24.01.2022 Abdominal separations can be seen on men and women of any age. They are very common after giving birth BUT they are also really common in young fit men who do a lot of ab work in the gym and also get back pain. The key to avoiding one, or managing it so it's not an ongoing issue if you already have one, is to have an ultrasound with a physio who can assess the way you use your abs during exercise. They'll also be looking at how well you turn on your core and what your alignment is like. Make sure you come in and see one of our physios if you think you have an abdominal separation.
23.01.2022 Just checking out Rach's running technique and seeing if any changes need to be made to help her be more efficent, reduce the risk of injuries and improve her performance.
21.01.2022 Caroline, our clinical specialist hand physio has spent years training to be able to assist people with hand injuries and #lymphoedema issues. Commonly after cancer treatments there is some swelling and/or lymphoedema that needs some help from a quality therapist to prevent it from accumulating. Lymphoedema is common in the arms following #breastcancer surgery, the neck and face following neck and head cancer surgery (e.g. thyroid), and it is also common in the legs following gynae, #prostate, testical and gut surgeries. If you would like help with swelling or lymphoedema, or just to have an assessment so you know where you stand, book in to see Caroline by booking online or calling 9416 4410.
20.01.2022 2020 has been a year like no other and no doubt things are going to look a little different for a while. If someone you love is spending way more time than normal parked in a chair in front of a computer on Zoom meeting after Zoom meeting you might have heard they're starting to complain about back pain. For Christmas you could get them a massage or physio voucher (valid for 3 years from the date of purchase) OR you could give them a foam roller or spikes ball so they can str...etch and relieve muscle tightness and joint pain themselves at home. We currently have a range in stock. Come in and grab yours today before we run out. We've also got some handy videos online that will help your loved one learn how to use their new foam roller. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DLjkiQaGyU
18.01.2022 Did you know our massage therapist Vivien is also a physio student? This means he's already working alongside our physios to learn as much as he possibly can about the body so he's better able to help our patients. Book in for a massage by calling 9416 4410 or booking online via www.sydneyadvancedphysio.com.au

17.01.2022 Arthritis in the fingers can hugely impact your quality of life. It can make the things you love doing like writing, cooking, playing sport painful or near-impossible. Arthritis in the fingers can even make the things you need to do like cleaning and self-care difficult, but hand therapy can help. Caroline is a specialist hand physio and is available Wednesdays & Fridays to help those struggling to minimise the impact of arthritis. Book in by calling 9416 4410 or by booking online anytime via www.sydneyadvancedphysio.com.au
16.01.2022 Use it or lose it: The multifidus is a really important core muscle that you probably haven't heard about. It helps stabilise your vertebrae so that you don't overload the discs and joints. When you have an episode of bad back pain the multifidus at the level where there's an issue is switched off. It does not switch itself back on. ... Without the help of an expert physio to help you learn how to switch this muscle back on the multifidus will begin to waste away and atrophy. If this goes on for long enough you start to see fat infiltrate where there was once muscle. This has really significant implications for back pain. Here's the thing... the multifidus is NOT something we learn about at university. Physios need to have a lot of extra training to know how to specifically find and train the multifidus at the level of the deficit. It is so common that we see fat infiltrating the multifidus at multiple levels because the muscle hasn't received help that even though it's really visible on MRI's it's not commented on in reports. The images below show you how significant the changes can be. This muscle will not turn on without some help so make sure you don't lose yours. Book in to see one of our physios today by calling 9416 4410 or booking online any time via www.sydneyadvancedphysio.com.au More information: https://www.sydneyadvancedphysio.com.au/core-training-and-/
16.01.2022 Check this awesome image from @drbetseypt out. Women are often told they’re good to go after their 6 week check with their GP or Obgyn even when they’ve experienced tearing during delivery (not to mention a range of other symptoms women can be still actively dealing with at 6 weeks). If you just look at it as a muscle tear and ignore what’s going on elsewhere in a postnatal woman’s body you can see how the advice differs for a pelvic floor muscle tear vs a muscle tear with... a sports injury with this image. Returning to normal excessive at 6 weeks just because you’re medically well can create problems. This is one of the reasons why postnatal checks by qualified women’s health physios are so important. This is when we help you identify areas that might need a little bit of help - be it time, rehab, movement re-education etc - whatever your body needs to recover from the enormous changes your body goes through from pregnancy to delivery and beyond. #womenshealth #pelvicfloor #postnatal #postnatalcare #womenshealthphysios #pelvicfloorphysios #sydneyadvancedphysio #northshoremums

11.01.2022 At Sydney Advanced Physio our therapists are big advocates for the power of breath work and using it to help settle nerve issues, release the diaphragm to help with back pain and pelvic floor issues but breathwork is commonly the exercise people forget or decide is least important, and yet there's a huge relationship between your stress levels and sleep quality and the way you breathe. So, to help you see more value in your breathwork check this out... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WWDqKljmCU
10.01.2022 2020 has been quite a year and we thank you for your ongoing trust and support. We hope you all have a wonderful, safe and healthy Holiday period.
10.01.2022 When we assess an abdominal separation to see if it's improving we're looking to see if there's a change in thickness of the tissue that runs in between the 6-pack muscles (linea alba). We also look to feel if the depth of the separation changes. Getting a symmetrical core contraction is the best and most effective way to get the linea alba to firm up. The aim is to get it so it feels like a t-shirt pulled tight, not soft and squishy where we can push right through your tumm...y. If we can get the tissue to feel firm and taut then it helps support and protect the pelvis and lower back discs. When the abdominal separation isn't addressed we really commonly see the lower back discs break down quickly and back pain becoming a major issue. Addressing these issues also impact your continence menchanism and liklihood of developing prolapses. For help with your abdominal separation book in to see one of our awesome physio by calling 9416 4410 or booking online www.sydneyadvancedphysio.com.au #abdominalseparation #rectusdiastasis #diastasisrecti #sydneyadvancedphysio #womenshealth #pelvicfloor #womenshealth #physio

07.01.2022 There's an amazing book called Breath by James Nestor who is a journalist who spent years researching and exploring breathwork and some of it's many benefits. In the clinic we often use breathwork to release restrictions in the musculoskeletal system - particularly the rib cage. We also use various breathing exercises to improve diaphragmatic and pelvic floor function, reduce the pressure in your pelvic cavity (which impacts prolapses), calm a wound up nervous system, and dam...pen down peoples stress responses when they are overactive. There are a number of different techniques we use depending on what's going on and one is alternate nostril breathing when someone is in sympathetic overdrive. We find this helps calm the nervous system and stress response down and it can help people come out of a fight, flight, freeze response to the stressors and pain in their life. Here's a little excerpt from Nestor's book which is well worth checking out if you're wanting to understand the value of your prescribed breath work more, or even if you're looking at getting on a healthier routine for the new year. "Left-nostril breathing shifts blood flow to the opposite side of the prefrontal cortex, the right area that plays a role in creative thought, emotions, formation of mental abstractions, and negative emotions. Right nostril is a gas pedal. When you’re inhaling primarily through this channel, circulation speeds up, your body gets hotter, and cortisol levels, blood pressure, and heart rate all increase. This happens because breathing through the right side of the nose activates the sympathetic nervous system, the fight or flight mechanism that puts the body in a more elevated state of alertness and readiness. Breathing through the right nostril will also feed more blood to the opposite hemisphere of the brain, specifically to the prefrontal cortex, which has been associated with logical decisions, language, and computing. Inhaling through the left nostril has the opposite effect: it works as a kind of brake system to the right nostril’s accelerator. The left nostril is more deeply connected to the parasympathetic nervous system, the rest-and-relax side that lowers blood pressure, cools the body, and reduces anxiety. Left-nostril breathing shifts blood flow to the opposite side of the prefrontal cortex, to the area that influences creative thought and plays a role in the formation of mental abstractions and the production of negative emotions.
04.01.2022 Don’t forget that your local physio clinic has some great exercise equipment that will make a great Christmas present for someone you love. Often it’s also cheaper than larger stores like Rebel Sport AND you’ve got the bonus of supporting a local small business. If your lucky gift recipient isn’t sure how to use a roller then we’ve got some great videos like the one below that will help. Give the gift that’s going to help someone feel better this year.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DLjkiQaGyU
02.01.2022 Having your abdominal separation checked - and checked properly - is about so much more than how wide it is. You need to check: 1) how wide it is in the upper, middle and lower sections 2) how deep it is 3) whether you can pull the muscles apart wider when you do a curl up/mini sit up... 4) whether you can properly activate your transversus abdominus ("core") muscle contraction in the lower, middle and upper sections 5) if you can generate tension on the linea alba (the tissue that divides the 6 pack muscle) so that it feels like a t-shirt pulled tight on a mini sit up ... and this is just the beginning! Making sure that your abdominal separation recovers optimally after having a baby is SO important for the long term health of your spine and pelvis AND it impacts how your stomach looks and how your pelvic floor functions. Make sure you get a comprehensive assessment after giving birth. Book in to see one of our amazing therapists for a postnatal check. Please SHARE so your friends who are having babies understand how important a thorough abdominal assessment is after giving birth. #abdominalseparation #rectusdiastasis #postnatal #womenshealth #pelvicfloor #backpain #sportsphysio #womenshealthphysio #diastasis #abdominals #abs See more
