25.01.2022 I've fast-tracked a few skills after discovering the short courses offered by the Australian Film Television Radio School (AFTRS Short Courses). I had a chat on the podcast with Wendy Gray from the school about their courses and who they're designed for. We also chat about Wendy's career in the screen industry, including her extensive experience working in children's television. Podcast Guest Profile: Wendy Gray currently runs the short course and industry certificate progra...ms at the Australian Film Television Radio School (AFTRS). Over the last seven years she has been Head of the Open Program, Head of the TV Unit and began life at AFTRS as the Industry Program Manager. In her current role she liaises with Industry through the Industry Advisory Panels, runs industry-related events and oversees the development and delivery of industry short courses and industry certificates. Wendy started her career in the media at ABC TV, where she worked for twelve years in a wide variety of production roles, across all genres. Her final years at the ABC saw her devising, producing and directing a number of children’s television series including AFI-award winning series The Ferals and forty episodes of #PlaySchool. 24.01.2022 We’re talking all things money and accounting with Amanda Newton, Xero's Head of Community in Australia. She’s super friendly and has awesome tips for how to find the right people to help you handle your finances. I never, ever thought I’d podcast about accounting, but I think it might help a few artist/creative people out there too. I finally got tired of having nightmares about Excel () and had to set up new systems so I can focus on what I really love...creating. Tune... in to hear Amanda’s tips, how I found an awesome accountant aaaand how I unexpectedly scored my first investor! https://apple.co/2KgikDd See more

23.01.2022 Cutest co-host in the world. Keeps interrupting. Drops the mic literally! Her Dad got her a mini mic for laughs. I can’t even deal. #cameo #dropthemic #startthemyoung @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

21.01.2022 My next guest is Hawanatu Bangura, an award-winning filmmaker and director based in Sydney. We’re chatting about how she’s funded her eight film projects to date, whilst balancing a day job in social work. In the episode, she explains how filming a proof of concept for her web series @Afrosistahs helped get the project Generate funding from @screenaustralia. Then she also details how a collaboration with @busstopfilms led to the gorgeous film ‘I am Black and Beautiful’, whic...h recently won best short documentary at Montreal International Black Film Festival. I really love Hawanatu’s heart for stories that celebrate African people and culture on screen. She’s super sweet and humble and I hope you enjoy listening to her helpful insights! Podcast links in bio and highlights. #twowordswithtaku P.s. And a last-minute shoutout for African film lovers in Melbourne, @africaonscreen’s closing movie is on at @lidocinemas tonight. @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia https://podcasts.apple.com//funding-films-fi/id1213860034

21.01.2022 We keep hearing that we need more authentic voices telling their own stories. But what does that look like when you’re creating a TV show with different characters? How do you, as a writer, make their stories feel authentic, if you haven’t personally lived those experiences? On the podcast, I chat candidly with YouTuber and content creator @ajclementine_ about why she started sharing her stories online. We also discuss how young people in the LGBTQI+ community are representin...g themselves and supporting each other online. Link in bio and highlights. About AJ Clementine: She’s an Australian creator known for being an LGBTQI+ advocate for the community. She is also a vlogger who often shares life experiences about being transgender, while also covering lifestyle and fashion content. This year AJ was featured on the 'Barcroft TV' YouTube channel for the 'My Trans Life' series, and walked the Mardi Gras parade with @Instagram in Sydney. She‘s also been a Featured Creator at #VidConAU in 2017, 2018 and 2019. @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia https://podcasts.apple.com//authentic-voices/id1213860034

17.01.2022 Once upon a time, I quit my day job and drove 3000 kilometres across Australia to make TV. I had no idea how to, just a ridiculous fire in my heart. At the start of 2017, I put @netflix on my dream board because that seemed like the most IMPOSSIBLE, WTF goal for me, a rookie producer and writer, to aspire to. Then six months later, I went to a screenwriters’ pitch event in Sydney and was pretty nervous. During a break, I said hi to a guy who was standing quietly by himself... and we started talking. Turns out he was the script producer on @beatbugs and @motownmagictv and I almost died! I asked him to read my stories and simply give me feedback...and now, two years later...the real story is just beginning! It’s too much to type up for now, so I’ve decided to podcast about this journey to making my first kids’ TV show. Honestly, it’s exciting and terrifying and exciting and terrifying! #allthefeels In the first episode, John and I are talking about pitch bibles, series/writers’ bibles. It was all well and good that I had a great idea for a TV show, but how was I going to get broadcasters and production companies to care about it? 16.01.2022 Ohhhhhhh the scandal at our last show! So good! :)

15.01.2022 All set for the last show of the year! Happy happy joy #joy!

14.01.2022 This is an old pic from our second writers’ workshop in 2018. I’m with the fabulous screenwriter and podcaster Evrim, and our script producer John Armstrong. I invited Evrim onto the podcast to chat about being an emerging writer and how joining the @australianwritersguild is helping her writing career. Evrim and I get suuuuper nerdy about podcasts too, always swapping links, ideas and shows we like. In the episode we also talk about her new audio fiction show Script Roulet...te Podcast where emerging writers are given a prompt, write a script and then voice actors bring it to life in the studio. So good, worth a listen! #emergingwriters #twowordswithtaku @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia https://podcasts.apple.com//writers-guild-wi/id1213860034 See more

10.01.2022 Happiness is when a phenomenal woman/writer/podcaster you admire admires your baby. Tressie McMillan Cottom gave me the best hug and it meant so much. I’d almost cancelled coming out to see her because I wasn’t sure how Maya would be during the day. But I decided to be brave and venture out. Bub was fine! Thank you to every single person at #broadside2019 who showed us kindness, opening doors, helping with the pram, and just giving glorious smiles and cuddles. What a beautiful village! P.s. Podcast plug: Tressie co-hosts ‘Hear to Slay’ with @roxanegay74. It’s gooooood!

10.01.2022 Next up on the podcast is the super-talented screenwriter Wendy Hanna. We’re discussing writers’ rooms and what makes them fun, silly and serious! We also chat about things new screenwriters can do to bump up their skills e.g. entering writing competitions like @nycmidnight and reading scripts from shows you like and don’t like. We also chat about how to grow your own community of fellow writers. I first met Wendy at an Animation Writing Workshop run by Australian Writers' G...uild. She ran a mock writers’ room and taught our group so much, I just had to get her on the show. Wendy’s worked across different genres from drama to kids’ to factual and her credits including writing on the iconic Aussie serial @neighbours and several kids’ shows like @sydneysailboat, @giggleandhoot_ and Dumbotz. P.s. Just announced today, KARA, INFECTED, a series that Wendy co-created with Taylor Litton-Strain, has received development funding from Screen Australia. I can’t wait to see it! Tune in to #twowordswithtaku to hear more of Wendy’s wisdom about writing. #alliteration #seewhatididthere @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia https://podcasts.apple.com//writers-rooms-sc/id1213860034

08.01.2022 "without the proper documentation proving the ownership of the work, there’s no protection from legal action." The world of television is full of great ideas and magic...and contracts and legal agreements that underpin how all that magic comes together. In her episode on #twowordswithtaku, lawyer Dee Mbugua explains what 'chain of title' means and why it's so important in the media industry. She also gives useful tips for seeking legal advice, especially when it comes to th...e fineprint. If in doubt, don't make a wild guess and definitely don't sign anything! Podcast Guest Profile: Dee Mbugua is the Deputy Director, Industrial, Advice and Advocacy at Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance. She’s an experienced lawyer and writer with a demonstrated history of working in the alternative dispute resolution industry.
