22.01.2022 2020 Victorian Hygain Dressage Festival had Northern Finnlaigh competing in both the preliminary and novice championships. Placing 4th & 5th in the preliminary on Thursday with overall placing of 4th in the championship. Placing 10th in both Novice tests and finishing 9th overall in the championship on Saturday. Finnlaigh only still in his first competition season since arriving at the beginning of the year couldn’t make us more proud. He takes each outing on board and get...s better each time. Young horses let you know when they’re ready and this boy has shown us that he’s capable. My thanks to Jan and Peter Powles at Northern Warmbloods for entrusting Finnlaigh to me thus giving me the opportunity to bring this amazing youngster along. My coach and mentor Janelle Bean-Thornton and your family from Lucifers Lodge Performance Horses thankyou for your guidance and help not only over the last two weeks leading into the champs but for the last 12 months with this youngster. Kayla, again an amazing job as I appreciate everything as your help made the competition easier. My friends and family your ongoing support is amazing and greatly appreciated. A huge thanks to Dan Wills from DK Wills Master Farrier and Sam Pate from Sporthorse Acupuncture and Myotherapy for the amazing work you do for Finnlaigh as without you he wouldn’t be the horse he is. Now we head on towards the 2021 season with Finnlaigh and some new additions to the VAL Performance Team.

22.01.2022 Today saw the beginning of an amazing start to Northern Finnlaigh’s official dressage career. Stepping out at the Lakes and Craters Dressage Fundraiser in the Preliminary and Novice classes on his 7th birthday. With a start in the Novice 2A to finish mid field on a neat score of 65% he then proceeded to claim victory in both Preliminary tests with scores 72% and 73%. One judge had him on a score of 75% which was an amazing result. My sincere thanks and appreciation to Jan ...and Peter Powles for giving me such an amazing opportunity to bring on such an amazing youngster as without you this would never have been possible. To my coach friend and mentor Janelle Bean-Thornton and your team at Lucifers Loddge, you’ve not only whipped me into shape as a rider, but you’ve made me realise that time is precious and slow and steady wins the race. To Andrew James thank you for coming along today to assist as having you along to help and to be my eyes on the ground was undoubtedly more valuable than anyone could realise. To my support crew of friends and family Nathan and Emily, Andrea, Vicki, Shelley, and many others who assist thank you for your support and words of wisdom. A huge thanks to Dan Wills @ DK Wills Master Farrier for keeping Finnlaigh shod to perfection, Sam Pate for your amazing body work on Finnlaigh as without you he’d never be so needy for treats and scratches. Most of all I give my greatest thanks and appreciation to Northern Finnlaigh, you are my sanity, my freedom and my friend. A few pics taken from the videos as there wasn’t an official photographer there today. #eqsaddlerykilmore #dkwillsmasterfarrier #jewelequestrian

20.01.2022 Christoph Hess on the emergence of the new modern dressage horse: The better the movement of the horse, the better rider you have to be. If you think all you h...ave to do is buy a horse in Europe with wonderful movement, and you won’t have to learn to ride it, you are wrong. Big gaits are more difficult to ride, piaffe is easier than extended trot to ride. I see top horses after a few years, weeks or even days with a rider that is not balanced or supple, and they go down. Riders often don’t realize that they are using their reins to balance their body. https://www.horsemagazine.com//christoph-hess-talks-about/ See more

13.01.2022 Come to a Young Horse Seminar with experts like Hans Heinrich Meyer zu Strohen: Right from the beginning, the contact must be absolutely clear. First on both ...reins equally, then more to the outside rein. Try to get the reins a little longer, work on the rhythm and the position of her neck. If you get the neck too high, then later you have problems if you ride them this way, you don’t need a vet. We just want her to canter forward later we will make her straight. https://www.horsemagazine.com//the-young-dressage-horse-i/ See more

06.01.2022 Jo Hinnemann on training young horses: Training should have nothing to do with developing an extended trot, that is a movement that you develop. A three-year-o...ld cannot do an extended trot. The only thing you can do is show talent and they can show talent when they do working trot well, through the whole body and a little bit of lengthened stride. The main thing, in young horse classes is to remember that success can still be achieved with CORRECT training https://www.horsemagazine.com//tips-from-the-top-jo-hinne/ See more

04.01.2022 Evening hack outs after working on the arena are great for young horses to unwind and to gain exposure

04.01.2022 Monica Theodorescu, Germany’s dressage coach tells us: There are a lot of riders who sit well on a horse, and you think they are quite educated riders, but a l...ot of them don’t know what they are doing on a horse: what aids they are giving, they are not so conscious of what they are doing or what they want to do. They are not sure what they aim for on that day. We should say, today I want to work on this, and achieve this, more suppleness on the left or the right. They just ride along and do some exercises without really having in mind ok, diagonal and straightness: get the bending, get the outside rein, where is my inside leg?
