24.01.2022 Look at these eyes! Model: Snowball, my new foster cat, showing how wonderful amber can look with grey that has golden overtones. She's a beauty. There's so much colour inspiration in nature. ... #coloursofnature #colourconsultant #getyourcoloursdone #catsofinstagram #tenlivescatcentre
24.01.2022 Sketching at the Town Hall to fill in some time and switch my brain into a more relaxed mode. I love all the different shapes and colours and textures in old buildings. #sketching #sketchjournal #watercolourpencils #Hobart
24.01.2022 Delicate shapes and colours remind me that everything is fleeting and that beautiful things are a gift.
23.01.2022 From dream to reality. I went with sketch #3 to make these Oxfords this weekend. My long, skinny feet have rarely had the luxury of shoes that actually fit without extra inner soles and all kinds of making-do and general discomfort. And the idea of having them in exactly the colours I want ... inconceivable (said in a 'Princess Bride' voice). Thanks again to @shoe_making_courses and @mighty_mawd for a fun and very productive weekend of shoe-making.
20.01.2022 Doing some drawings of this impossibly lovely orchid ... I've included a few shots to show the process I use - creating the sketch in ink, then adding shadows, layering colours with watercolour pencils, then wetting the watercolour to activate. Then I sprayed the whole thing with water to let the colours run. Thanks @sophie.carnell for the orchid. xx... #watercolourpencils #sketching #penandwash #beauty #flowers
18.01.2022 I've added a rhubarb flower spike to my lovely blooms from @lisakingstonflowers. It adds interesting texture and colour to these pink and yellow blossoms. #coloursofnature #coloursthatmakemehappy
18.01.2022 I don't read a lot of biographies but I'm enjoying this one a lot. Not only is the book tactile and gorgeous, but the information design and graphic design work beautifully. There are just the right number of images and captions to provide extra details without breaking up the flow. The full-page images of her designs throughout are fabulous. This book motivated me to watch the doco about Florence Broadhurst, but I'm finding that irritating, with lots of quirky and incongruous sound effects and graphics. I think I'll stick with the book. It's from Libraries Tasmania, if you live here and want to put it on hold and get it next. Otherwise your local independent bookshop could get you your very own copy. You do have Xmas coming up, after all.
17.01.2022 Got myself a new 'do, thanks to the wonderful Stella @fusionhairdressing. I'm calling this style modern-retro --> does that make it modro? Retrern? I'm growing it a bit, which means cutting it a bit - so many paradoxes in life! ... If you've had the same hairstyle for more than ten years, unless you're Phryne Fisher, it's possible your hair is just going along for the ride and not actively contributing to your wonderfulness. Is it time to try a new style? Hair can be part of your creative expression. It can also be used to frame your face so people focus on your eyes and mouth and listen to you. I cannot possibly overstate how much I love helping my clients work out how to show their real selves to the world. New hair can be the cherry on top of their new style. I've been known to go along to the salon to watch the transformation. Who doesn't want to see a brilliant before and after? Or to BE a brilliant 'after'? #changeyourhair #snipsnip #styleforthinkers #modernmullet #personalstylist
16.01.2022 Since creativity is about the way you think and what you read and do, as well as what you wear, I’ve signed up for this class on ink painting. Want to join me? It’s at a new space called Oh Oh 9 at 32 Albert Rd, Moonah (Hobart, Australia).
16.01.2022 Come on, Brogue! I've got the Madonna song Vogue in my head while I'm using this nifty broguing tool. It's a lot of fun playing with pattern pieces and different colours of leather doing this weekend shoe making class with Luna @shoe_making_courses.... Hopefully, by tomorrow I'll have a new pair of shoes to show you. #colourmakesmehappy #shoemaking
14.01.2022 Here are some colours you might start seeing in the shops over the next year or so according to Pantone's US Spring/Summer forecast (did you know there was such a thing as colour forecasting?). There are lots of clear and brighter tones, rather than the more earthy, muted warm ones we've been seeing for the last year or so. So, if your palette is one the warmer more muted ones (Intriguing and Enigmatic palettes, I'm talking to you) I reckon you should take advantage of end-of-year winter sales and op shop finds now while your colours are around. Fashions change and colours change. I love the descriptions of some of these colours: 'comforting golden orange' and 'expresses conviviality' ... https://store.pantone.com//fashion-color-trend-report-new-
13.01.2022 I've been missing taking little breaks (and beetling around*) to refuel my creativity. Sketching really helps me to switch off my chitter-chattering brain through looking closely at something and seeing it as a collection of shapes, tones and colours. It also helps me to dull my perfectionistic/fearful impulses by repeatedly getting something on the page, putting a border around it and moving on. I love seeing my style clients go through a similar shift when we look at their ...personal style - there's a switch from judgemental thinking to design thinking. The relief on a person's face when they find this new mode of curiosity about their body is the best thing. There's a real shift as someone changes into a new mental gear and sees their body as shapes, colours, textures. It's powerful and enjoyable to be able to see yourself as a piece of design and choose how you show up in life. 'How do I want people to see me? What kinds of interactions do I want to have?' It's all communication - and there's a two way flow - you feel good, people respond to you, you feel more confident to wear things that look and feel congruent and wonderful, other people reflect back your confidence, you enjoy having colour and texture and beauty in your life ... It compounds. Back to the beetle and sketching ... I can teach you how to switch on your own kind of design thinking with my easy sketch noting method. I'm planning dates for workshops to show you how to capture simple daily observations and ideas using ink and watercolour pencils, to switch off your inner critic and start seeing the world around you in a new way. If your brain tells you that you 'Can't Draw' - like mine still does - I've designed my workshops for you. Brains sometimes earnestly try to keep us from 'danger', even when we're doing something harmless or enjoyable. I'm lining up dates to run some more in-person workshops soon in Hobart, Tasmania (Aust). DM me or keep an eye out here for more info. I also offer one-on-ones or small group sessions by request. *I found this beetly little beauty in the TMAG's 'Around the world in 80 Objects' display in their Central Gallery.
12.01.2022 Non-violent punching. My shoes are coming along ... @shoe_making_courses... #shoemaking #colours
11.01.2022 Gorgeous colours and tempting warm woolies at a market stall on a cool morning. Get yourself down to the Salamanca Markets and don't forget to swing by the fabulous @spacebargallery while you're down here.
11.01.2022 I'm having a crack at fashion illustration with live models tonight. I think the wine is helping. Or is it!? It's so helpful to get tips for improving my figure sketches. It's so hard not to focus on details. #trynewthings... #watercolours #watercolorpainting #fashion Thanks to @betty.nolan.756 and @keshetdesign for a brilliant event.
10.01.2022 Here’s a preview of upcoming spring colours from an Australian brand I really like - there’s a slightly warm pink, mid-toned emerald green and pretty blues. I’m looking forward to see these lighter colours for spring. I don’t get any benefit from endorsing this company - I just like their things. They have nice styles that suit a range of different body shapes, their fabric has a soft and substantial hand (hand is the feel of a fabric against your skin) and their garments wash and wear well. https://www.bamboobody.com.au/blog/spring-preview/
07.01.2022 This seems unlikely.
07.01.2022 Thinking about getting a fringe? Here's some inspiration. I'm beside myself about how cute these Highland cows are. ... Today I'm on a surprise visit (belated birthday present) to Highland Getaway at Ranelagh, Tasmania. Apart from being my favourite kind of cow to look at, these ones let you brush them too! Julie's driving us all over her property to show us the livestock and tell us how things work. What a gorgeous part of the world. Come and check it out. Did I mention COW BRUSHING!? @highlandgetawaytas #highlandcow
06.01.2022 These are the colours that made yesterday's blonde haired, blue eyed client look amazing. While she can wear anything from her palette, these were the ones that particularly make her eyes, skin and lips look wonderful, with or without makeup. I loved discussing how she can choose the colours she wears to suit different contexts of her life - doing bodywork with clients and teaching young people. Sometimes you dress to put others at ease, sometimes you need to be seen and hea...rd, sometimes you want to feel bright and joyful. What you wear can change the way you're perceived and the way you feel - it's a positive cycle. If you'd like to find colours that lift you up, let me know. I love doing groups of two or three, so that's a great option for a fun few hours to gain skills and confidence that'll last you a lifetime. #colours #getyourcoloursdone #personalstylist #styleforthethinkers
04.01.2022 I love Before and After pix. I also love Super Cobbler at Moonah (Hobart, Tasmania, Australia). I reckon it's well worth getting your favourite things repaired and keeping them for as long as possible. Who'd have believed these could be salvaged? Love your local makers and repairers and give them your business - they need you and you really need them.
02.01.2022 It's not quite a magnolia pink, but this is one of my favourite pinks (new a-line dress from @smittenmerino). Aaah, so wonderful to get my legs out on a warm spring day (spring = windy here in Tasmania). This winter has felt like a lonnnnnggg one. It feels great to get a little sun. I'd never have chosen to wear pink before I had my colours 'done' and saw for myself which colours loved me back. The process of trying all the colours and seeing in the mirror which ones worked... (and which didn't) and learning the colour theory to know why that was, was a complete revelation. I can help you to uncover your own kind of cool and find your best colours online or in person if you're in Tasmania. DM me for more info or check my site via my Insta bio. Regardless of where you sit or move between on the masc-androg-femme spectrum, I'd love to help you to look like a positive, vibrant version of yourself. #springadingding #coloursthatmakemehappy #findyourbestcolours #personalstylist #discoveryourkindofcool #Hobart #Tasmania
02.01.2022 If you're looking to brighten up your look, and how you feel and how other people respond to you, this great article from the brilliant Imogen Lamport breaks down what to wear so you look (and, incidentally, feel) more vibrant on your Zoom calls. The same tips will help you to choose what to wear for meetings, for photos, when you're presenting to groups and to change your mood in general ... I'm currently booking appointments with clients who want to develop their own kind of cool, to find out what kinds of colours and styles work for their hair and body and colouring right now. Contact me if you'd like to spend a couple of hours to learn the skills to choose things you love and that love you back. Learning to see yourself as design is profoundly creative and lets you be confident in your body, now and as life changes.
02.01.2022 '... I've never been to me ...' This song sprang (sproinged?) into my head this morning. I reckon lots of us lose track of who we are at times, then we spend time feeling crappy about lost opportunities or a body that's changing or interests we never followed up on. I'm around over the coming couple of weeks if you want to chat about doing some sessions together, so you can visit the You that you are right now. I'll show you how to apply design thinking to observe yourself - ...no psychological fossicking - to disengage your critical mind and slip into a more creative and constructive gear. All of my clients want to express their personality and regain a sense of joyful exploration with the body they live in right now. Most of them are logical and want a process they understand. That's how my brain works too. We spend time together on video calls and email and they learn to see themselves as design, so they can find colours that look good with their natural colouring, fabrics and styles that make them happy, proportions that work, outfits that they can throw on that make them feel like a freaking superhero ... I help them work out how to create their own kind of cool, their own personal style. These are skills for life - as things change you'll be able to reuse the basics we've discussed and decide how you want to look and feel. Once you've started thinking about creativity and learned to look at your exterior with interest and enjoyment, you might want to expand the same kind of thinking to identify the skills and interests that give you a buzz, and look for ways to use these in your work-life. You might want to start or go back to a hobby or craft that feels deeply good in your marrow. In my creativity sessions I coach people in writing and sketching, or help them to make a do-able plan to include their own kind of creativity in their life. I've been told that having me as an accountability buddy makes a big difference. The Xmas/New Year's period is often a time of reflection. If you want my cheery and practical help to develop a new relationship with your appearance and your creativity, starting with finding your own kind of style, send me a message here or book a free Zoom call through my website. I only work with a couple of clients at a time, usually over a month or so, so it's great to talk first and see if we're a good fit. Everything I offer is based on design principles that you can apply to any creative endeavour. Colour, scale, contrast, repetition etc. If you're looking for some guidelines to follow, I'm your gal. If you're not going away on holiday this year, why not spend some time and money to 'visit' yourself, ie become genuinely interested in and comfortable with how you look + find ways to refuel yourself creatively? I bet you have everything you need already. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SZgIk2b68gQ
