18.01.2022 Silver Wattle is redoubling efforts to establish a resident community of 3 to 5 people to live at Silver Wattle for a period of 8-24 months. One of these people will be the Centre Coordinator who will have prescribed duties, but the others will simply be resident volunteers who contribute to the life of the community at Silver Wattle. In addition to full time residents, we will continue to encourage short term (2-6 week) Friends in Residence (FiRs) to support busy periods and other times when the community might need some extra support. If you are interested in living at Silver Wattle as one of 3 to 5 full time residents or as the Centre Coordinator please contact the Clerk [email protected] or visit the website on https://www.silverwattle.org.au/volunteering

05.01.2022 Quaker Martyrs Today we remember the Quaker Martyrs. On 27 October in 1659 the first of the Quaker Martyrs, William Robinson, was hanged from an Elm Tree on Boston Common. ... The Martyrs were protesting against the restrictive religious laws of the Puritan governors of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was followed up the ladder by Marmaduke Stephenson. The next in line, Mary Dyer, was reprieved at the last minute, but then returned and was executed in 1660. In William Robinson's words: The streams of my Father’s love, run daily through me The streams of my Father’s love, run daily through me from the holy fountain of life, to the seed throughout the whole creation This is commonly sung alternately with the parallel words: The streams of my Mother’s love, run daily through me The streams of my Mother’s love, run daily through me from the holy fountain of life, to the seed throughout the whole creation Listen to samples of Paulette Meier on https://www.paulettemeier.com/wellsprings-of-life-cd1.html David Johnson, with photos from Anne Felton and Jim Palmer.

04.01.2022 Standing in the forest alone and listening to the deepest voice in the heart: Stephen Grellet (2/11/1773-16/11/1855) was a Quaker travelling minister. Once, when Grellet was travelling in the woods of Pennsylvania which were at that time wilderness, he passed through a camp of lumbermen, men noted for their lawlessness and dishonesty. When Grellet reached home, a voice was heard in his own heart, saying distinctly but very gently, so that only he could hear it, "Go back there... and preach to those lonely men." He rode all the way back, three days through the wild forest from the nearest town, moved to share with these rough and rude lumberjacks the message that he knew from his own experience: how completely God's love could change a person's life. But when he reached the lumber camp, he found it deserted. Standing all alone in a deserted lumber camp deep in the wilderness, he preached aloud into the empty space, or perhaps to the trees and the squirrels. And then he turned and rode back home again, having done all he could do. Six years later, Grellet was in England, bringing his message to prisons, hospitals, and slums in London. One evening, as he was crossing London Bridge, he was seized by a strange man who began shouting, "I've found you at last!" This man was one of the lumberjacks from the camp. On the day Grellet preached to the empty camp, that one man had returned to fetch some tools, and heard the whole message. It inspired him so much that he repeated it to all the other lumbermen, so that many of them were inspired, too, and the whole camp changed its atmosphere.
