25.01.2022 Pectoral Sandpiper at right with Sharp-tailed Sandpiper facing it, in the middle, and a Red-necked Stint at left, facing away from us. Lake Wollumboola, NSW, AU.

25.01.2022 Hope that if this was intentional, the coward responsible steps forward.

23.01.2022 Black-faced Woodswallow, Bourke, NSW, AU.

23.01.2022 Hall's Babblers, Ford's Bridge, NSW, AU. Found these guys while driving slowly looking for them. I walked a little closer but we soon left them once I saw they had nests in this tree - so I couldn't manage a less obstructed view than this. (The grass thanked me for my visit with a million absolutely painful prickles that I still have to pick out of my shoes and socks!)

23.01.2022 Rose-crowned Fruit-doves turn up at a rate of perhaps 2 birds a year in the region between Sydney and the south coast. I have only seen them twice. Last year a juvenile bird was reported from Jerrara Dam, Shellharbour, and when I went there I found two. This year there have been reports of one adult and one juvnile at Shell Cove, Shellharbour. I found just the juvenile yesterday, although someone shared a photo of the adult and it is spectacular. I see a historical report (20+ years back?) of 5 in the same location - so perhaps if one spent a full day exploring all the fig trees, you might find there are more than 2 there this year, and who knows - perhaps there is one or two over at nearby Jerrara Dam too - maybe they are on the south coast in greater numbers than we realise - just a bit cryptic and in obscure locations?

23.01.2022 Mythical Unicorn Bird - the only one of its kind in NSW, I should think - Cotton Pygmy-goose, Ballina, NSW, AU.

23.01.2022 Cockatiel, Narrabri, NSW, AU.

23.01.2022 Little Crow, Bourke, NSW, AU.

22.01.2022 Musk Lorikeet, Peakhurst, NSW, AU.

22.01.2022 Willie Wagtail (juvenile)

22.01.2022 Thousands of birds falling out of the sky, dead and malnourished in the US. It's hard not to wonder whether we're starting to see the collapse of ecosystems. Frightening stuff, but change can only come if we face it - and something's got to change. https://www.theguardian.com//birds-falling-out-of-the-sky-

21.01.2022 Australian White Ibis - in somewhat of a natural habitat and pose - Kogarah Bay, NSW, AU.

20.01.2022 #eBirdLife - planning a 3,000km birding trip and eBird goes down for 2 days for maintenance, aaaaaargh!!!! Luckily I was a little prepared though - checked all my species maps earlier this week ;) and ... all going to plan ... the guys at eBird will be back online on the day we head off. Here comes the #SydneyBirding #2020LastHurrah!

20.01.2022 Pied Butcherbird sharpening its bill, Ford's Bridge, NSW, AU.

19.01.2022 Rainbow Lorikeets, Berrara, NSW, AU.

19.01.2022 Wow! This is actually super accurate for body shape and posture! Hooded Plover chick - critically endangered in NSW. Do your bit to protect them by not disturbing marked nesting areas on beaches and keeping dogs on leads when at the beach, except at designated leash-free beaches.

18.01.2022 I have yet to get the perfect combination of lighting and an eye-level bird, but I did manage to find a pair of Gang-gang Cockatoos feeding on my trip out to Colo, just outside Sydney's northwest, yesterday morning.

16.01.2022 Spring is here! Migratory shorebirds (also known as waders) are already returning to Sydney following their Northern Hemisphere breeding season. One incredibly rare vagrant that has turned up in New South Wales less than half a dozen times is the Little Stint. It is almost identical to the Red-necked Stints which must surely turn up here in the tens of thousands, if not even greater numbers. Long story short - thanks to assistance from people on the Australian Bird ID group ...I was directed to some photos by Dave Bakewell, who has put together this excellent and informative video on discerning Little Stints from Red-necked Stints. Get the binoculars out and let's see if we might find another one in NSW this year :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhRbmmrxEzs

15.01.2022 Growing rather fond of Latham's Snipe. Huge and excellent article here. https://www.swifft.net.au/cb/team_lathams_snipe_project.php

14.01.2022 Can you find the matching feathers on the other side of the bird?

13.01.2022 Cattle Egret, Narrabri, NSW, AU.

13.01.2022 Hey birding peeps - want an alert when something gets reported you haven't seen yet? Imagine this - Sydney has something like 20 or 30 local regions in eBird. I don't want 20 or 30 emails for alerts each day! And I certainly don't want alerts from the opposite side of the city every time a common bird gets reported that I haven't ticked there yet, but which I can see every day at home! Enter: Birdlines Area Alerts. ... You upload your list of "seen birds". This can be your state year list, your national life list - whatever you want. You can download it from eBird if you use that or you can just type one out manually. Then specify which regions you want to watch - for me, it's 20 or 30 small regions close to home. For you it might be all the places you're about to travel through on your next holiday. Oh yeah. Covid. Ok, on your next road trip! And presto - get sensible alerts :) Check out this post from Birdlines to see a couple screenshots, then head to birdlines.com.au to set yourself up.

12.01.2022 Birdlife International gets political, forcibly removing Taiwan from the international partnership of 100+ conservation organisations because the Taiwanese organisation's name and logo (that being a bird endemic to Taiwan) pose a "risk" to Birdlife International, on the basis that the organisation's name (in Chinese) and logo promote an "independence agenda" (according to Birdlife International), says the Chinese Wild Bird Federation (which is the Taiwanese organisation's name - it had already changed its English name three times to appease Birdlife International).

10.01.2022 Common Myna, Kogarah Bay, NSW, AU.

10.01.2022 Yesterday's trip out to Colo - just outside Sydney - turned up a number of beautiful birds. Perhaps the best sighting was a pair of Gang-gang Cockatoos feeding in a gum tree just above the road. The bird in the photo here is a male Satin Bowerbird - known for being jet-black when fully mature. Somehow the raised feathers and reflection of light brought out all this feather detail on this bird which, when it heard the click of my camera, turned around and looked just as black... as any other mature male. Altogether something like 14 Satin Bower birds on the day. The big winners at Colo were the pigeons though - seeing or hearing large numbers of Brown Cuckoo-Doves and Bar-shouldered Doves (about 10 each), 4 Wonga Pigeons, a Common Bronzewing and Peaceful Dove rounding out the mix. For smaller bush birds there were White-throated Gerygones and Scarlet Honeyeaters, Jacky Winters and - not so much a bush bird, but cool to see - about 10 pairs of Rainbow Bee-eaters, perched as couples along the power lines and trees then taking swoops over the road. For raptors there was an execllent view of a family of three Pacific Bazas slowly cruising down - just beside the road and slightly above the tree line. At the end there was a distant view of a single adult Peregrine Falcon, at its nest in a rocky cave, feeding a singly fluffy white chick. All in all almost 60 species seen in the morning. As a footnote, a quick detour to Bushell's Lagoon revealed the place absolutely full of water and, correspondingly, very few waterbirds. (Counter-intuitive, I know!) But two Swamp Harriers did fly low and close and an Australian Hobby landed right next to the car on arrival before flying off with a second Hobby that was out of sight nearby. A Black-shouldered Kite rounded out the raptors making the detour worth it on that front.
