21.01.2022 Rotary's work has achieved a significant world milestone. On Tuesday, 25th of August 2020, The Chairperson Africa Regional Certification Commission presented the official Certificate to Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General WHO to declare that Wild Polio Virus type 3 has been eradicated completely in the world. This is historic achievement for humanity and The World is closer than ever to seeing polio disappear for good. Two of three wild poliovirus strains have bee...n eliminated worldwide. The extraordinary milestone event will also be witnessed by the two major partner’s organisation supporting polio eradication Rotarian Holger Knaack, The President, Rotary International and Mr Bill Gates, Co-chair, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Polio eradication Certification for Africa reassure that 90% of the world’s children will be free of the wild poliovirus. In 1988, when Rotary and its partners committed to eradicating the disease, polio paralysed more than 350,000 children per year in 125 countries, or more than 1,000 children per day. Since that time, the number of polio cases has been reduced by 99.9%. The Polio eradication in Africa has come with a cost of loss of life of 9 vaccination women volunteers who were shot during vaccination campaigns in Africa. I pay my homage to those 9 women heroes who sacrificed their lives to save many of the world children from being disabled by Polio Virus. Rotary has contributed nearly US$980 million to eliminate polio in the African region. 09.01.2022 A great reason for being at Sutherland station for the 6.08 am train. Rotary volunteers on the 'Polio Train', going to every station on the Sydney City Rail network (170 stations 813kms) in one day. Sutherland Rotary meeting them for a quick stop presenting a cheque for Polio Plus providing vaccinations. 'We are almost there' with only Pakistan and Afghanistan left with cases of polio. Rotary at work, serving the local, national and international community.
