25.01.2022 Bede Polding College students give generously Today is Giving Tuesday, and I thought I would share a wonderful story about a group of Year 7 students who are helping refugees by creating a food drive. As the Year 7 Food Drive group at Bede Polding College told me, We are doing this because we as Year Sevens feel sympathy towards the less fortunate and knew that we needed to step up and do something With the help of teamwork and college staff, this idea has been successfull...y brought to life. This is very important because especially at the time of year, the heat, weather and the COVID-19 pandemic have inevitably taken a toll on their already stressful and hard lives. I talked about the initiative yesterday in Parliament. Well done, Year 7! What a wonderful way to help other people. . . . #Charity #FoodDrive #GivingTuesday #MyGivingStory #Education #SecondaryEducation #Schools #Refugees #auspol #Macquarie #Hawkesbury #SouthWindsor

25.01.2022 $1000 GRANT The Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network is offering new grants to help the local community in the wake of the 2019/20 black summer bushfires. The Community Wellbeing Grants aim to support the mental health, wellbeing, resilience and recovery of those affected by the bushfires, allowing communities to choose their own way to respond to the crisis as well as actively participate in the recovery.... The grants will be distributed to individuals not organisations or businesses who were directly impacted by the fires within the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury and Lithgow areas. People can apply for up to $1000 to conduct an activity in their area that meets the guidelines. Have a good idea and want more information? 22.01.2022 Headspace for the Hawkesbury For the first time since I became a Member of Parliament, I will address a motion at Hawkesbury City Council tonight on an issue that prompted me to put my hand up for the job in the first place: improving the mental health of young people. I’m supporting the idea that Council should advocate for a Headspace for the region. After seven years in government, the Liberals have only managed to deliver a satellite service for Katoomba and nothing for t...he Hawkesbury. I have long called for a full Headspace service for the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury so more young people dealing with mental health issues get support early. I know my daughter feels if she’d had access to a Headspace when she was a young teenager it might have made her journey a little easier. We committed to funding for it at the last election. How many levels of government will have to get on board before we see anything delivered for the young people of the Hawkesbury? . . . #Health #MentalHealth #YoungPeople #Youth #Headspace #auspol #Macquarie #Hawkesbury #Windsor #Council #LocalGovernment

21.01.2022 Insurance Australia Group has dropped its support for a NSW Government proposal to raise the Warragamba Dam wall, over concerns the project would damage Aboriginal heritage sites in the Blue Mountains. 21.01.2022 Good luck to the Penrith Panthers as they line up against the Storm in the NRL grand final today! I know there are big numbers of local fans who will be cheering them on today, and I also know that the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury have contributed to the ranks of both teams over the years. Ex-Blaxland High student, Peter Wallace, is a former Panther player and is now with the club as an assistant coach. Former Lower Mountains junior, Tom Eisenhuth, from Springwood, played ...briefly for the Panthers and has been named as No 18 in the Storm side for today. And another former Panthers player, Brad Drew, hailed from Kurrajong. It’s what our local junior rugby league players - boys and girls from Katoomba Devils, Lower Mountains Jrlc, Hawkesbury Hawks, and Windsor Wolves Rugby League Club aspire to. 20.01.2022 It’s been a COVID kind of week

19.01.2022 Covid testing urged for Hawkesbury Analysis of waste water at North Richmond sewage plant has detected fragments of the virus, which means there could be active cases or recently recovered cases nearby. If you live in the Hawkesbury and are feeling unwell, get COVID tested.... 17.01.2022 A year ago, few of us knew where Gospers Mountain was, let alone what impact it was about to have on our lives. Today is the anniversary of the fire igniting, and for many, the recovery has felt exceptionally slow. It's been described as the world's largest bushfire from a single ignition point. All I can say, from my experience, to those battling bureaucracy and runarounds from councils, departments or insurers is that it does get easier.... I can't fathom the long delay between government announcements of assistance and delivery. Nor the inconsistencies between who has received government help in NSW compared to other states. For instance, in our electorate and across NSW, 40 per cent of people who sought help for cleaning up property and land damage were denied, compared to 1-3 per cent in other states. For those of us who didn't suffer direct fire damage, you'd be hard pressed to find a person or small business in the Hawkesbury or Blue Mountains who wasn't affected by the fire or smoke. If you have the energy, this is the second phase of research for the NSW RFS on the experiences of people in our region. It's a detailed survey - they say it will take about 20-40 mins. We want lessons to be learned, so sharing your experience helps. 16.01.2022 We’ve got a dud deal on the NBN. After 7 years, the Morrison Government has suddenly realised fibre to the premises is faster, more reliable and more economical than copper something we knew 13 years ago. But while nearby areas like Castle Hill will be among the first to receive an FTTN fibre upgrade, the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury aren’t on the list. I’ve started a petition calling on the Morrison Government and NBNCo to prioritise the electorate of Macquarie for the f...ibre overbuild, including NORTH RICHMOND, GROSE WOLD, GROSE VALE, KURRAJONG HILLS, KURMOND, MCGRATHS HILL, FREEMANS REACH, WILBERFORCE and PITT TOWN in the Hawkesbury, and LAWSON, BULLABURRA, WENTWORTH FALLS, LEURA, KATOOMBA, MEDLOW BATH, BLACKHEATH and MOUNT VICTORIA. 15.01.2022 No one doubts that support for younger people currently out of work is an absolute necessity at this time, and a wage subsidy is a concept that we have welcomed (in fact, it was our idea). 13.01.2022 A fleet of about 20 coaches came to Parliament today, representing the family-owned independent bus industry. They were driven by operators desperate to keep their businesses afloat, because like other tourism operators (think travel agents) there was nothing to help them in the Budget. 13.01.2022 Today is headspace day. In 2019/20, headspace supported 176 young people in Macquarie to receive mental health and well being support via its online and phone counselling service. But each year, a quarter of all young Australians will experience mental health issues. That means just over 6,100 young people across the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury are affected, according to headspace figures. Let’s show our support for our young people by encouraging them to take small steps ...to help their mental health and wellbring #headspacetips. Get involved by visiting headspace.org.au/tips to see seven simple things you can do every day to help build and maintain mental health and wellbeing. 04.01.2022 PROTECT OUR KOALAS It’s estimated that one-third of the NSW koala population was killed in last summer’s bushfire crisis. The Hawkesbury is home to a burgeoning koala colony, particularly around the Kurrajong Hills and Upper Colo areas, and habitat destruction - whether that’s due to bushfires or development - is the biggest threat to our local population. The National Koala Conservation Strategy, which ran until 2014, is yet to be replaced by this government, and it’s years ...overdue in making Threatened Species Recovery Plan for the koala that was initially due by 2015! I have seconded a motion by Terri Butler MP calling on the Morrison Government to prevent further habitat loss through yet-to-commence development in areas where the species is listed as vulnerable, pending the completion of the formal assessment for up-listing (an increased threatened listing status), the making of a Threatened Species Recovery Plan, and the making of a new National Koala Conservation Strategy. 01.01.2022 There’s around 400 people currently experiencing homelessness in the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury. For months Labor has been calling on the Morrison Government to make significant investment in social housing, and today’s Budget is the chance for them to do that.
