19.01.2022 Embryo Transfer is suitable for all sport and performance horses. In particular, it is a beneficial assisted reproductive exercise for: Mares in competition can donate embryos while in work Valuable mares may have more than one foal per year Older mares can donate embryos to young recipients Embryos can be transferred from 2 and 3 year olds... Mares with a damaged cervix as a result of a difficult foaling have an increased chance of producing offspring with embryo transfer as opposed to attempting to carry their own foal. Sub fertile mares can have their embryos transferred to young, reproductively healthy mares See more

18.01.2022 Good Health is vital when preparing your dry mare for the season. Before starting on any breeding journey, it is important to make sure your mare’s general health is as good as it can be. Arrange for all routine care to be done before starting the breeding process. This would include yearly vaccinations, a dental check-up and deworming. Remember, what’s good for the mare is good for the foal!

18.01.2022 Signs and Symptoms of a Snake Bite Wobbly gait and weakness Laboured breathing Colic signs sweating/pawing/rolling... Swollen muzzle Dilated pupils Bleeding from mouth or nose These symptoms can also be indicators of other diseases, including Hendra virus infection. If your horse is showing any of the above symptoms, or you suspect they have been bitten, it is important to keep the horse as calm as possible and avoid exposing yourself or anyone else to any secretions or discharges from the horse’s nose, mouth or eyes. Call your veterinarian immediately. It is vital your horse is treated as soon as possible to achieve the best possible outcome.

17.01.2022 Chilled semen involves collection, microscopic examination of sperm motility and morphology, dilution with the appropriate extender, cooling, and transport to the required destination. This method can be used from any fertile stallion from any location that can ensure reliable transportation of the semen to the mare. Let us take care of all of this for you. Call our clinic to arrange getting a local stallion collected semen transported for your mare.

16.01.2022 What we do at a neonatal foal check to ensure you have a healthy foal? Physical Exam Check the Umbilicus Perform A IgG Test ... Check Meconium has passed within 24 hours Check for normal urination Check Ribs & Overall Conformation Early intervention is vital with a newborn foal, as undetected issues can cause them to deteriorate quickly. If in doubt, always call your veterinarian.

16.01.2022 Why do foals need to have colostrum? When foals are born they are extremely susceptible to infections caused by bacteria or viruses found in the environment, due to Immunoglobulins not being transferred during pregnancy. The immunity from the mother lasts 6 - 12 weeks at which stage the foals own immune system should be functioning and producing its own protection. Without ingestion of sufficient quantity or quality of colostrum the foal is at risk of developing life-threatening conditions.

10.01.2022 Have you ever wondered what is involved in the process of freezing semen? Semen is collected, analysed, and appropriately extended, then frozen in straws under controlled decreasing temperature increments in liquid nitrogen. This technique allows access to semen from horses which are located overseas, currently competing, injured or even deceased. . #creatingchampions #frozensemen #tamworthequineveterinarycentre #sconeequinegroup #veterinaryexcellence

07.01.2022 What is colostrum? Colostrum is the thick, sticky, yellow-white fluid produced by the mare’s udder. It is highly nutritious, having higher levels of protein, fat, vitamins, sugars & minerals than regular milk. The most important contents of the colostrum are the maternal immunoglobulins. Immunoglobulins are building blocks of proteins used by the body’s immune system to fight off infections. The mare selectively concentrates these building blocks of immunoglobulins from her blood into her milk during the last few weeks of pregnancy.

05.01.2022 FEEL GOOD FRIDAY! Do you remember a stallion called Smooth Like Cactus? A stallion in his prime, excelling in many disciplines - cow horse, campdrafts and ...stockmans challenges to name a few! He stood his first breeding season in 2018 as a 5 yr old at Tamworth Equine Veterinary Centre but before his first crop of foals hit the ground disaster struck. A catastrophic paddock injury resulted in the heartbreaking decision by owner Becky Lock of Atomic Performance Horses to euthanise Cactus. Whilst the decision was not made easily, there was a silver lining. No frozen semen had ever been stored from this young stallion. However, Dr Jennifer Clulow of Scone Equine Hospital was able to extract epididymal sperm from Cactus and freeze several doses using careful technique and experience she gained whilst completing her PhD in equine stallion semen cryopreservation. The resulting product was used to breed Becky’s own mare Atomic Seductress. Under the careful expertise of Dr Gill Rickard of South Coast Equine Veterinary Practice, an embryo was retrieved from Atomic Seductress and placed into a recipient mare resulting in this beautiful filly, born last week! If you would like to find out more about this specialist service please contact Scone Equine Hospital on 6545 1333 or email [email protected] Click the link to read more about the process of freezing epididymal spermatozoa - http://www.sconeequinehospital.com.au//freezing-epididymal
