24.01.2022 Lots of people were enjoying the sunshine along the Bay Run. We walked around the bay to discover some interesting historic rock carvings of a ship near Callan Park Asylum.

24.01.2022 Great view from Sublime Point in the Illawarra region

21.01.2022 Program Cancellation You may have seen the announcement by the Prime Minister last night that there is a total ban on all outdoor sporting and recreation group activities. This unfortunately means the complete cancellation of all activities in the current program from today until further notice. The committee has decided that under the circumstances it would be good to suspend club membership fees for the time being. We will automatically add 12 months to everyones membershi...p e.g. if you were due to renew June 2020 you will now renew June 2021. The clubs finances are in good health and we can still pay our insurance for both this year and the next without difficulty. This does not mean that you are no longer members of the club, but we hope that this action will reduce a tiny piece of the financial stress that many must be feeling. Some of our members are in difficulties with loss of employment and others may be anxious about the future. I urge you to trust God and pray for each other in these uncertain times. You may not be able to attend club activities, but keep in touch with other members by phone and email. Psalm 62:8 Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.

21.01.2022 The bushwalking program re-commenced with a socially distanced walk around Lime Kiln Bay and Oatley Park. Although it was overcast, there was only a brief shower while we ate lunch under a poolside picnic shelter, enjoying scenic views over the Georges River. The weather was a little too chilly to entice anyone to swim. The day finished with a coffee before strolling back to Oatley Station.

21.01.2022 Interesting aboriginal carving of a whale, seen on the Harbour Circle Walk.

20.01.2022 Saturdays BBQ at Audley in the Royal National Park to celebrate Leonies birthday was in two parts. Sausages were cooked and everyone was enjoying food and fellowship in the big picnic shed beside the river. A few police vehicles and a fire truck passed our way and there seemed to be an increasing amount of traffic headed out of the park. Not long after this the police arrived, informing us the park was being evacuated due to a major bushfire in the vicinity. We packed up a...nd retired to a delightful park in Engadine for part two of the celebration, where we devoured delicious cheesecake and not one but two birthday cakes. The smoke plume in the distance was huge, and we spotted the big orange water helicopter overhead, en route to douse the fires. The fire raged all night and into the next day. It was a timely reminder that we should always check the RFS website for fire activity in summer, and have an exit strategy planned for a walk, as you never know what might happen. See the Daily Telegraph for some dramatic photos of the fire. https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au//ce048214c43f94d9353b070

20.01.2022 The next section of the Bushwalkers Code talks about preserving bushland by being aware of the problems caused by spreading pests and diseases. WE PRESERVE AUSTRALIAS BIO-SECURITY We seek to protect the natural environment from the negative impacts of pests, diseases and weeds. We clean our clothing, equipment, cars, wheels and vessels to prevent the spread of pathogens and diseases that threaten bio-security.... We report significant or unusual pests, diseases and weeds. 19.01.2022 Bushwalkers everywhere are saddened by the loss of historic Binna Burra Lodge last weekend, when it was almost completely destroyed by bushfire. Nearby OReillys Lodge was also evacuated when the fire threatened to block access to the site. Both lodges are surrounded by lush rain forest of the Lamington National Park. Binna Burra hopes to rebuild. See more at https://www.abc.net.au//queensland-bushfire-emerg/11499472

19.01.2022 Easter is almost here. The event is more than just a long weekend off work. On Sunday we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

19.01.2022 Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Wishing our members a blessed and prosperous New Year in 2020

19.01.2022 Easter edges closer. Many Christians will celebrate Palm Sunday this weekend on April 14. This is to commemorate the day Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey, welcomed by palm-waving crowds that would soon turn against him.

18.01.2022 More digital walks to enjoy from the comfort of your sofa. Heres a great walk in the USA in Yosemite National Park. The rangers showcase amazing scenery, but stress the importance of preparing for a safe walk and choosing an activity within your capabilities. https://www.nps.gov/media/video/view.htm

16.01.2022 Everyone wants to return safely from a bushwalk. The Bushwalkers Code sets out some great ideas for planning a safe bushwalk. We take responsibility for acting safely We always carry clothing and equipment appropriate to our planned activity We carry first aid kits and are trained in first aid appropriate to our activities.... We do not rely solely on GPS systems, but carry a map and compass, which we know how to use. We do not rely on mobile phone coverage for dealing with an emergency, but carry a Personal Locator Beacon and/or satellite phone when appropriate. We prepare an exit plan as part of our emergency planning. We check the safety status of our destinations before entering, observe the safety instructions of park rangers, and do not enter closed National Parks. We advise appropriate authorities, friends or relatives of our walking plans We walk in groups of three or more so that there are sufficient people to summon help in an emergency. We keep emergency contact details updated on our club website We only light fires when it is safe to do so, and ensure they are fully extinguished. We ensure the safety and wellbeing of all children entrusted to our care on a bushwalk. We engage in bushwalking activities unimpaired by the consumption of alcohol or use of drugs. See more

16.01.2022 As the new year dawns, we pause to make plans and New Years resolutions. While these are worthwhile, positive actions, God has even better plans for our lives if we put our trust in Him. With Christ in our hearts we can look to the future with hope. The Committee wish all Bushies members a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

14.01.2022 LETS GO VIRTUAL WALKING What lovely sunny weather today. Its a pity we cant go on a bushwalk together, but check out this walk online. Todays virtual walk is one that will never appear on a Bushies program. Known as Spains most dangerous path, or the most dangerous walkway in the world, the Caminito del Rey (The Kings Little Pathway) is over 100 years old and 100 meters high. This scary concrete trail winds through steep limestone cliffs near the small village of El Cho...rro and into a hidden valley. The walkway was built to provide workers a means to cross between the hydroelectric power plants at Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls, to allow for transport of materials, and facilitate inspection and maintenance of the channel. Construction began in 1901 and was finished in 1905. The walkway was partially closed for over a decade following five deaths in 1999 and 2000, and after watching the first 3 minute video you will know why. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maBV_XFlA1s After four years of extensive repairs and renovations, the walkway re-opened in 2015. Watch the second video to see the new and improved version, but you still need a head for heights https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSj54G-806Q

14.01.2022 Tranquil waters and plenty of bird sightings in the Rockdale Wetlands on a beautiful sunny ramble along the F6 corridor. It would be a pity to destroy all this for a mere road.

14.01.2022 AGM next Saturday Dont forget to come to the AGM and picnic from midday Saturday 17 July at Memorial Park Meadowbank. Bring a picnic lunch, or sausages for a BBQ, a folding chair and maybe a good jacket if this chill continues. We are looking for a new newsletter secretary but come along even if you dont want to join the committee.

13.01.2022 Good news. The website is back up again.

13.01.2022 For those of you who have not yet started walking again on our new activity program, enjoy some virtual walking along the NSW Coast, accompanied by Beethoven. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2QLHtxGdbo&feature=youtu.be

13.01.2022 The official Bushies walking program has been cancelled and the government has advised we should try to remain at home at much as possible to avoid the possibility of infection and transmission. We ask Bushies members not to organise unofficial group walks. Note that if you are thinking of going for a local walk by yourself (social-distancing of course) in a nearby National Park, you should check with the NPWS website for park or facility closures. If you are in self-isolation you should not leave your home at all for 2 weeks. https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/npws-covid-19?

12.01.2022 Yum, yum, Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns are in the shops, but Easter is more than chocolate eggs or a few days off work. Hot Cross Buns should remind us that Easter is about the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. Easter eggs remind us of the new life that is brought to us through Jesus resurrection.

12.01.2022 A sparkling Sydney day on the foreshores of the harbour as we walked from Circular Quay, over the bridge to Luna Park and on to Balls Head, through the tunnels of the Coal Loader and on to a circuit of Berry Island. We continued uphill through lush foliage alongside the trickling waters of the Gore Cove Track, finishing at Wollstonecraft Station.

11.01.2022 Bushfires are an essential part of the life cycle of the Australian bush. Fires in the Royal National Park earlier in the year have caused mass flowering of grass trees and Gymea lilies. See this article in The Leader. https://www.theleader.com.au//botanical-wonders-on-show-i/

10.01.2022 Easter is almost here, but why does it change date every year? The events of Easter occurred at the time of the Jewish feast of Passover, which is calculated on a lunar calendar. Good Friday is 19 April 2019.

09.01.2022 We all know the Golden Rule in Luke 6: 31 "Do to others as you would have then to to you." As Christians we show respect for others, as the bible instructs us. The Bushwalkers Code also picks up on this theme as follows: WE RESPECT FELLOW BUSHWALKERS... We welcome people from all walks of life irrespective of gender, age, race, religion, culture, colour, sexuality; and behave in an harmonious manner. We appreciate difference and welcome learning from others, building relationships based on mutual respect. We do not tolerate bullying, harassment or discrimination in any form. We encourage, respect and support our leaders as competent and motivated leaders are essential to the success of our activities. We respect the right of our leaders to accept or reject walker applicants for specific activities based upon the assessed degree of difficulty and the assessed competence of individual walkers. We respect the right of bushwalkers to enjoy the peace and quiet of the bush without undue disturbance from technology. We help fellow bushwalkers in need, in situations such as: assisting with emergency communications, offering medical aid for which we are qualified, carrying the gear of an injured person, or sharing equipment See more

09.01.2022 Our website is temporarily down. We are looking into the problem and will be back online as soon as possible.

09.01.2022 The weather was perfect for our picnic on Shark Island. The island is tiny, but has wonderful views of Sydney Harbour.

07.01.2022 A beautiful day on the harbour, but LOTS of stairs on the Harbour Circle Walk.

07.01.2022 Many years ago I had the privilege of visiting Israel. I can still recall the excitement as the bus wound its way through the hills towards Jerusalem and the ancient walls came into view. The bible came to life as I wandered the maze of streets in the old city, exploring nooks and crannies, standing at the Wailing Wall, and visiting the beautiful garden on the site of Golgotha outside the city walls. Since then the archaeologists have been busy unearthing the past and there are many more wonderful sites to visit. Todays virtual walk takes us back to the time of the kings of Israel. There are some excellent videos on this page, but I particularly liked the first one -Journey Back in Time to the City of David. https://www.cityofdavid.org.il/en/tours/summer

05.01.2022 Leisurely Tuesday walk from Cremorne Point to Taronga Zoo. Eight of us plus lizard. 4.2 km (Wild Walks). Thanks for leading Mike.

04.01.2022 The wind blew hard at Cape Solander, Kurnell on Saturday, but the walk through the trees was sheltered and the day beautifully sunny. We didnt spot any whales, although the noticeboard said that 13 whales and 40 dolphins had passed that day.

04.01.2022 Ah wonderful summer!!! The long hot days, the sparkling waters and sand of the beach and...the deafening sound of cicadas in the bush. There are around 200 species in Australia. Did you know that only males sing in the chorus? Their distinctive sound is a mating call that can reach as much as 120 decibels. Some species sing at a frequency so high that the human ear cant hear them. Their piercing sound is made by contracting and relaxing the muscles of a pair of ribbed membranes at the base of their abdomen, called tymbals. For more interesting cicada facts see the Australian Museum website. https://australianmuseum.net.au/cicadas-superfamily-cicadoi

04.01.2022 Be Prepared Incidents like this show the need carry a Personal Locator Beacon even on a familiar bushwalking route. Make sure the first aid kit is well stocked. Carry emergency food/clothing suitable for an unexpected overnight in the bush. Always let a responsible person know when and where you are walking and what to do if you dont return by a specified time. Even more importantly NEVER WALK ALONE! https://www.abc.net.au//mt-nebo-bushwalker-crawls/11522794

02.01.2022 Today we are virtually walking in the UK. Firstly ascending Britains highest mountain in Scotland, Ben Nevis, then Scafell Pike in Englands Lake District. https://www.hfholidays.co.uk//a-guide-to-climbing-the-uk-b Lastly, we will pay a quick trip to Hassness on the shores of Buttermere in the Lake District. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOtDnxwUheg... Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. Keep safe

02.01.2022 Have a blessed Easter. Catch up with your local church services online and stay safe.

01.01.2022 Bushwalkers value the bush and its pristine nature. To ensure its preservation, bushwalkers follow a Code which sets out guidelines for how to behave while in the bush. Bushwalking NSW recently updated the Bushwalkers Code to reflect a modern approach to Minimal Impact Bushwalking. The Bushwalkers Code covers general care of the environment, dealing with rubbish, hygiene, fires, choice of campsites and many other issues. Here is the first section of the code of conduct, whic...h BNSW and the Bushies endorse. WE LEAVE NO TRACE We leave campsites better than we found them. We use existing fireplaces or carry cooking equipment when possible, and do not scar the landscape with fire rings. We comply with fuel-stove only requirements. We remove our rubbish from the bush and bury human waste away from watercourses. We do not pollute the ground and waterways with soaps and detergents. We do not remove plants or rocks from National Parks. We do not disturb native wildlife. We avoid easily damaged places such as peat bogs, cushion moss, swamps and fragile rock formations. We use existing tracks where possible and avoid creating multiple tracks which lead to erosion. for more info see http://www.bushwalkingnsw.org.au/bushwalkers-code/
