25.01.2022 REPORT FROM THIS WEEK’S HASH TRASH ABOUT THE S2H4 CITY TO SURF RUN & BUCKET Might turn this week’s SMOKE SIGNALS into a write up of the excellent City to Surf bucket at Blues Point, which HELP ME (Rhonda) and I arrived at after a 1.5 hr walk from Circular Quay, through The Rocks, over the Bridge, through Milsons Point (past BARABBAS’s office where I used to get my tax returns done) and eventually to Blues Point, infront of the ugly 60s high rise tower which somehow got protec...Continue reading

05.01.2022 Yesterday evening saw me pitching up for my 5th consecutive Larrikin run, although, yes, in the event I both walked it and shortcutted it! It was familiar territory around all 4 sides of the sprawling construction site that is Central Station, with allegedly dips into both Chippendale and Haymarket, but I must confess to cutting those two suburbs out. There wasn’t much social distancing going on towards the start of the run (which was set by Frankly), with at least 1000 Indi...ans queuing all the way up Chalmers St, beside Prince Alfred Park (the site of the run start and the run beer bucket at the end), to board shuttle busses to the SCG (Sydney Cricket Ground) for the India / Australia T20 Cricket match that was taking place last night: a question that baffled the Larrikins was why they weren’t all boarding the wretched light rail, which stopped metres away and goes right past the SCG: was it not build for that very purpose?! Anyhow, be that as it may, the pack all seemed to return to the bucket at about the same time: the runners that’d done the full trail, and the SCBs like me (‘Short Cutting B*stards’!). The RA called me up for a ‘Down Down’ on behalf of Aroha, who was -until her arthritis kicked in 2 years ago- a pretty regular attendee at Larrikin runs, and I’ll be marking her passing further in this weekend’s edition of the ‘Hash Trash’. John Lennon’s passing 40 years ago to the day was also remembered, after which we all adjourned to the nearby Strawberry Hills pub: as close to Strawberry Fields as could be found. On On Chimney. 02.01.2022 With all these references to Sydney Harriette Strawbs, and her son Evan, in this week’s news letter, in the Post Script to the newsletter, and here on the Facebook page, The Scribe has had a song on the brain all afternoon. Back in the mists of time, in early 1973, when he was a spotty long haired 14 year old schoolboy in Blighty, The Strawbs were held off the Number One spot by The Sweet and their hit song ‘Blockbuster’. Spending 3 weeks at #2, during a time of great indust...rial unrest in the UK, and a time of truly shocking fashion, their classic song ‘Part of the Union’ had brilliant lyrics and a tremendously catchy chorus. 47 years later the Scribe thanks his lucky stars that he IS a Part of the Union, and that the Union got the uni to cover their casual teachers under Job Keeper. All together now.. Oh.. ya don’t get me, I’m Part of the Union.. Lyrics are as below: more appropriate for Britain under Ted Heath rather than Australia under Scomo, but then again... Now I'm a union man Amazed at what I am I say what I think, that the company stinks Yes I'm a union man When we meet in the local hall I'll be voting with them all With a hell of a shout, it's "Out brothers, out!" And the rise of the factory's fall Oh, you don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union Until the day I die, until the day I die As a union man I'm wise To the lies of the company spies And I don't get fooled by the factory rules 'Cause I always read between the lines And I always get my way If I strike for higher pay When I show my card to the Scotland Yard And this is what I say Oh, oh, you don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union Until the day I die, until the day I die Before the union did appear My life was half as clear Now I've got the power to the working hour And every other day of the year So though I'm a working man I can ruin the government's plan And though I'm not hard, the sight of my card Makes me some kind of superman Oh, oh, oh, you don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union Until the day I die, until the day I die You don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union Until the day I die, until the day I die Source: LyricFind https://youtu.be/KdOCWUgwiWs
