24.01.2022 Introducing: Sky the Border collie, 3 years old Skys humans have been experiencing some reactivity and overexcitement. The team at Tail Waggerz are working closely with sky & her family to overcome these behaviours and set her up with some training tools for success. Today we worked on: ... Positive reinforcement for calm behaviour Focussing attention on humans while walking Responding to commands (At home & in distracting environments) Tools for overcoming Leash reactivity Doggy socialisation skills We wrapped up todays session with a meet & greet with my dog Laika. Sky displayed very promising signs - showing off her doggy manners & interacting in some friendly off leash play. We are keen to see how miss Sky continues to progress with consistent training & her newly equipped skills.

21.01.2022 When teaching your dog to sit, avoid saying ‘sit sit sit’. It should be a clear command and only said once. If your dog does not sit, then you should gently lure or guide them into their sitting position. When they are sitting, say ‘YES’ and release them with your release cue word such as ‘free’.

20.01.2022 Everyone meet Frankie the Golden Retriever! Frankie has started one on one puppy preschool. Frankie has not been very happy going into his crate, does this sound like your dog? I opened both of the crate doors and lured Frankie into his crate, by the end he was laying down in his crate happy as Larry! Frankie also doesn’t like car rides, today we started trouble shooting this by desensitising him to being around the car with the car door open. Tail Waggerz will be going back in 2 weeks for another one on one puppy training session.

17.01.2022 Look at Mack’s handsome smile after his groom If you want to keep your best friends coat long and luscious they need to be brushed and combed every time you are washing them. This keeps away the little knots that turn into very big knots that your groomer won’t be able to brush out and will have to take your pup short to get under those naughty knots! I recommended booking in every 6-8 weeks with your groomer especially in the hotter months.

17.01.2022 Summer is here! Your best friend needs to be groomed every 6-8 weeks especially during summer. Some breeders say to groom your puppy at 6 months, however this is way to long for your puppy to go without a groom. They need to be desensitised to the noises and the process to feel at ease throughout. Regular grooming ensures that they are comfortable all through out the year.

17.01.2022 Gypsy soaking up the sun today after her second ever groom! We did an all over clip due to her fur starting to get a bit knotty, leaving her with a more manageable coat for her parents and her camping holiday in a couple of weeks. Goodbye puppy coat and hello teenager coat I love seeing how puppies coats change so much as they grow.

14.01.2022 Do you watch Netflix? Do you read? Do you exercise? Do you do these things daily? Dogs need to be stimulated just like us, they need to use their brains every day. Imagine if you weren’t allowed to do anything all day but sleep, would you even be tired? Boredom in dogs is why they start to demonstrate behaviours such as barking and chewing up furniture. By setting up an enrichment activity for your dog every day is equivalent to taking them for a walk if you don’t have time to get them out and about. Ideally your best friend would like you to take them out for exercise and set up an enrichment activity for them every day and trust me your dog will be thanking you.

14.01.2022 This is Laika doing a couple of our old tricks Legs & Middle. Middle is a useful command to teach your dog in order draw and maintain your dogs attention on you. Its simple to teach and can be a powerful tool in maintaining control off lead and in distracting environments. And if your pooch has motivation or food drive like our Laika it is also great for mental stimulation and a rewarding outlet for your dogs energy.

13.01.2022 SOUND ON How do you start your walk? Here is how I start my walk with Laika. I never get Laika excited before our walk. She doesn’t know the word walkies. One of the most common mistakes is getting your dog really excited before your walk and then expecting them to be right by your side and to listen to you. Set up your dog for success not frustration.

07.01.2022 Introducing Tail Waggerz newest training clients Molly & Wally. This little guy is in with us to work on his doggy social skills & build up his confidence. He had a run in with another dog as a pup which has left him with fear aggression & reactivity towards other dogs. We are slowly working to reintroduce him to his fury friends and teach him that the world isnt such a scary place. ... Behaviours we worked on in todays session: leash reactivity, holding queues, focus & eye contact on handler, sitting and observing other dogs with calm energy. 01.01.2022 I bet Winston feels a whole lot lighter without all of his matted fur! Winston is an Irish Setter, we dont see many dogs of that breed but they have a very interesting coat which I didnt want to completely shave off due to his matting. Im encouraging hes coat to strip out which will look natural and will be cooler for the hotter months. His owners have rebooked him for every 6 weeks for a coat strip and to keeps those naughty knots at bay. @petmaniavets @ Petmania Vet Surgery

01.01.2022 This week I have started training Laika how to hug, she is is such a fast learner this has only taken 5 minutes a day for 3 days to get to this stage. Im very lucky that I have an amazingly smart dog that is always eager to learn new tricks. Ill update you next week on how her progress is going. Perfect trick for taking a selfie with your best friend on four legs
