25.01.2022 Middle of May already and I have been so busy getting ready for the Castlemaine Jazz Festival in early June, that I have not yet sent out my May newsletter. In fact, May is an unusual month because, instead of Breakout's regular gig at Farouk's Olive, we will be playing at a private function. As a result, you will not be able to catch Breakout in May. However, do not despair! There will be several opportunities to catch the band and my playing in other bands in June. Sunday, ...June 4, 1-3pm, "Black Pearl" (Jazz and blues featuring vocalist Christine Manetta) at The Open Studio, 204 High Street, Northcote. I will be involved with three bands at the Castlemaine Jazz Festival as follows: Saturday, June 10: 1pm: "SMS" (Suzanne, Mike and Stan - a piano trio playing mainly tunes by Thelonious Monk) at the venue called "Run Rabbit Run". 3pm: "SMS" again, this time at Christ Church (Grand piano and beautiful acoustics) 5pm: "Breakout" (saxophone quartet playing modern jazz) at the Maurocco Bar 7pm: "Jan Blake's Body and Soul" (Mainstream vocal jazz) at the Cumberland Hotel 9pm: "Laureen Thompson and her trio" (jazz vocals with piano trio featuring Tim Nelson) at Run Rabbit Run Sunday, June 11 6pm: "Breakout" at the Criterion Hotel 7pm: "Laureen thompson and her trio" at the Criterion Hotel. June 24: "Breakout" at our regular 5-7pm spot at Farouk's Olive, 711 High Street, Thornbury. Hope to see you at one or many of those gigs.
23.01.2022 July looks like an interesting month for me: I have my usual monthly gig with "Breakout" on July 22nd (at Farouk's Olive, 711 High St, Thornbury) and I also have three gigs with "Black Pearl". On July 15 at 5pm at the Brunswick Hotel, on July 28th at Basco from 8pm (307 Sydney Rd, Brunswick), and then on July 30, 8pm at The Open Studio (204 High St, Northcote). So, hope to see you at one of those gigs.

05.01.2022 July is going to be a very busy month for me and my bass guitar. The regular monthly gig for "Breakout" at Farouk's Olive will be on July 22 (from 5 to 7pm). Another evening of swinging and soulful modern jazz played by Colin Garrett on Sax, Peter Ryan on guitar, Steve Bray on drums and myself on bass. Just $5 to get in and a very congenial bar. So come and join the fun. And I am also in another band called "Black Pearl". It features Christine Manetta on vocals, Dusan Dosen ...on guitar, Bruce Madigan on drums, Ian Noble on keyboards and myself on bass. We play the songs made famous by blues mamas in earlier times - singer like Bessie Smith, Big Mama Thornton and Aretha Franklin. "Black Pearl" will perform as follows: July 8 - private party at Grumpy's Green in Fitzroy. July 15 - Brunswick Hotel (corner of Sydney Road and Weston Street, Brunswick) from 5pm till 8. Free entry, limited seating. This program will feature songs made famous by Nina Simone. July 28 - Basco Bar (307 Sydney Road, Brunswick) from 8pm till late. Free entry and all the pintxos you can eat. July 30 - Open Studio (204 High Street, Northcote). Support act at 8pm and then two sets from 8.45. $5 entry and all the crepes you can eat! If I keep going at this rate I will have to begin thinking of myself as a musician rather than as a retired philosophy professor!
