25.01.2022 Theme for 2020, amiright? Through the struggles, the rumbling with vulnerability, pain, loss, and the full catastrophe, there’s space for courage, hope, healing, and growth. It’s been a year that’s battered people around, shifted the balance, shone light on the divisions and woundings of so many. I feel a shift arising, a circling back to home in the heart, with greater wisdom, joy, and emancipation. #posttraumaticgrowth #yoga #yogatherapy #healing #wellness #brenebrownquotes

25.01.2022 Bookings are open for all classes this week. We are still operating with covid precautions in place which means its essential to reserve your spot, as we have just 6 precious places available in the room. Fortunately theres no limit for our online students, but you still need to book in order to receive your Zoom meeting link. Come and enjoy mindfully moving, breathing deeply and making your inner shift into the energy, hope, joy, peace and renewed perspective of Springtime.

25.01.2022 Nutrition is one of the pillars of our work. We believe food is a powerful tool for connection. What you eat can affect your mind and body, and influence your behaviour, moving you away from or towards, what matters to you. Equally, your states of mind and body are drivers of food choices, some of which may be under your control, but some of which is bigger than individual decision making. Its an area of life that is deeply personal, and is influenced by so many aspects of o...ur history, culture, lifestyle, and community, that it ought not be reduced to simplistic lists of things to eat or not eat. So while we think food matters, we also recognise that you are more than your body, more than the amount of space you take up, more than the effect of gravity on your bones. The interrupted supply chains and subsequent food shortages you may have experienced recently highlights vast, global inequities in socio-economic privilege, and also reminds us that access to adequate food is a human right, which far too many people are excluded from on the daily. Thats just one reason why we think everyday should be #nodietday. Thanks to educators and liberators like Kerry Beake and HAES Australia for always fanning the flames of fairness for all, and creating masterful memes like this one. See more

24.01.2022 Balancing Effort and Surrender Our yoga studio is like a laboratory- a space where you can experiment with your mind and body, and discover your own patterns, capacity, strengths and quirks. In many cases, if we push too hard, try to force a pose or our breath, we lose our equanimity. Yet life seems to reward hard work and effortful striving, so what’s the deal? In yoga philosophy, we learn that abhyasa (steady effort towards a goal) is balanced by vairagya (surrender or dis...passion, letting go). Abhyasa and vairagya are often compared to the wings of a bird - we need both in order to fly. Abhyasa is necessary to get to our mats and practice regularly, to fire the flame of tapas (discipline) and keep it alight, and it’s also the inner effort to stay present with things that may be difficult. Whereas vairagya is essential to mindfulness. Vairagya translates as something like ‘growing pale’ meaning less coloured by raga (passion), more detached, able to observe without reacting, to recognise the transient nature of things. Through these twin forces in balance, we may experience the grace of yoga, a state of consciousness like a ‘transparent jewel’ (Yoga Sutra 1.41) where the mind is absorbed in present moment awareness. #yoga #perthyoga #yogaphilosophy #yogatherapy See more

24.01.2022 Mix of 6: Create an Anti-Cancer Lifestyle is an online educational workshop coming up on Nov 2nd. Suitable for those who have had a cancer diagnosis, carers, health professionals, and anyone seeking to live well and reduce risk of cancer and other chronic illnesses.

24.01.2022 Learn to teach Meditation The benefits of regular meditation are well documented. It is deeply empowering to have skills that with practice, enable greater mastery of your inner world. These skills are much needed in the world, maybe more than ever, and you can be a conduit for your community to make space for reflection, healing, and personal growth that leads to wisdom. This weekend training is open to everyone with an interest in meditation, ideally you have an established... practice for at least a year before you teach, but you can use this training to nourish and inspire yourself and your loved ones, whether or not your goal is to teach. Head over to our training org @wisdomyogainstitute bio for the linktree. #meditation #mindfulness #yoga #zen #buddhism #wisdom #neuroscience #personalgrowth #healing #yogatherapy #onlineteachertraining

24.01.2022 Unconditional positive regard is the ideal starting point for any therapeutic relationship. We see the wholeness and beauty even when you feel broken, maybe especially then. We trust our students and seek to create a space for their self-knowledge and self-trust to grow. Youre enough, just as you are. Whatever youre going through, youve survived hard things before. Youve got this, we are here cheering you on, reflecting back your radiance and wisdom. #yoga #yogatherapy #perthyoga #banksiagrove #selfcare #selfcompassion #community

23.01.2022 When things feel heavy, when life seems stuck in the mud, it takes patience and tenacity to persist. Keep going. There’s a natural flow, a pulse of benevolence in this wondrous universe, that moves us out of stickiness, sorrow, and suffering, but it has its own timing. All is not lost, even when hope is elusive. In the tender, raw spaces, a remarkable force brings us closer to others. When we allow ourselves permission to feel broken, we break open. As Jack Kornfield puts it, ‘When we honour the gate of suffering, what arises is the wondrous power of compassion’. #commonhumanity #joy #love #loss #sorrow #mindfulness #being #yoga #buddhism #compassion #healing #growth #potential #change

20.01.2022 Yoga doesnt end when you get up from savasana. Our privilege allows us to witness each breath. We practice a tradition that arose in South Asia. Our self-study must include looking at what is distressing, abhorrent, unwanted in ourselves and in our society. We are listening. #blacklivesmatter

20.01.2022 We are raising money for Share the Dignity. Join the Surya Health team and help provide period products to people in need.

20.01.2022 If you're anything like me, you seek out content that is relevant, interesting, informative and thought provoking. I listen, watch, and read a vast amount of other people's creative output. One of the many things I've learned in my friendship with Jean Byrne PhD over the years is how to shift gear from being a consumer to being a creator. She's a high energy, super smart, kind woman, who cheers for the underdog, and creates beautiful programs, courses, and content that enhanc...e the world of yoga, and give others courage to also become creative forces in their own ways. She has always been someone who really 'sees' me, and that has given me great confidence to steer my life in the direction I am choosing. Everyone needs at least one friend like this, I'm blessed with a few, and most of that joy and energy remains in my private life, but here is an offering from the hearts and minds of Jean and I, that we hope will speak to you, and support you in your inner and outer work. We hope you enjoy the Peaceful Embodiment Podcast, part of our work @Wisdom Yoga Institute, you can find it on iTunes and Spotify. See more

19.01.2022 Chandrika's latest blog is relevant to the times we are all living through, as she explains Why Trauma Sensitive Yoga Matters and some of what you can expect when you come to Surya Health. https://suryahealth.com.au/why-trauma-sensitive-yoga-matte/

19.01.2022 Join us tonight at 6pm for a Slow Flow vinyasa class with the talented Yoga With Lindsay. Lindsay started teaching here in late 2018, having completed his intensive teacher training with Jean and Chandrika and the team at Wisdom Yoga Institute. He has a gentle yet strong, steady approach and has really developed his style and voice as a teacher. Along with slow flow vinyasa style classes, Lindsay has taught beginners, a summer core strength series, filled in for yin, and hel...ped out with graphic design. Its been an honour to witness Lindsays evolution from dedicated yoga student to devoted yoga teacher. We are so happy to have been a part of incubating his talents, and now the time has come to wish him well on the next chapter. If youve been lucky enough to be in one of Lindsays classes, or even if you havent, please come along tonight and savour the experience. Thanks for everything L, we hope to see you plenty more in future. See more

18.01.2022 At Surya Health we welcome people in all kinds of bodies. We understand that the dominant culture is fat phobic and many of us have long internalised biases about the beauty or acceptability of different bodies. It’s part of our practices to allow, welcome, accept, and care for our whole selves, without shame, hatred, or striving to be different. You are wonderful just as you are. Listen to the Peaceful Embodiment podcast for support, ideas, and thought provoking discussions.

18.01.2022 We welcome people diagnosed with cancer, living with chronic illness, and supporting loved ones, to attend yoga classes in our Banksia Grove studio and online. As part of our work to offer yoga when and where it can be of most benefit, our founder Chandrika Gibson acts as a research and education consultant to not-for-profit organisations.

17.01.2022 Peaceful Embodiment Podcast Did you know we started a podcast? Its part of our @wisdomyogainstitute yogic education collaboration with dear friends and colleagues Jean Byrne and Rob Schutze. This episode features Jean and Chandrika discussing yoga and women, the #metoo movement, our experiences in different lineages, and how we can move forward from the patriarchal guru structures, to a more empowering, equitable, and supportive approach. #yoga #yogatherapy #socialjustice #women #podcast #peacefulembodiment #peacefulembodimentpodcast

16.01.2022 Good mood food might not alleviate all forms of suffering, but if you have choices, nutrient-dense plant consumption makes a world of difference. This weekend, why not eat and move intuitively for mind-body wellness.

16.01.2022 Heard the expression tired and wired? It describes the inner tension we can experience through our nervous system when we have been under chronic stress. The sympathetic branch of the ANS is ready to fight or flee, while the parasympathetic is ready to hibernate. Did you know you have the power to change that situation? What shifts us out of this stress-collapse-stress mode is improving the tone in our ventral vagal nerve complex. Sounds complicated but its really very simple - the hack is conscious rest. Together with my collaborator @Jean Byrne PhD at @Wisdom Yoga Institute we have created a powerful self-healing program you can follow at home, with gentle yoga videos, guided meditations and more. To access your 25% discount use the Code: RestRevolution here https://app.namastream.com/

16.01.2022 Join Lindsay tonight 6pm online from the comfort of your home, for an all levels, beginner-friendly slow flowing yoga class. Youll feel fantastic, have a great nights sleep, and lead into the long weekend feeling calm, clear, and more comfortable in your body. Book via the Surya Health website to receive your zoom link. Pictured is Lindsay and one his favourite things - masala dosa!

15.01.2022 This is #whatayogilookslike and Im happy to use my embodied presence to demonstrate that yoga really is for everyone. You dont need to look a certain way, or have any special abilities. 14.01.2022 Vashishtasana or side plank is a great pose for strengthening the side body including abdominal obliques, deltoids and gluteus medius. Research points to therapeutic benefits for people with scoliosis. The posture is named for the sage Vashishta, known as Ram’s guru and a peaceful, selfless and intelligent teacher. Legends abound about Vashishta’s yoga school on the banks of the river Saraswati. A popular tale depicts Vashishta’s influence over the king Kaushika, who, through... yoga, realised the futility of materialism, renounced all possessions, and became a simple forest ascetic. Practising this posture requires developing strength, balance, and concentration. All skills that help us see clearly, and find balance in our lives. Yoga is a therapeutic art that, when practiced with awareness, inspires personal growth and encompasses our whole selves. Want to learn more? Come along to our small, welcoming classes at @suryahealth , or check out our various workshops, teacher trainings, and podcast @wisdomyogainstitute #yoga #yogamythology #asana #asananames #yogatherapy #lifelonglearning #perthyoga #teachertraining #selfcare #selfdevelopment #radicalselflove #innerlife

14.01.2022 Are you the action woman or man in your home? The solution-seeker, the coordinator of calendars, the bill-payer, organiser, and chief comforter to boot? At work do you shoulder responsibilities willingly, strive for excellence, and to make life easier for others? Where are you in this scenario? Sometimes to gather the pieces of ourselves back together, we need rest, constructive rest, facilitated rest, and some time and space to let ourselves be held for a change. Youre in...vited to experience an hour of being supported in your genuine self-care by attending Yin yoga 6.30pm Tuesdays. Join us in the Surya Health studio, or from home via Zoom. Bookings are open on the website.

13.01.2022 Chandrika and Satyam Sitting in a Tree... Nature bathing has always been a key component in our wellbeing, and a way we stay radically connected with each other. We are fortunate to live amongst the trees, and have daily practices that deepen our awareness. Whether at home or on the road, nature supports our healing as individuals and together. This felt sense of interconnectedness is the uniting theme of our lives and our work. Who we are and what we do are not separate, no...r can we really be separate from nature. For Satyam, supporting people facing the end of life is his calling. His decades of meditation and deep study of the human condition allow him to be wholeheartedly present in the face of death. He’s someone you want around when you or someone you love is dying. And he’s there to help you find meaning after loss. For me (Chandrika), it was a vision in a forest that originally inspired me to study the healing paths of naturopathy and yoga. Part of that vision was teaching and sharing, and that has become my life’s work - the healing power of nature shared through yoga classes, workshops, writing, consulting, training therapists, and cancer research. We have journeyed far both inwardly and outwardly. Practices, understandings, communities, beliefs, have all evolved as we have matured. Now we are engaged in integrative medicine, bringing humanity to palliative care and cancer support. We help people who are suffering, not by ‘fixing’ or removing their pain, but by supporting their wisdom journey, holding space and providing resources for healing. ‘We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time.’ ~ TS Eliot

13.01.2022 Journey to Stillness - https://mailchi.mp/fd4f90b9620d/journey-to-stillness take time to slow down, breathe deep, find stillness this summer with our on demand online classes, or be guided in person in our tranquil studio

13.01.2022 We live and learn on Wadjuk country. Always was, always will be. As a yoga therapy and holistic health practice, we embrace a biopsychosocialspiritual model of health. That means we see health and wellbeing as multidimensional, and people as interconnected with nature, society, and the cosmos. Social determinants of health contribute to chronic illness and the Indigenous people of this country continue to bear the massive health impacts of colonisation. While we can’t change... history, it’s important to acknowledge the past in order to reflect on the ways we do things now and in the future. We hope and work for a culture where all people are equal, and supported to heal. We endeavour to create a trauma sensitive setting where people can find their inner resources for healing. Today marks the anniversary of a major trauma for the people of this land. See more

13.01.2022 Do you experience power surges? Mid-life can certainly be a time of reckoning. The fabulous Casey Conroy (yes, host of my recent podcast interview) has penned a most excellent blog. Yoga, mindfulness, and a balanced lifestyle are all important for balancing the nervous system and moving through periods of change with resilience, hope, and courage.

12.01.2022 Peaceful Embodiment It’s been an overarching theme in my life for some years. Now it’s also the name of one of my favourite creations of recent times. The Peaceful Embodiment podcast is a seeker’s delight. Together with smart, sensitive, compassionate leaders, I’m loving these juicy conversations about big stuff like life, death, pain, privilege, suffering, relationships, boundaries, compassion, ethics, trauma, healing and more. Each guest brings remarkable lived experiences..., wisdom borne of doing their internal work, and messages of hope about how we can grow, heal, learn, act, and become more embodied, more peaceful, and more able to fulfil our sense of purpose. I’m so grateful for the personal growth inherent in this project, and hope it also sparks something wonderful in you. 12.01.2022 We are fully online until June 1st and then you can choose to attend either in studio or online classes. The usual precautions to protect one another will apply - BYO mat and props, book and pay online, wash your hands/use hand sanitiser before and after class, keep 1.5m distance, stay home if you or a member of your household are unwell. We dont think masks will be very nice for yoga but its your choice if you want to wear one. We are so looking forward to welcoming you back to the studio if that suits you, and if youre loving the online option, thats great too. Hope to see you online this week, and maybe in person the following week. Our lovely yoga studio has been empty without you.

12.01.2022 Just a reminder, that yoga is actually suitable for everyone. Try to tune out the body shaming, the superficial, the wackiest of wacky woo (unless youre into that), the nonsense that seems to go along with yoga in some circles. Its a simple yet sophisticated system of movement, breathing, and stillness that brings many benefits, but has to be experienced to be known. Nothing fancy is required or expected. We dont care how you look, your many identities are all welcome, you dont need to be fit, flexible, female or young. We can help make yoga fit you, in all your unique brilliance.

12.01.2022 Our 5 week Beginners Yoga course will run once more for 2020, starting Thursday November 12th. Learn the basics and set yourself up for a calmer, healthier summer.

12.01.2022 Satyam is an essential health professional as a palliative care social worker. Hes mostly kept working through the lockdown but was able to be at home with us over Easter and get into the stay-at-home vibe. Along with music, movies, gardening, yoga and meditation, the space allowed for a rekindled interest in photography. This image of the pond and garden at Surya Health is a testament to how much we have been appreciating this beautiful, natural, nurturing environment. We count our blessings everyday, and cant wait to welcome our community back to this special place. #offthegrid #ecohome #permaculture #natureheals #yoga #socialworker #gratitude #community

10.01.2022 Yoga for Chronic Illness Or we could call it Yoga for Spoonies. What’s a spoonie? Some folx who live with chronic health conditions, refer to themselves as ‘spoonies’. It’s shorthand for understanding the sometimes limited capacity for doing stuff in the world, that can be part of keeping health conditions and symptoms manageable. For many people, a big day out doing stuff is exhausting and requires some quiet time to restore. If you have a chronic illness, that balance may ...be even finer, and doing too much (whatever ‘too much’ is for the individual) causes flare ups of symptoms. So living well with chronic illness requires self awareness, inner resources, and some adaptive strategies. Spoonies may roll their eyes at well meaning suggestions, ‘have you tried yoga?’ but Yoga Therapists are well trained to help. Coming up in Feb-March 2021 is our unique training module Yoga for Chronic Illness, part of our @wisdomyogainstitute IAYT accredited Wisdom Yoga Therapist training. In 4 weekends, you will learn about the prevalence, typical treatments, side effects, symptoms, contraindications and evidence based recommendations for delivering yoga that improves wellbeing for people with arthritis, autoimmune conditions, ageing, trauma, anxiety, depression, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hormonal imbalances, different types of cancer, and life-limiting illnesses. Online and in Perth, so you can join us from anywhere. For a prospectus contact [email protected] See more

09.01.2022 Coming up next month is an opportunity to deepen your own meditation practices, learn more about the historical roots of common practices, and experience meditation from Buddhist, Yogic, and secular origins. Suitable for those who teach or intend to, as well as for personal development.

08.01.2022 Spring Schedule NEW CLASS! We have brought back a 9.30am class on Thursdays, and based on student feedback, this one is an Accessible Ashtanga Mini. If youre not sure what that means, check out the class description below. Essentially this is ashtanga vinyasa-inspired yoga for everyone - its a moderately fast flowing sequence and somewhat athletic - but with some tweaks, it can be made more accessible. So dont be shy, come and try, yes its going to get sweaty, but its doable, and with repetition will give you a sequence you can commit to memory and carry with you everywhere. This is what my own practice looks like a few times a week, and I will help you to make it your own.

05.01.2022 #throwbackthursday to the summer of 2012/13 when I took my family to Mysore, India for a month of intensive Ashtanga yoga. This was part of the journey home when we stayed in a fancy hotel in Bangalore. The boys were totally over it as you can see, but now they have good memories of that trip and the deep family time that happens when travelling together. For me it felt important to see what was happening in Mysore, one of the significant Indian yoga centres. Previously Id b...een drawn to the north and the mysticism of the Himalayan foothills. It was an opportunity to leave other responsibilities and find out what full immersion in the practice felt like. The heat of tapas was transformative and although my physical practice changed a bit, the breakthroughs were actually life-changing. This weekend training draws together different approaches to meditation, the research underpinning effective therapeutic meditation, and develops your skills as a meditator, and as a conduit or facilitator for others. 02.01.2022 If youre anything like me, you seek out content that is relevant, interesting, informative and thought provoking. I listen, watch, and read a vast amount of other peoples creative output. One of the many things Ive learned in my friendship with Jean Byrne PhD over the years is how to shift gear from being a consumer to being a creator. Shes a high energy, super smart, kind woman, who cheers for the underdog, and creates beautiful programs, courses, and content that enhanc...e the world of yoga, and give others courage to also become creative forces in their own ways. She has always been someone who really sees me, and that has given me great confidence to steer my life in the direction I am choosing. Everyone needs at least one friend like this, Im blessed with a few, and most of that joy and energy remains in my private life, but here is an offering from the hearts and minds of Jean and I, that we hope will speak to you, and support you in your inner and outer work. We hope you enjoy the Peaceful Embodiment Podcast, part of our work @Wisdom Yoga Institute, you can find it on iTunes and Spotify. See more

02.01.2022 Opening our Door We closed the doors to you, our cherished clients and friends, some 8 weeks ago, and what a strange time its been. We are particularly fortunate here in WA that the has been well contained. Thank goodness for our remarkable community and our geographic isolation. Restrictions are lifting as of next week May 18th and we are looking forward to a soft reopening with a mix of online and in person classes. If youre part of our closed Facebook group weve asked... for your input there. If youre mostly hanging here on Insta, wed love a quick DM to see which class styles and times youre hoping will reappear on the timetable, and whether you want to come back to the studio (with limited numbers and BYO props) or prefer some online classes to continue. For this week though, we hope to see you online. Bookings as usual via the timetable. 02.01.2022 You are the sky. Everything else is just the weather ~ Pema Chodron Its a wild afternoon here in Perth, not much blue sky to be seen, yet we know its there, beyond the ever changing vista. In our minds, bodies, and hearts, there may be change, upheaval, discomfort, and suffering. Sometimes its hard to connect with the peace within. Our approach to yoga and meditation may allow us to witness the constant flux without getting swept away by our stories. That doesnt mean we never have storms, it means we hope to bear witness to the full expression of life, storms, sunshine, and all. #yoga #mindfulness #perthyoga #gentleyoga #yogaforeverybody #yogatherapy
