22.01.2022 On the ‘C’ trail, some of you may be thinking of taking a Camel ride. So I would like to give you some facts about camels before you decide to hop on one. Most camels are tall and long, they can grow up to 1.8 meters high and 3 m long. They can weigh up to 1,000 kg when they are fully-grown. I have weighed them. Camels can run at 40 to 67 Kph. So if you are afraid of heights and of unbalanced speed, think twice.... They are hard to get on and stay on, especially without a saddle, and even harder to get off! Moreover, they have long legs so you will be sitting a lot higher than them. Watch out for your head, as they will run you into trees and branches careless of what is happening to you on top. Be prepared, if you are planning a long trip, take your own water as camels are not easy to stop. Camels can drink over 100 litres of water in 10-15 minutes. The camel's hump is like a storage container. When camels use their stored fat, their hump will diminish. When they eat and drink again the hump will refill with fat. Make sure you wear gear to cover your nose and eyes and protect yourselves from blowing sand in a storm, and take clothing to protect you from the heat and cold. Camels have a third, clear eyelid, two rows of long eyelashes, and can shut their nostrils during sand storms. They are comfortable in hot and cold climates. No need to worry about your weight as camels can carry about 270 kilograms on their backs. This ability has earned these beasts of burden a nickname, "ships of the desert." Bring your own food as camels have big thick lips, which allow them to eat things that most other animals couldn't, such as thorny plants. They don’t eat meat. They can be cute and handsome when decorated. Yet, if you can’t stand bad breath, make sure you don’t face them. They are very social and like to greet each other by blowing in each other's faces. Yet when they feel threatened they will spit. Female camels usually only have one baby, but sometimes camels have twins. Camels become fully mature when they are 7 years old. Camels live around 17 years. Wild camels are one of the most endangered large mammals; there are fewer than 1,000 wild camels alive. #AlphabetTrail

I will use the analogies of the alligator and the chameleon to invite you to think about the alphabet. Who invented the alphabet? It certainly was not invented for the English language. 11.01.2022 C is for Coconut - Anecdote for everyone on the #AlphabetTrail The coconut palm is known as the tree of life because it is one of the most useful trees in the world. It grows in hot places and can grow up to 95 feet tall. It takes about 6-10 years to give fruit, and can give 30 to 75 fruit a year.... The young green coconuts have sweet drinking water inside and a soft white coconut meat to eat. Coconuts have a skull or head. The shell is covered with a dry fibre, the husk or the coir. The mature older coconuts have the meat or kernel inside. More than 100 products can be made from the coconut. From coconut water they make a variety of drinks. The coconut flesh is used to produce milk, yoghurt, cheese, ice cream, butter, flour, oil, milk powder. From the coconut husks they make planting materials. From coconut nectar they make vinegar, cider, sugar, spread, honey, wine... From coconut coir (fibres) they make ropes, mats, brushes, mattresses. From coconut trunk they make furniture, drums, canoes, fuel... From coconut leaves they make brooms, skewers, baskets, roof thatching... From coconut roots they make dye, mouthwash Coconut is also used for making beauty products, soap, shampoo, skin creams, hair and massage oil ... Indonesia and the Philippines account for most of the world’s coconut production. Have you got any coconut in your house? Coir door mat, hanging basket, armchair - I have a coconut bag/purse! - a veg/spice rack, brush, bowls .. - In my pantry I have many coconut products (see photo) Looking forward to your company on the ‘C’ trail.

07.01.2022 Are you ready to go on the #AlphabetTrail? Why am I taking you on this trail? To activate your Amygdala which is the blue section in this picture. This little almond-shaped part of your brain is responsible for survival instincts, memory, feelings of alertness and other emotions. I have chosen the Amygdala, because my first job as a Speech Pathologist was in ‘Surgical Neurology’ at the Western General hospital in Edinburg, Scotland, and all I know and do today is influenced b...y that experience. On this trail, together we will be able to share ideas and memories of people and places we’ve been, whilst eating interesting and different foods. Stay tuned for my shopping list, menu, and food pics for our first destination; A.

06.01.2022 Getting ready for the next journey on the #AlphabetTrail I would like to invite you to think of the next letters, ie. D E F G H. These will be merging to form one trail! Why? ‘D’ bears very little to its name: dates, durian, dragon fruit, dill.... ... So does ‘E’: eggplant, endives... So does ‘F’, fig, feijoa, fennel, fava beans, fenugreek ... So does ‘G’, grapes, gourd, guava, grapefruit, garlic... So does ‘H’, honey dew melon, haricot beans, hazelnut, hot, habanero chilly... We can barely make a meal out of these. So a new direction is called for. We will merge trails and guess where we are going to go? ‘D’ will take us on a trail to Denmark, to taste their Danish cheeses and pastry. ‘E’ will take us on a trail to England to taste their English breakfast. ‘F’ will take us on a trail to France to taste their local French onion soup. ‘G’ will take us to Greece and to Germany to taste their popular food. ‘H’ will take us to Honduras and to Hungary, to taste their famous Goulash. I invite all of you to share your favourites from the above countries on the trails.
