19.01.2022 Intermediate Guitar At Sydney CBD Guitar Tuition Hi Everyone... I've been teaching Intermediate guitar classes at NSCC for ever & there's something I see in just about every class,most students have generally no idea of what Intermediate guitar level really is.If beginning guitarists are learning how to tune,play basic open chords,pick & strum changes, play simple songs, rhythms & riff's then Intermediate guitar should be another level. ... Intermediate guitarists are able to use their knowledge of the guitar fretboard with moveable chord forms, playing major & minor's & all the 7th's in each of the 5 basic movable C.A.G.E.D forms. By learning the fingerings for major chords & all your major scales in each of these 5 positions it becomes possible to play other chords & scales in any of the 5 position's. Playing songs which use a variety of chord types,voicing the chords in various areas of the neck & exploring the appropriate scales used to play over each chord give's you a working a knowledge of the fretboard At intermediate level you should be able to tune & keep a guitar in tune At intermediate level you really should know the names of all your notes & their enharmonic equivalents as well as their tab position's & numbers At Intermediate level you should be aware of what key your playing in, learning Key Signature is something you have to learn & drill into your head but again It's an important part of playing music on any instrument In general the more theory you carry around in your head away from the instrument the better Intermediate guitarists should have a reasonable command of rhythm & single line playing, everybody wants to be a great soloist but realise that a lot of your time playing guitar with other people is spent playing rhythm,you want to be killer at it,have a fierce groove,No body talks about how good a rhythm player Jimi Hendrix was,but he was a great R & B rhythm player If there's one constant with students coming to me for the first time,It's they have no sense of time,playing, counting & strumming rhythms is a learnable skill and an essential one,there's nothing worse than trying to play with people who have no sense of time For students who want to really develop their soloing skills,there are a number of ways to tackle it,learning solo's off your favourite CD's & vinyl, transcriptions, playing with people better than you,study & research of the internet can be very useful if you know where to look,reverse engineering what the greats did who came before & always being driven to be better than you were yesterday.
