're quick!

17.01.2022 Sunday night saw a number of club members get together for a cosy personalized film night to watch the much acclaimed film 'Swimming with Men'. A satirical film based on the premise, 'a man who is suffering a mid-life crisis finds new meaning in his life as part of an all-male, middle-aged, amateur synchronised swimming team'. Clean, British humour at its finest - a very entertaining little film. The evening was held at Shane and Jenny's place and was to start with an early d...inner meal of pizza. Attendees had texted their pizza order through as instructed and Jenny had been conscripted to phone through and pick up the orders. Not quite all went to plan, calls to two local haunts went unanswered where upon hunter-gather wife Jenny, was dispatched to source food. First option lay in complete darkness though displayed hours claimed open, second also closed advised re opening in 2 weeks under new management, third having opened 2 weeks ago was closed this Sunday, fourth looked dubious, fifth proved successful with great tasting pizzas and now our new local. A few drinks, Malteses and Jaffers, cheese and fruit platter, a chocolate brownie bake off shared with good company, a late start but all went home having enjoyed a good night out. See more

17.01.2022 Well, the Victoria Series Open Water Swimming has concluded for the season, and Surrey Park girls have distinguished themselves. Once again showing we may be a small club but we can certainly compete with the best. Catherine achieving 2nd in the 60-69 age grouping for short course without a wetsuit, Jacqui third for the same category, while Sue achieving 3rd in the 50-59 age grouping for long course with a wetsuit. Fantastic performance girls! This leads into my second item, please be reminded that the club's Open Water Swimming presentation will be held on Saturday the 27th April. We will celebrate the personal achievements of all those who participated in any of the series swims at the King & I Thai restaurant, 613 Whitehorse Road Surrey Hills. Full details will be circulated shortly by email to members.

16.01.2022 It's been a busy time for the Surrey Park Seahorse club activities the last few weeks so it has been difficult to fit in a summary of the 18th FINA World Masters Swimming Championships held through August in Gwangju South Korea. The World Masters Swimming Championships are held every two years in the Aquatic disciplines of, Swimming, Artistic Swimming, Open Water Swimming, Diving and Water Polo. This year 7,500 Masters Athletes came to Gwangju, immediately following the Stand...ard Age World Championships to compete in an atmosphere of friendship and mutual respect and happily without any alleged drug taking controversy. Two club members Darryl Flukes and Shane Austin made the trip to compete against the world's best in their age grouping. Darryl's best performance a 6th in the 200m Fly Shane's best performance a 6th in the 200m IM Both were ecstatic that medals where awarded down to 6th place so each came home with a medal. A full summary of their successes are as follow: Darryl: 50m Fly placed 22nd, 100m Fly placed 13th, 200m Fly placed 6th, 200m IM placed 16th & 400m IM placed 8th Shane:- 50m Free place 15th, 100m Free placed 11th, 50m Breast placed 9th, 100m Breast placed 11th & 200m IM placed 6th It was an amazing experience and we have made many new friends from all parts of the globe as a consequence. Postscript: The 19th FINA World Masters Swimming Championships will be held August 2021 in Fukuoka Japan; highly recommend it to consider and you don't have to be a top swimmer - just meet the quite generous qualifying times to be able to enter an event and prepare to experience the pinnacle celebration of our sport.

15.01.2022 The club‘s Virtual Games Night 2.0 was held last Sunday 27th September. Although not as many attended as had for Virtual Trivia, it was a great night’s activity with everyone who attended the Zoom meeting enjoying themselves immensely. There were a wide variety of games during the night such as: word games, Zoom Bingo, general knowledge trivia, identifying significant places of natural beauty in Australia, matching celebrities to their childhood photo, a challenging find Whe...re’s Wally, an energetic Scavenger Hunt and finally a house of cards dexterity challenge. Every participant rose to the occasion trying their hardest to succeed at each task and although everyone was a winner, the outstanding performance on a purely numerical score basis was the Lesley, Sarah & Jenny team, just beating Tom competing on his own. Special thanks for the evening goes to Peter and Jenny for running a number of the games provided and for their great effort preparing the supporting visual media. In addition, thanks go once again to Darryl’s contributions behind the scenes with his Zoom meeting organizational skills. Below are some photos captured by Darryl from his computer screen of the Zoom Meeting during the evening.

15.01.2022 Time to acknowledge three of the club swimmers for their persistence and dedication to their sport. The Vorgee Million Metre Awards acknowledge progress from the learn to swim beginner to the distance swimmer. These awards are intended to inspire members to strive for greater fitness and are open to all registered members of Masters Swimming Australia. This year we have three swimmers being recognised for awards as follow:... Peter for 4 Million Metres Jenny for 1 Million Metres Darryl for 4 Million Metres This has meant for the three of them around 10 years of persevering with pool and open water swims through all 4 seasons and subsequent weather conditions to clock up these massive swim distances. Just to put this in context, 1 million metres or 1,000km is equivalent to a coastal road trip from Melbourne to Sydney. So while Jenny has traveled this once, Peter & Darryl would have repeated this 4 times each. Give you ideas of something to aspire to? Swimming can be for fun, for fitness, for personal achievement, for a shared experience what ever rocks your boat, see you in the pool!

15.01.2022 We had a big turnout for our online Trivia Quiz night on Saturday. Coach George and Bianca blitzed the field with a well-deserved GOLD, Peter held his own for a respectable Silver, and Lisa and Maddie were thrilled with their podium finish to earn a bronze medal. Big thanks to India for initiating and organising this event, and to all who participated with such a sense of fun (and a healthy dose competition, of course!). Well done team!

14.01.2022 Hidden Talents: Club Captain Darryl shares his new baking talents... Inspired by Jacqui, I have been working on home-baked sourdough bread. So so grateful to Jacqui, as it had provided enormous pleasure, made me new friends, and earned me a little more respect at home. If there is no sourdough in the cupboard now, the family drops the bottom-lip! It also fills in some of those empty hours of lockdown. So hows it done? Well, though it may not be by the book, this is what ...Continue reading

13.01.2022 Small Wins: Some more reading suggestions to get you through these last few weeks of lock-down (hopefully!). Jenny H recommends The Miniaturist, No Home but the Mountains, and another vote for A Gentleman in Moscow. click though to the photos for a snapshot of each book. What is helping you get to the finish line in these final weeks? Comment below!

13.01.2022 Well, restrictions are coming off quickly now with eleven straight days of no new COVID cases, well done Victoria! For us swimmers a return to normality has come a little quicker than other activities and has been welcomed. One example of this has been the return of the unofficial Club training session at the Booroondara Sports Complex on Saturday mornings, "currently starting at 10:00am". You are welcome to join us by booking yourself through the YMCA Booroondara Sports Complex on line booking system or discuss further with the club captain Darryl Flukes. The attached photo shows that more importantly post training Coffee & Cake with companionable lively conversation is back as well. All COVID safe protocols being observed.

12.01.2022 The highlight this week is the outstanding performances of Darryl Flukes in the Australian Masters Games held in Adelaide over the 5th, 6th and 7th of October. Darryl, only just recently returned from a very successful series of swims in the World Masters Championships in South Korea, has now continued his success in the AGM Games by bagging a total haul of 7 medals. Darryl was the only swimmer from Surrey Park Seahorses to compete in these Games. achieving 2 individual gold... medals: the 25m Fly and 200m Fly respectively as well as 3 individual silver medals: the 50m Fly, the 100m Fly and 400m IM. These individual event successes were then complemented by a further 2 silver medals for his participation in the teams 4x50m Freestyle relay and the Fly leg of the 4x50m Medley relay. Darryl swam for the Doncaster Dolphins. The following photo shows Darryl weighed down by his impressive 7 medals. Great effort mate! See more

12.01.2022 For those who missed the Surrey Park Seahorses Masters Club weekend away to Mt Buller, here are a few pictures taken of the happy crew enjoying themselves. Those that attended were enthusiastic about the food, cafe coffee, relaxing walks, a picnic lunch, and drop in for wine tasting at the Delatite winery on the way home. All were surprised by the standard of facilities and well appointed ski lodge. Some read by the log fire, some watched football on the big screen, while others engaged in billiards and even a table tennis tournament (girls defeated the boys so you can expect a rematch soon). All in all a great time and a request to repeat the occasion again in the future.

11.01.2022 Local Haunts: Outer Circle Trail Linear trails through Melbourne's suburbs are a great way to get some exercise close to home and away from road traffic. Often following the path of old rail lines, they provide flat, shared paths for cyclists and pedestrians. The Outer Circle Trail in East Kew links up with the Anniversary Trail in Deepdene, which runs all the way to Ashburton. The wattle are in full flower right now! https://www.boroondara.vic.gov.au//Boroondara-cycling-map.

11.01.2022 Local Haunts: Banksia Park is a hidden gem located in Bulleen. Enjoy a peaceful early morning ramble to see mist rising off the Yarra. There's a fully-fenced dog park by the river, and good walking paths through the park, along the river, and into the adjacent grounds of the Heide Art Museum. A grove of more than 60 cherry trees hides in the north-western corner and makes a magical picnic spot in spring, particularly around mid-October when the blossoms are at their peak. Let's hope restrictions are eased by then!

10.01.2022 Without PBs and club records to keep us motivated, we're featuring 'small wins' by our club members during this lockdown. Completed that tricky jigsaw? Nailed a new recipe? Even running 5km is an achievement for those of us who prefer the water! Please send your contributions to Shane or Lisa. Small win #1 from club member Lisa Moore, who has been slowly getting through her bedside pile of books. Click though to the photos to check out her recommendations for lockdown-inspired reading.

10.01.2022 Saturday night a group of the Seahorses Masters swimmers and their partners got together for a fun evening of cards at the home of Shane and Jenny. The group of committed card sharks played for several hours with merciless intent to be named this years 500s club champions (cards that is, not 2x500m relay champions). It was a strong tussle through the night and at 10:00pm games had to be called to a halt without the opportunity of the winners from the two tables being able to engage in a play of for the glory of overall winners. It was decided to award a tie for overall winners to be shared by the two individual table winners so as to allow everyone to get home for a well deserved rest before their next appearance Sunday morning at Box Hill Aqualink and the club aggregate swim (not cards).

09.01.2022 Since most of us are landlocked for a while, we're featuring some of our favourite Local Haunts: places to walk, run, ride or just soak up some fresh air and sky. Glass Creek wetlands and Hays Paddock - This is a great park for a walk or run if you are in the Kew area. Glass Creek meanders through the southern part of the park amongst large gums and small wetland areas. Walking paths circle two sports ovals providing lots of wide open space to kick a footie or let the dogs off leash.

08.01.2022 Get ready for THE ANIMAL! The Club's Baddaginne Animal event has been extended until the end of the year. The challenge is to swim 200 Fly, 200 Back, 200 Breast, 800 Free and 400 IM on the same day. Time to start training! Here's a workout activate those IM muscles (please adapt to your own fitness level): Warm Up: 2 x 100m free, 2 x 100m mixed form Main set: ... 4x100m free 100m freestyle 75 free/25 fly 50 free/50 back 50 free/50 breast 25 free/75 form 50 free/50 breast 50 free/50 back 75 free/25 fly Cool down: 2 x 100m mixed form stroke/drills 2x 100 kick (2km) See more

08.01.2022 While those still home in Melbourne shivering in sub artic temperatures spare a thought to our international teams Sue and Dee who have just completed the Samoa Swim Series and Pacific Open Water Championships in Samoa. In the Pacific series Dee achieved 8th in the 10km & 13th in 5km while Sue had 2nd in the 10km & 6th in the 5km. Then for the Samoa Series Dee had a 23rd, a 20th & a 23rd for the three 4km swims while Sue a 9th, a 9th & a 16th for the same three swims. Outstanding swims all and hopefully they did spend a little time on dry land. Photos below show the girls with their Woodals (wooden medals) presented at the end of the completion of each series.

07.01.2022 The State Masters Long Course Championships were held at MSAC on Sunday 3rd March where Seahorses were represented by Peter, Phil, Kelly, Dorothy, Catherine and Darryl. The group swam away with a combined place total in their respective age groups of six first places, six second places and four third places. An extremely creditable performance from such a small talented group. Following the swim meet most of the swimmers and and partners enjoyed a meal together at the Tacco & Tosca restaurant in Middle Park a picture the group proudly displaying their medal & ribbon haul shown below

06.01.2022 Local Haunts: Box Hill Gardens An often overlooked spot for a walk or run in the middle of Box Hill is Box Hill Gardens, opposite Box Hill Hospital. The park has a 1km long path around the inside perimeter of the gardens. The marked start point is on the Irving Avenue side of the park, with 100m markings to assist you for distance reference. The inner edge portion of the path is a soft synthetic surface suitable for running whilst a wider outer concrete surface is mainly use...d by walkers. Other attractions include: a large playground, basketball court, permanent table tennis, exercise area, shelters, barbecues, toilets, water fountains and spectacular open grassy areas making it appealing any time for a family venue. A really big plus is that the path is fully lit at night. If you're keen for a walk with one of our members, please contact coach Sean. See more

06.01.2022 While some of us were still shivering in Melbournes cool spring weather, two club members, Lesley & Lisa, chose to slip out of Melbourne and headed off to tropical Fiji. They, along with 200 other open water swimmers of various nationalities, mainly New Zealanders and Australians but also a smattering of Americans, Japanese and Singaporeans participated in the 2019 Ocean Swim Fiji. This series of events is held over 3 days with a choice of either 1km or a 3km swim at breatht...aking Fijian beach and island locations; a summary of swims follows: Day 1- Shane Gould and her husband put on some technique demos after which it was 2 laps of Tivua Island. First lap quite a pleasant swim but gusty conditions...then turning for the second lap up sprung 40km per hour winds. Day 2 High winds and surf required the planned Natadola Beach swim transferred to a very pleasant sheltered swim off Denarau shoreline. Day 3 Consisted of three laps around Malamala Island to complete the swimming program while that evening consisted of presentations and demonstrations of Fijian fire twirling. Day 4 Muck up day with a trip to the local mud baths. The next day following the swim events the hard work for Lesley and Lisa started in earnest ...finding appropriately located deck chairs and a good book. The day after that, the two former teachers visited a local school and spent time with some rather cheeky children. In summary the highlight of the trip was the warm and friendly nature of Fijians. The event was a sellout and brilliantly organised. Bookings for next years event are now open and highly recommended. Thank you Lesley for sharing your swim holiday experience and photos. See more

06.01.2022 6 club members attended the Masters Swimming Victoria Gala Dinner held at the Richmond Town Hall, on Saturday August 3rd. 70 people attended to recognize the swimmers, volunteers and officials who keep our sport vibrant. This was the first such Gala Dinner which is intended to be an ongoing yearly event. The major highlight of the evening in our club estimation was undoubtedly the award of the "Outstanding Official of the Year" going to our own Paul Watmough for his huge efforts and support to MSV over the years officiating at many MSV sanctioned swimming events as well as participation on various committees. Attached is the picture of Paul receiving his award.

05.01.2022 Once again the club showed its depth of swimming talent when 9 of its members, Adrian, Shane, Darryl, Dee, Peter, Phillip, Kelly, John and Catherine, competed in the Victorian Master State Short Course Championships, last Saturday at MSAC Albert Park. Fantastic performances from them all doing the club proud and with a number of personal best times. In terms of competitive measures though the group finished the day with a total placing tally of 12 x 1st placings, 15 x 2nd pla...cings and 6 x 3rd placings. One outstanding performance we cant miss the opportunity of singling out was new national record set by Adrian in the 25m Breaststroke race. At the completion of the days events many of the competing club members, family & friends gathered at Vickys Pizza Restaurant East Kew for dinner and to celebrate the days successes. During the evening club captain Darryl presented, to those swimmers present their placing trophies as shown below. See more

05.01.2022 On Saturday the club was represented by 8 swimmers: Darryl, Lisa, Tom, Catherine, Shane, Kelly & Sean at the Victorian Masters State Relay Championships. A small number of competitors representing the club but they achieved big results. Together they competed in 11 relay races. Each race result counting in points towards overall club placing within one of three divisions. The classification for each club for the division is determined on membership size. Seahorses are in Division 3. Seahorses won their division by a considerable margin. Pictures below the clubs representatives, the all important division three pennant to go on display now at the Boroondara pool and of course a picture at the celebration dinner that evening at Augello's Ristorante & Pizzeria, Whitehorse road Balwyn.

04.01.2022 Congratulations to the Division winners from yesterdays Branch Relay Championships. Division One - Malvern Marlins Masters Swimming Club Division Two - Brunswic...k Belugas Masters Swimming Club Division Three - Surrey Park Seahorses Masters Swimming Club Well done to ALL the swimmers and volunteers yesterday. It was another great fun Meet!!! See more

03.01.2022 Missing the water? Not long now until we can get back in a pool (hopefully!). In the meantime, here's a little something to get your day off to a good start- beautiful Darebin Creek in the sunshine!

02.01.2022 The Open Water Swimming presentation night was well attended considering quite a few people had extended their Easter break holiday to include ANZAC Day and the OWS presentation night weekend. Those that attended once again enjoyed the company of their fellow swimmers, family and friends with the highlight of the evening being the achievement awards. In summary, the major awards were as follow: Classic Competition (Swims under 2km):- Winner on point score Sue Lyons hotly pu...rsued by Dee Greenwood second, and third Tony Sparrow. Enduro Competition (Swims 2km and longer):- Winner on points Sue Lyons and once again just fending off in second place Dee Greenwood and in third place Kelly Paul. A final presentation was an acknowledgement of Dee Greenwood having reached 4 million metres distance swimming. Personally I balk if I have to drive 1 million metres ie. 1,000kms let alone swim 4,000 kms, I would rather pay to take the plane! A few photos from the evening. See more

01.01.2022 This year's Club Christmas Function, a dinner, was held on Saturday 21st December at Vickey's Pizza Restaurant in East Kew. 27 people attended this immensely enjoyable night out, experiencing a near endless supply of good quality, tasty food in the company of their club buddies, family and friends. A few pictures have been attached for viewing but they don't reflect properly the happy vibe and exuberance of the group.

01.01.2022 Tuesday night and training is just as intense as always! Funny the numbers were a little down on the usual. Was it the lightning, the gusting wind or the driving rain that deterred the regulars? One thing we did discover you can actually get cold water shallow pools on the pool surface just like on a footy oval only you're not splashing through them in footy boots - you're swimming through them near butt naked and they are cold! What an incentive to do flash sprints. Mind you at one stage there I should have borrowed George's umbrella to shelter my face whilst doing backstroke so I could manage to breath, it was coming down so hard. On the bright side, when else could we all have had our own lane to use for the whole training session? Hopefully the training numbers will swell back up again next week.
