18.01.2022 The electrical profession is a great place to be. Engineer or Sparky, you just never know whats the day will bring. Recently we highlighted issues around poor knowledge and skills in terminating flexible cables, and here is yet another example of how not to do it. Lug sized for 70mm cable crimped on what looks to be a 95mm possibly 120mm class 5 flexible cable. Just hack some strands off and bingo she fits now. Would have loved to have seen a thermal image of this under wh...en connected under full rated current. Red hot! For flexible copper cables up to 185mm it is recommended to use normal hex crimp dies to suit the cable cross sectional area. Cables 240mm and above, it is recommended to use the next size up lug, so a 300mm lug. The lug should be crimped using 300mm hex dies, after which you remove one die and replace it with the die to match the cable size; a 240mm die. This technique is known as an oblique crimp. But, and there is a big but, crimp lugs are designed for full sized cross sectional area of copper. With undersized cables that are prevalent the crimp compaction requirement can be considerably below what is necessary to form a correct compaction of the lug onto the cable. 16.01.2022 At switches Plus we listen and make things better with our electric cables sheathed with Polyurethane (PUR). These cables are designed with the toughest and most demanding environmental conditions in mind, like -40C to +125C. PUR is seriously difficult to cut or tear. It is low smoke and halogen free, so ideal for safety cables for use on constructions sites and in tunnels.
