25.01.2022 Fittingly, celebrations for the opening of St Vincents carried on for most of 1970 and culminated in a ball on 16 October, hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary in th...e school hall. Sadly, the archives hold no photos from what must have been a glittering occasion. An official opening was held just prior, on Sunday 11 October, when the Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn, the Most Reverend T.V. Cahill, blessed the school and convent Orana (now the Parish Centre). The community was invited to tour both buildings after the ceremony. No doubt the crowds marvelled at the state-of-the-art classrooms equipped with chalkboards, globes, Cuisenaire rods and Perkins Paste. The Canberra Times reported that the school cost $500,000 to build and opened with classes from kindergarten to Year 3. A cohort of nearly 140 was comfortable in a building designed to hold more than 400 students. By 1971, the bounty produced by the families of Belconnen put that limit to the test with an enrolment of 420 students, 200 of whom were destined for St Matthews at Page when it opened in 1972.

24.01.2022 St Vincents first annual report warmly stated that parents are always welcome to discuss matters with the class teachers or principal. Parents were also welc...ome as volunteers, and they answered the call in teams supervising playtime while the staff ate lunch and acting as cleaners during the first term in the new building. Parents were also the transport for class excursions driving groups in convoy to the R.A.A.F. base the T.V. Studio the Mint and a day at a Farm. St Vincents became the heart of a community and, as one Mum remembered, We worshipped each Sunday in the hall and we attended the school every other day it seemed, for tuckshop duty, sports days, tree planting or sweeping the hall for Mass. The same hall also rang with laughter and good fellowship at the many social and fundraising activities that a vigorously growing community generated.
23.01.2022 Dear Parents In line with the Minister, I am strongly encouraging students to be at home where supervision is available. St Vincents will be open for children whose families are not able to provide supervision, especially those who provide essential services to the community. Teachers are working hard to compile a remote learning platform and learning packs. My newsletter tomorrow will have further information. Students who remain at school will also participate in the remot...e learning program so no child is disadvantaged by remaining at school or being at home. I thank you for your continued support during this time of uncertainty. Lina Vigliotta See more

22.01.2022 The Seventies. If there was a more stylish cohort of primary school teachers in an Australian school in the 1970s, Id like to see the evidence. Id also like t...o know who they are. Weve heard what they did, in sometimes very difficult circumstances. Now tell me who they are. Lets give these women the honour of a name. #KnowMyName See more

19.01.2022 What to do if youre being bullied? Theres always something you can do. - Talk to an adult you trust straight away and keep talking about it if you are still upset later. - Have someone help you report the bullying to someone who can do something about it - Keep your distance from bullying... - Dont bully them back - Tell them what they are doing is not ok - Take time to do something nice for yourself Physical bullying Physical bullying includes hitting, kicking, tripping, pinching and pushing or damaging property. Physical bullying causes both short term and long term damage. Verbal bullying Verbal bullying includes name calling, insults, teasing, intimidation, homophobic or racist remarks, or verbal abuse. While verbal bullying can start off harmless, it can escalate to levels which start affecting the individual target. Cyber bullying Cyber bullying can be obvious or secretive bullying behaviours using digital technologies including hardware such as computers and smartphones, and software such as social media, instant messaging, texts, websites and other online platforms. Cyber bullying can happen at any time. It can be in public or in private and sometimes only known to the target and the person bullying. (Published by 6 Yellow)
18.01.2022 Sport. The great leveller and bringer together. It didnt take long for St Vincents to hit its stride and make an entry into the hot-house atmosphere of school... sports. Whether it was at a Catholic Carnival or in a local club competition, St Vincents increasingly had the numbers to field a team. Or several teams. What was more surprising, in todays era of the 24-hour news cycle, was the enthusiasm of the local paper to report on our sporting endeavours. Readers of the Canberra Times in 1972 were surely delighted to learn that Children from St Vincents School, Aranda, held their first athletics carnival at Aranda Oval on Sunday and, importantly The house competition was won by the Red team, the Gold team was second, the Green team third and the Blue team fourth. For two years running, in 1974 and 1975, the papers crack team of journalists informed the Canberra community of the highs and lows of carnival day, including another novelty race at the school where participants had to bunt a small ball along the ground with their heads. 18.01.2022 Unfortunately we won't have a Harmony Day assembly but we hope to see as many students as possible dressed up in their cultural clothing. Harmony Week celebrates Australias cultural diversity. At St Vincent's we value inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.... (Published by 6 Yellow Students)
17.01.2022 Last week kindergarten practised their addition and subtraction skills in the hall which was set up as a supermarket. Who was going to have enough money for the weekly shop and how much change would they need? Today they preformed a range of science experiments around sinking and floating.
16.01.2022 HEY BULLIES LISTEN UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is not okay to bully people at St Vincents Primary. Bullying does not make you look cool or make you feel better about yourself in the long run. The only thing bullying does is hurt other peoples feelings. If people bully you, speak up and tell a trusted adult like the teacher on duty, your classroom teacher and your parents. Dont put up with it. People bully because they are sad and may be jealous of you. (Published by students of 6 Yellow)
16.01.2022 We started off with a bang on our first two days of our fun-filled Science Week. All week Year 6 will be leading recess clubs and teaching the other students about the different areas of STEM. On Monday we focussed on experiments and science. We had exploding apples, writing with invisible ink and eating yummy sherbet.
15.01.2022 We hope you enjoyed the announcement in the newsletter today! Get ready for Zoom conference previews which will start popping up on the google classroom and parent's emails soon. The teachers have been working hard to develop digital learning plans and the home learning curriculum. We would like to thank families for their support, patience and encouragement. Here is a little hint of what is to come.

03.01.2022 This afternoon in Vinnies Learners we looked at how a good learner succeeds. The challenge was to set goals, use feedback, 10 pieces of paper and 15cm of tape to create the tallest freestanding tower. How can we support each other and how can we celebrate success while still being humble?
02.01.2022 St Vincent’s leadership began with a flurry of nuns. Seven sisters and two orders rotated through head office in the first twelve years. Were the hard-bitten ch...ildren produced in Belconnen in the 1970s responsible for the rapid turnover of senior staff? Or was there divine intervention at work? Who knows. But it was a revolving door at the top: 1970: Sister Antoinette (Society of Jesus) 1971: Sister Noella (SoJ) 1972: Eileen Fergus (acting) 1973: Sister Doreen (SoJ) 1975 (May): Sister Jane Frances (SoJ) 1976: Sister Columba (Sister of St Joseph) 1977: Sister Regina (SoSJ) 1980: Sister Clare (SoSJ) Stability came with the first lay principle, Mary Uhlmann, in 1982 and tranquillity has reigned for the 38 years since: 1982: Mary Uhlmann 1990: Kate Jones 1994: Tim Boynton 1997: Helen Currie (acting) 1998: Douglas Hodgson 2004: John Vance 2011: Marg Koenen 2016: Lina Vigliotta My time at St Vincent’s ended in 1983, so this entry ends during Mary Uhlmann’s principalship. It also seems like a good point to finish this history, which has been a pleasure to share. It’s incomplete and light on facts and figures, but hopefully fit for purpose to trigger some memories and rekindle a connection with a special school. And don’t forget, if there are photos or stories you’d like to share, we’ve got room for them all. Just get in touch.
02.01.2022 Welcome to the history of St Vincents. Over the next few weeks well share posts that outline the history of this wonderful school. If you, too, have memories ...and photos to share, let us know in the comments, or visit our History page (https://www.svdp.act.edu.au/our-school-history) on the St Vincents website. A school at the shops In November 1969, readers of the Canberra Times were told that there was Space in RC schools for the children of Pearce and Aranda. Two new Catholic primaries were scheduled to open in March 1970. The rain and hail that fell throughout the following December and January, however, brought flooding and mud to the ACT. It was clear that neither school would be ready by March. With the new suburbs of Aranda, Cook and Macquarie overflowing with children, something had to be arranged for their education. So, early in the new year, Sr Antoinette of the Society of Jesus, Mary and Joseph the first principal of St Vincents wrote to parents with the news, we will not be able to start the new school year at Bindel St. . Instead, the school would open in temporary accommodation at the Jamison Centre (in the building that now houses the YMCA). And so it was that 83 junior residents of Canberras newest district, Belconnen, were handed over by their delighted parents to the tender care of Sr Antoinette and her colleagues Sr Jane Frances, Mrs Gillis and Miss Glass.
