22.01.2022 *STAFF PROFILE* Meet Dave and his Doggo Mouse! Dr. Dave Garth - Equine Veterinarian I have a passion for equine imaging, lameness and poor performance related conditions. I love to see my clients horses competing at their best.... Fun Fact: A popular fact is that cows can walk upstairs but not down due to their knee conformation. This is entirely true as it depends how steep the stairs are that the cow has to walk down. Ricky Gervais has a good take on this in 'Animals'. Why Vet? I have spent my entire life with horses in many disciplines. I don't know when a dog or cat will bite me, but I can generally read horses. I also have a passion for science and medicine which means being a horse vet just makes sense. It frustrates me not to have the right answer so I will do whatever it takes to get the right answer. Background: I grew up in country Victoria with a range of animals and I always had a love for science. I have always loved being outdoors whether it be riding my bike, playing tennis or riding my horses. I got my first job as a stablehand at a local stable and this gave me my taste for the racing industry. Having a passion for science and sport meant I was always interested in any injuries that would pop up from time to time and would often be reading about how best to treat them. I was accepted into a degree in medical imaging which I enjoyed however I found I was missing the outdoors and horses. From here it seemed pretty straight forward that I should combine all of my passions and become an equine vet. Upon completing my degree I got a job in a racetrack practice in Melbourne before undertaking a stint in mixed practice. After this I moved back into racetrack practice and started expanding my knowledge into the performance horses. I started SEP in 2015 because I wanted to see my clients get the best care for the horses at the stable door with the most up to date equipment and treatments. Medical equipment has become so portable that you don't compromise quality by having it with you on the road. This eliminates waiting and allows immediate treatment. Since being in Sydney I have met my amazing wife and we have a quirky and lazy dog, Mouse.

22.01.2022 SEP is very excited to announce we now have our very own Gastroscope! Pictured is the gruesome but interesting reality of what Bots look like when they reach and attach to the stomach and another reason to why its important see whats going on inside your horses gut, particularly if they are showing signs of discomfort.

19.01.2022 EMBRYO TRANSFER Embryo Transfer is the process of breeding a mare to a selected stallion through artificial insemination, flushing an embryo out of the donor mare and transferring it to a surrogate (or recipient) mare. Generally, the optimal time to flush the donor mare for an embryo is ~7 days post-ovulation when the blastocyst has likely moved into the uterine horn and can be easily flushed out. Once flushed and found (if there is an Embryo), the embryo will be cleane...d and prepared, then transferred into the surrogate mare. The surrogate mare will be re-checked at 14 days for a hopeful pregnancy. See pictured for one of our successful 14-day pregnancies observed in a recipient mare, 7 days post-insemination of the embryo Embryo Transfer is a convenient and modern assisted reproduction technique that allows for the donor dam to produce more than one foal per year, or to continue competing while her foal grows in the recipient mare.

18.01.2022 What a smashing start to the week! SEP’s dedicated Reproduction team flushed a set of Twin Embryos from a very lucky client’s show jumping mare The twins were separated and transferred into two recipient mares, meaning both twins get the chance at survival - one of the many bonuses of Embryo Transfer. ... Twins in horses are most commonly not identical; they result from the ovulation of two dominant follicles. Getting the timing of the embryo flush right is important for retrieving both embryos at a size that’s appropriate for transfer.

17.01.2022 Its great to see our clients getting back out there!

17.01.2022 Dr. Dave performed a stitch up on this horse who had a laceration to its medial hindlimb. A tough and dangerous spot to perform a suture procedure. The suture pattern is known as cruciate sutures or cross-mattress sutures. Seen as forming a cross-like pattern. This particular suture pattern is able to withstand greater tensile strength compared to simple suture patterns, with a reduced risk of the sutures opening.

10.01.2022 *STAFF PROFILE* Get to know Dr. Beth! Name: Elisabeth Charles (Beth)... Specialty/Interest: I have a keen interest in performance and race horses, specifically lameness cases Interesting Fact: My twin boys were born in Manhattan with a view over Central Park Background: I was born and raised in Canberra. Got my first degree in Equine Science at Wagga in 2005 and my veterinary degree in Sydney in 2015. I also have a masters in animal nutrition. I started riding horses when I was 5 years old and I have always had a love and affinity for animals. What made you decide to become an equine vet?: I started working at the Canberra race track when I was 14 years old as a strapper and stable hand. This job sparked my love of racing and high level performance horses. After my first degree I started working in the department of agriculture in live animal importing. I worked with a lot of vets in my role and I figured out that I was more passionate about working in industry than government.

10.01.2022 Exciting things to come!

09.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW?... Horses can suffer from Endometriosis-like conditions. Equine Endometriosis (EE) is a multifactorial disease where factors such as age, multiple pregnancies, reproductive conformation, inflammation and endocrine issues can all play a role in the onset and severity. EE can be described as a progressive disease that involves endometrial gland changes, such as cysts, and epithelium atrophy or hypertrophy. It is more common in mares over the age of 12 and is a c...ommon cause of infertility and abortion in horses. There are a variety of diagnostic tools that can be used to determine the extent and severity of the disease, including; ultrasound, uterine biopsy and hysteroscopy (endoscopy of the uterus). Dr Noelle, with the help of Dr Beth and Nurse Shari performed a hysteroscopy on a patient with multiple large cysts and reported fertility issues. Hysteroscopy involves the insertion of a Video-endoscope into the uterus to visualise the cysts to aid removal. Removal can then be achieved using a range of different techniques. In this instance, and electrosurgical snare was placed around the cysts to aid removal. This is repeated per cyst and the uterus is lavaged to remove any fluid and debris left behind. This particular patient also received laser surgery to remove the smaller cysts that were unable to be removed using the snare. Dr Noelle Baxter has many years of experience dealing with reduced fertility in mares and offers reproduction soundness examinations on mares and stallions. These examinations may include ultrasound, bacteriology and cytology assessments, biopsy and hysteroscopy. A range of treatments are available as required. 08.01.2022 Ethmoid Haematomas What are they? An Ethmoid Haematoma can simply be explained as a mass that forms from the mucosal lining of the ethmoid conchae and sometimes the walls of the maxillary and frontal sinus.... Clinical Signs: Intermittent discharge of mucus/pus like materials, blood or serous fluids out of one or both nostrils. Noisy or laboured breathing Facial Swelling Bad breath Headshaking Coughing Diagnosis: Usually diagnosed via endoscopic examination and sometimes a histopathy is required to analyse the tissue. Treatment: Treatments may include; formalin injection into the haematoma, surgical resection, laser ablation, or cryosurgery. Approximately 20-50% of this type of haematomas reoccur. In this patients case, an injector needle was used in order to inject the haematoma with formalin. This requires multiple injections until the ethmoid haematoma has resolved. The first picture is a treated and healed ethmoid. The second picture shows the infected ethmoid and the third shows the injection into the Haematoma

07.01.2022 Some interesting shots of Exuberant Granulation Tissue (Proud Flesh) that Dr. Ellie debrided. Exuberant Granulation Tissue (EGT) is new connective tissue and blood vessels that form on a normal wound during healing. In cases of excessive granulation tissue formation, it often needs to be debrided by a veterinarian several times during healing to allow the wound to keep healing in a normal manner. Proud flesh tends to occur more frequently on lower-leg wounds that cant be sutured closed. This tissue has no nerves, but is very vascular, and bleeding is common when debriding the area. Trimming of proud flesh in these types of wounds has not proven to slow or prevent the healing process, as long as the wound is otherwise healthy

06.01.2022 *KISSING SPINES* This patient was reportedly underperforming, working with his head raised, showing genuine signs of discomfort and repeated lumbar muscle soreness. Radiographs were taken of the dorsal spinous processes around the thoracolumbar region and the horse was diagnosed with Kissing Spines. Kissing Spines is a condition in horses where two or more spinous processes are touching or rubbing together, causing pain (as shown in the picture). Kissing Spines typically affe...cts the thoracic and lumbar spines. Some signs may include back pain, objection to being saddled, progressive clumsiness and reduced athleticism. Common treatment includes anti-inflammatories and controlled exercise aimed at strengthening the stabilizer muscles of the back. This particular patient was successfully treated, returned to his normal performance level and even went on to win!

06.01.2022 Horses can (and will) find unique ways to injure themselves, but in this article well highlight four of the most common causes of sudden lameness.
