09.01.2022 Remembering 5 fallen RFS Heros Uloola Track Memorial Waterfall 40th Anniversary Commemoration Lest We Forget Tuesday 3rd November 2020 marked the 40th Anniversary of the tragic loss of 5 volunteer Rural Firefighters at the Uloola Track at Waterfall on Monday 3 November 1980. The loss was particularly devastating given how young the volunteer Firefighters were and how sudden and unexpected the loss was on the day. The volunteers were from what was known at the time ...as the Sutherland Shire Headquarters Brigade (now known as Heathcote Headquarters Rural Fire Brigade). On the day the volunteers were on a Fire Truck with the callsign ‘Headquarters 81’. The crew of ‘Headquarters 81’ consisted of: - 26 year old Steve Crunkhorn, a Deputy Captain of Headquarters Brigade, who was also an Electrical Engineer residing in Heathcote. Steve was in charge of the crew that day. - 24 year old Gregory Rolfe, a Banker who lived in Engadine. - 21 year old Vernon Stedman, a wood machinist who lived in Heathcote. - 21 year old William Cummings (Jnr), a gardener who lived in Miranda. And - 19 year old David Marshall, who was also a Deputy Captain of Headquarters Brigade and an electronics technician who lived in Heathcote. To commemorate this tragic event and having regard to COVID restrictions, 2 special memorial services took place at the location of the tragedy on the Uloola Track at Waterfall. The first memorial service was organised by the Waterfall RFS Brigade and took place on the afternoon of Sunday 1 November 2020. On that day members of the Waterfall community and the Waterfall RFS Brigade met at the Waterfall RFS station and after short addresses by Waterfall RFS Captain Brett Taylor & Senior Deputy Captain Glenn Fraser, the group proceeded along McKell Ave and the Uloola Track to the location of the tragedy. The group then paused around the Memorial marking the spot where the tragedy occurred. Here Waterfall RFS Captain Brett Taylor delivered a moving tribute to the fallen volunteer Firefighters. The second memorial service, which was held on the afternoon Tuesday 3 November 2020, was organised by the Heathcote Headquarters Rural Fire Brigade and also took place at the Memorial at Uloola Track. This service was addressed by Keith White, Captain of the Heathcote Headquarters Rural Fire Brigade. This service, 40 years to the day of the tragedy, was particularly moving as it was attended by Trevor Crunkhorn, the younger brother of Steve Crunkhorn, who was in charge of the ill-fated Fire Truck ‘Headquarters 81’. Trevor placed 5 hand waving Australian Flags at the Memorial to remember the fallen.

02.01.2022 Sutherland Shire Historical Society's October meeting was a great success, with 50 attendees, the maximum allowed because of COVID-19 restrictions. Our guest speaker Paul Brunton, OAM, Emeritus Curator, State Library of New South Wales, delivered an entertaining and informative talk, 'Quest for the legendary Great South Land'. Formerly Senior Curator, Mitchell Library, 2002-2012, and Curator of Manuscripts,1986 to 2001, Paul is an expert erudite but informal and approachable.
