25.01.2022 I feel so proud to be celebrating 16 years as a Speech Pathologist and I can honestly say I still love it and all the children and families that Ive had the pleasure of working with along the way From starting out as a full time Department employee to now still working for the department and also running Talk the Walk there has been so much growth & busy times

24.01.2022 When youre a Speech Pathologist and your own child needs therapy Lola is 4 this month and has common speech errors including fronting on her /k/ & /g/, Gliding on her /l/ & /r/ and Reduction of her /sh/. Home practice can be challenging, we use a combination of turn taking games when doing sound practice to increase the motivation to towards practice and are very lucky that day care also support her using her picture cards in a group game which provides her with peer modelling and support. Cued Articulation is also used in practice and modelling her errors in conversation. Heres a snippet of her warm up during a home practice.... its so heartwarming to see how proud and aware she is of her progress

24.01.2022 Community Helper day @ School Great to see a Speech Therapist being represented

24.01.2022 This morning I made some videos for the Preps at Bannockburn College to support their remote learning of Letter/Sound Relationships and to practice their Cued Articulation. Thought Id post on here for other families to access ..... Happy Singing

24.01.2022 What does a speech pathologist know about reading? Quite a lot in fact! An extensive body of research on reading instruction shows that there are five essenti...al skills for reading. Did you know that all five of these skills can be assessed and treated by a speech pathologist? 1. Phonemic Awareness - The ability to identify and manipulate the distinct individual sounds in spoken words. For example, understanding that the word "shark" contains 3 sounds "sh+ar+k". 2. Phonics - The ability to decode words using knowledge of letter-sound relationships. For example, knowing that the letter c makes a hard "k" sound when followed by an "a", "o", "u" or another consonant, but makes a soft "s" sound when followed by an "e" or an "i". 3. Fluency - Reading with speed and accuracy. 4. Vocabulary - Knowing the meaning of a wide variety of words and the structure of written language. 5. Comprehension - Understanding the meaning and intent of the text. If your child is experiencing reading difficulties contact a speech pathologist for advice.

14.01.2022 A great article with practical ideas

14.01.2022 Yesterday I had to hold back tears in a session. It was our first face to face after 3 months of Telehealth. Partway through a task the 4 year old stopped and said Mel, I am so glad you are at my house today. I have really missed you. It really makes you stop and take a breath that for these little ones you become a constant, a part of their routine and their everyday life and while people may only see the work you do with them on the surface as a SP we have the ability to impact their lives so early on in such positive ways that will support them to navigate through their early education, schooling and beyond and this is why I love what I do and I feel blessed to have so many wonderful clients and client families I work with

14.01.2022 When you work all day & come home to work some more one of my cutest & cuddliest clients but my most stubborn at times too x

13.01.2022 Something very close to my , always know as a parent you are not alone and the love you give your child means the world to them even if at times you dont feel it or they cant show it the way you expect A.D.H.D Take my hand and come with me, I want to teach you about ADHD.... I need you to know, I want to explain, I have a very different brain. Sights, sounds, and thoughts collide. What to do first? I cant decide. Please understand Im not to blame, I just cant process things the same. Take my hand and walk with me, Let me show you about ADHD. I try to behave, I want to be good, But I sometimes forget to do as I should. Walk with me and wear my shoes, Youll see its not the way Id choose. I do know what Im supposed to do, But my brain is slow getting the message through. Take my hand and talk with me, I want to tell you about ADHD. I rarely think before I talk, I often run when I should walk. Its hard to get my school work done, My thoughts are outside having fun. I never know just where to start, I think with my feelings and see with my heart. Take my hand and stand by me, I need you to know about ADHD. Its hard to explain but I want you to know, I cant help letting my feelings show. Sometimes Im angry, jealous, or sad. I feel overwhelmed, frustrated, and mad. I cant concentrate and I lose all my stuff. I try really hard but its never enough. Take my hand and learn with me, We need to know more about ADHD. I worry a lot about getting things wrong, Everything I do takes twice as long. Everyday is exhausting for me... Looking through the fog of ADHD. Im often so misunderstood, I would change in a heartbeat if I could. Take my hand and listen to me, I want to share a secret about ADHD. I want you to know there is more to me. Im not defined by it, you see. Im sensitive, kind and lots of fun. Im blamed for things I havent done. Im the loyalist friend youll ever know, I just need a chance to let it show. Take my hand and look at me, Just forget about the ADHD. I have real feelings just like you. The love in my heart is just as true. I may have a brain that can never rest, But please understand Im trying my best. I want you to know, I need you to see, Im more than the label, I am still me!!!! ~Author Unknown Copy and paste this as your status if u know someone with A.D.H.D or know the struggle yourself. When people tell you its an excuse just read them this..

11.01.2022 I always try and make sessions fun and incorporate games that work on turn taking and fine motor skills. The kids love choosing a game with their tasks and this weeks favourite pick has even been on the scary side even for me along with lots of laughs

09.01.2022 The research shows what Speech Therapists have been promoting for a long time... decodable books & a phonics approach is more effective in literacy development than a whole language approach & I love teaching this way to my students.... its fun, engaging & children are consolidating their skills well

06.01.2022 April is Autism Acceptance Month. Many people have an understanding of Autism that is based on little more than stringing together a few popular stereotypes. Th...is video aims to help fill the gaps by cutting through the medical jargon and sharing instead the human side of Autism. In the past few decades the world has come a long way in its understanding of Autism. This is not least due to the contributions of autistic adults shedding insight into their own condition. Autism Explained empowers parents to understand their autistic children and create healthy supportive environments. By combining the experience of an adult on the Spectrum with a single mum who lives this stuff every day, we set you on the path to regain family harmony and actually enjoy time with your kids!
