25.01.2022 The Sydney Cricket Ground unveiled a new mascot today Now all it needs is a name The mascot is modelled on the clocktower of the SCG’s Members Pavilion. The mascot was created to help connect with all our fans but in particular for our younger fans and wider school communities.... The SCG mascot joins home team mascots Rocky Sydney Roosters, Cyggy Sydney Swans, Syd Sixer Sydney Sixers, Sky and Blue Sydney FC, and Tah Man Waratahs. SCG Chief Executive Officer Kerrie Mather said the mascot had been in development for almost a year. The SCG was established for the people of NSW over 160 years ago, so we are inviting the people of NSW to name our mascot, said Ms Mather. We hope our new mascot will create a connection to a wider audience and you’ll see it as our face on our digital and social media channels. It was a unanimous decision to name our new mascot ‘Clancy’, which was submitted by two fans The name Clancy was chosen for a number of reasons acclaimed Australian poet Banjo Paterson was a member of the SCG in the 1800s and of course, wrote the famous poem ‘Clancy of the Overflow’. The poem pays homage to Paterson’s deep affection for the people of the Australian Outback. The name of Cla...ncy connects and shows respect to our valued country members. There is also a chapter in Philip Derriman's Grassy Pitches and Glory Years: Grand Visions of the Sydney Cricket Ground dedicated to Banjo Paterson. In it is his famous quote which he mentioned on ABC Radio: Memories of cricketers, athletes, tennis players: they all centre round the cricket ground.
